Is the HTC Apache a CDMA Wizard?
They can't guarantee that this is 100% legit, but PhoneArena has some pics and specs of what it claims is a CDMA/EV-DO version of the HTC Wizard. Sprint and Verizon customers who were feeling pangs of jealousy earlier this week over the Wizard better hope this is for real, esp. since the specs are fairly solid: it's 4.5 x 2.5 x 1-inches in size, runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 and has EV-DO (!), 128MB of ROM, 64MB of RAM, a QWERTY keyboard that slides out horizontally, 802.11b, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel digital camera, and a miniSD card slot. The one real weak point is its display: these days, QVGA just isn't cutting it on a Pocket PC Phone, it's gotta be VGA to make us properly weak in the knees. Anyway, supposedly a CDMA carrier in New Zealand will be getting this in September or October, no word/clue whether or when Sprint or Verizon might follow suit.

I agree - where are the VGA displays. I think I'll hold off on replacing my pda phone until I can get 640x480 and WM5. I know the displays exist so I'm not sure why anyone is putting them in their phones.
By the time Verizon is through with it... it will be both neutered to not much more than any other phone.
Design is very good.
What would be awesome is if somehow that keyboard rotated around to be on the bottom of the screen.
im confused... this is the third slide-out-keyboard phone posted on engadget labeled as the HTC xxxx but every single phone has been different...
look at this phone along side this one:

would the real htc wizard please stand up?
Sprint PPC-6700?
According to Sprint, they are releasing their new EV-DO PPC-6700 in August/Sept.
It has been heavily speculated that this PPC-6700 IS the HTC Apache/Wizard. (It's a hot topic at pcsintel.com and other Sprint sites)
So in fact, we may be getting this alot earlier than later. Let's hope.
that antenna is huge! i'll stick to my treo.
Sheesh. If this is coming to Sprint, we're not going to find out until it actually releases...
Sprint has tightened their lips worse than a mideval lady-in-waiting's rusted chastity belt...
OMG!
I said i would leave Verizon for this phone but hold up, the white and black with all black keyboard?!?!
That's hot.
If Verizon gets this I'm right back in bed with them i hate the antenna jumping outta there but i'll live with it for that color scheme.

Items really needed for me to upgrade my to a new PDA Phone
VGA screen
WM5
Bluetooth 2.0
A standard USB connector would be sweet!
A much smaller phone than my PPC6600 would be nine (thickness as well as height and width) - No EXTERNAL Antenna!
The processor is on this model is fine - but not much other than WM5 that makes this any more interesting to me than my PPC6600
DOES ANYONE KNOW THE BATTERY LIFE ON THIS HTC APPACHE
FYI, I saw and touched this device at the Microsoft Professional Developer's conference last week in Los Angeles. This device is real and will ship, but no one knows exactly when. It's very cool and fits nicely in the hands.
Damn it. I'm looking for a GSM version of this phone with built-in GPS. How long more are we all going to have for such a device? I wish the name HTC Apache would be carried over to the GSM version too.
It's funny how this phone doesn't have GPS but has a camera and the HTC Galaxy has GPS but no camera. Grrr..
This looks like the ultimate road warior surfvival kit.
you can make most of the time all you need.
only drawback is 802.11b/g not included in the package and thus cant whitstand 2 to 4 years from now the changes.
when celular networks die. my first book.
not out yet but in the making.
I got my PPC-6700 from Sprint yesterday - Not much time to test it out - so far - 2+hrs on mp3s and has 90% battery life left - working it hard it doesn't get warn to hold - keyboard lights up at night which is nice - easy navigation - so far - looks like a real piece of art
I just purchased the PPC 6700 (HTC Apache) through sprint, amazing; I can manage my large Ebay business soley through this phone because of the seamless and fast internet connection, my laptop is getting lonely! it will pick up and connect to any nearby unlocked wireless router in about five seconds, or switch over to evdo when in the car, it has sprint tv with 20 channels, and the display switches over to portrait mode when you slide out the keyboard (Bang & Olufsen style), bluetooth allows me to connect to a wireless plantronics headset, this thing is slick! 1.3 mp camera has a video mode and even a super-bright led backlight for filming in low light conditions, as well as a macro setting for close-ups. This is one smart phone that truly does it all flawlessly, makes my Treo 650 look like an old soup can with a string attached!
Tom,
I have a 650 also and I am looking to upgrade. This could be the smartphone to upgrade to. I have a question. How is the phone quality compared to the Treo 650? Also, how is the one hand operation compared to the 650 (like using it in your car)? Thanks for your response.
Cigaso.
