The Penelope Surgical Instrument Server makes its debut
Remember that "robotic scrub nurse" we
mentioned back back in January? Yeah, well the voice-controlled Penelope Surgical Instrument Server assisted in its
first surgery the other day, helping a surgeon at New York-Presbyterian Hospital here in NYC successfully remove a
benign tumor from a woman's arm (they don't say whether she consented to have Penelope be part of the show or not). The
voice-controlled bot can automatically grab surgical instruments when called for ("scalpel please!") and then pick it
up and put it back when it's no longer in use, while at the same time keeping track of everything that's used in order
to make sure that nothing is, uh, accidentally left behind (you really don't want to wake up with some forceps inside
of you).
[Thanks, icebin]

OPERATE!!!, OPERATE!!!
Two questions:
a) Does the surgeon need to be polite? (say please)
b) How does it pick instruments back? A nurse can grab it without the surgeon taking hands off the patient but what about Penelope?
Sounds like more nurses will be out of work...

Do you *really* trust a robot to handle scalpels? This is like inviting them in to take over our society, so that we will all be mindless batteries subservient to the giant toaster!
I would hate to be the one they're operating on when it bluescreens.
I love the fact that both of the people in the picture look concerned/afraid of what it's going to do next. Of course maybe the nurse is just worried about how long it will be before she's replaced?!?
Nurses are actually in short supply, which may be the point of this bot. Either way, what happens when something goes wrong?
"Um, RoboNurse, can you help me clamp this burst artery?"
haha i agree with #5. i remember seeing its prototype running on a 1GHz ibook and it was doing great. as long as the hospitals run it on a mac (nothing that overheats like some iMac G5s lol) i guess it *shouldn't* bluescreen..
I am a surgeon. This is a gimik. I saw it on the news. 1)Much slower then a nurse 2)The surgeon should not have to take his eyes of the patient to recieve intstruments 3)Only a small number of insturments are recognized, which must be placed on a stand for the robot. If there are only a small number of instruments placed on a stand then I don't even need the nurse to hand me the instrumints.

Won't be nurses that are displaced. Nurses, in general don't scrub anymore. The person who hands the instruments to the surgeon is a surgical technologist and I can tell you first hand (well, second hand really, my wife is the CST) that they do a whole lot more than just hand instruments and count sponges. Anyone who wants to replace CST's with this is just asking for trouble. What happens when the surgeon has a difficult accent? Or gets stressed? What happens when the surgeon needs retraction? Suction? Cautery? Is this thing going to have the smarts to understand? Doubt it.
