Fingernails: next year's thumb drive

femtosecond laser fingernail data

We'll let it slide (this time) if you're not down with femtosecond lasers, but in case you were trying to figure out something to do with that femtosecond pulse emitter in your garage you spent a few grand making, Japanese researchers at Tokushima University have the ultimate application: transcode data onto your nails. That's right, you can fit to 5Mb (about 640KB) on your fingernail which can be read via a fluorescence microscope, and that'll last you up to 6 months—unless you're a chronic chewer, or haven't been pushing back those cuticles and applying strengthener and finish, you slob.
