Doom runs well on the Nokia 770
If someone told us that Doom would run at full resolution—and freaking fast—on the
Nokia 770 that we've seen, played
with, and sincerely cast doubt upon, we probably wouldn't have believed them. Had we not watched the video. But damn,
does that Linux Doom port fly on that thing.
Just thought you might like to know—yes, there's a little hope left yet.
[Thanks, Reggie]

Any particular reason why you chose that sentence structure over "Doom runs well on the Nokia 770"?
Peter @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
just to annoy you steve :D

Don't worry, your hair dryer will be able to run Doom 3 in 16 months or so :P

I hate people who correct Grammer. They think they are so cool. I don't see u running a very well known website.
Steve @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
I hate it when people correct grammar or spelling too. But, I thought he had some kind of personal vendetta against Nokia and was trying to allude to the fact that the Nokia 770 is doomed or something. Thats why I asked. Otherwise, if I was trying to be a tool I would have said the correct sentence structure is actually.
Dylan @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
I expect Reggie knew full well that the initial "Doom on the nokia 770" would confuse people, but its also an attention grabber.
My guess is, damded quick thinking advertisement. Reggie here would make a damded fine sensationalist journalist, which is a good thing in some places :)

What does this Nokia 77 look like, is it a PDA? The UI is nice. It's cool seeing Doom getting port over to multiple handhelds. I am enjoying Doom port on my T3 as well.
Michael Levy @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
If people are most likely to read at least the first five words, which is better: "Doom on the Nokia 770" or "Doom runs well on the"?
IRRegardless of you feel about grammar-correctors, I'd like to put in a good word for the apostrophe police. Because some thing's are inexcusable.

I have never really understood the DOOM phenomenon. It's not that fun to me. Why does everyone always try to port it to...everything? Just for the novelty?
num10ck @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Doom was a breakthrough in graphics AND optimization. It is a very impressive demo for devices around the 486DX4 range of capability, and world famous as a marker of fast action and eye candy. I think it is ported as a technical demo of what is possible on the device, more than they expect the masses to actually be playing it.
SHOTT3R @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Being a Grammar Nazi, I find people correcting grammar who also have bad grammar themselves quite amusing. I really cannot blame most people, since they come from a poor education system. I'm not trolling; I was given a British education, and now that I'm here, I am apalled by how the US system is letting its kids down. That is however, off-topic.
For Michael Levy, there is no such word as "irregradless". Regardless, meaning "without regard to" works just fine.
DOOM is the greatest. I remember playing this on a Pentium-MMX with onboard video and a 33kbps modem. Danged UART haha
Jebus @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
SHOTT3R,
You forgot to put a coma after "...to": Regardless, meaning "without regard to, works just fine.
lol You have to understand, I just couldn't resist. :P

num10ck @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Not to mention that the UART could easily handle 115kbps at the very least, but the bottleneck was the dial-up compression routines and DSP-less hardware. Danged British, always asking for a buggering.

SHOTT3R,
Read a few soccer message boards, and you can enjoy more than a few Brits doing their best to murder the English language.
Now, to borrow a phrase from the UK, piss off!

Well I was given an American education, and I can spell appalled. ;D
P.S. Isn't Britain more known for tracksuits, gold hoop earrings and daytime chat shows rather than educational excellence these days?

Ha, at least you people can have this conversation. Up here in Canada, "doom" is the shape we make our igloos!
Worlock_ed @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Anyone remember the Doom port for the ZX Spectrum? It was only black and white and I only saw the demo which you can find as a ROM somewhere but it pushes the Speccy to it's limits.
James @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
I'm not worried too much about the performance issues of the 770 at this point. I got a very early 7710 and the performance was abysmal, but recent firmware upgrades have pushed that into the "acceptable" range. Nokia are very good at optimising their code, and they'll keep inching the performance up all the way to, and probably beyond, release. My only worry is that they'll ship it too early and bad performance will kill it, when six months down the line it would have sold like hot cakes.
Marco @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Looks like it took ages to set it all up, and I'd trash the screen playing it too.

Wow no wonder the industry cant win, we have the above comment then if you look on a next gen console thread people wont buy PSP unless they can run NES titles?
I love this site.
SHOTT3R @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Nicely done, Jebus. Except it's 'comma', not coma.
K-Balls, who the cap fits, let them wear it. Telling me to piss off and observing that tons of Brits have a poor grasp of the Queen's English does nothing to change the facts. America is middle of the pack overall, and back of the pack of industrialized nations when it comes to reading and math skills. There are lots of smart people here, obviously. It's possible you may have even met some. However they succeeded for the most part despite the system, not because of it.
As to Sarah Brabazon-Biggar, I've got nothin'. Didn't catch the appalled. My apologies, but I just couldn't resist the urge to troll this one time. Grammar police are teh funnay.
[/troll]
btw, I'm in America with a British education, but I am from neither of the two countries. Cheers!
Sarah Brabazon-Biggar @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
No apologies necessary for a typo; I was just funnin' you, as we American hicks say.

I understand that people tend to get exited of this kind of things, but before you drop your eyes with amazement, I'd like to remind that I played Doom on my 386/25MHz quite happily. So it's not a big *performance* proof of the hardware, though very cool otherwise.
And to be clear, I do think 770 is quite cool piece of HW.
epimanes @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
SHOTT3R,
Now, now. Nonsense such as this is a pure and simple setup for a spanking. Nobody likes a prententious show off.
"It's possible you may have even met some"... Now that is a classic split infinitive with a dangling participle if ever I have seen one! Perhaps you should get another English Education?
All in good jest, all in good jest!
