The greatest irony of bad breath is that you can't smell it—unless you have some seriously foul
halitosis-to-the-mostest going on up in there, in which case you wouldn't even need the Tanita Breath Alert, now would
you? And while you're at it, take a shower, would you?
Actually you don't need a machine to tell you if you have bad breath, just do this:
- Lick the underside of your wrist with the farthest-back part of the tounge you can.
- Wait 5 seconds or so...
- Smell it.
This gives you a pretty good indication of what your breath smells like at close range. If its bad, go give that same back part of your tounge is really good brush with a toothbrush and paste. Yes, you may gag but it's gotta be done. Apparently 30% of the population have a 'nasal drip' which makes up the majority of reasons for bad breath. It fixed mine, according to my GF!
Wow, that method works better than I thought it would. Well, I better go brush now then! I think I have that same nasal drip problem; could it be associated with allergies?
not only do 30% have a post nasel drip, BUT what gets in there sometimes stays in pockets (everybody has them), and collects and "rots" (breaks down via saliva and emits oders), literally. Sugar in candy, bakery, breads etc. rots fast. Try drinking flavored no-sugar selser/fizzy water, as that tends to clean/dilute the mouth and throat.
How accurate can this thing be?! Does it give you a reading like Pauly Shore in the movie Bio Dome where he's mentioning everything that the other guy ate?!
it's actually pretty accurate; my dad has one, and after you brush your teeth it reads only 1 dot. It's mostly just a fun gadget, but hey, if you feel the need to "check your breath" before going out, it does work well.
I've had one of these for a while and I'm not quite sure if it works. It seems to work in extremes like right after you brush your teeth, it shows one dot, and right when you wake up it's full of dots, but as for an actual measure during the day... I'm not sure...
Someone would be wise to combine this functionality with that of a portable breathalyzer. A bad breath + alchohol level check. I say this because it could be rather embarrassing to have a device that only does breath check or alchohol level. But if you had one device that did both, you could explain away your rationale for buying it to others depending on which use seems least embarassing function at the moment you are noticed to own the device - like 'Q. hey do you have bad breath all the time buddy?' 'A. no man, got this for when I go drinking with my buddies' or the other way around for questions like 'do you have a drinking problem or something?' 'No dude, my wife got me this as a joke for when we make out...'. Oh, and while you're at it, throw in: a small mirror to check your nose hair; a voice recorder; mp3 player; and phone, tee hee
I have own a Tanita Breath Alert for the last 3 years and approximatly 8 mo. ago it started to act-up. Is there any way I can have it fix or am I stuck.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
depending on the price of these they would be pretty funny to give as gifts, as little hints :P
Now are you guys talking about all the foul smelling people I sat with at this weekend's Defcon? =T
Foul...

"halitosis-to-the-mostest".
That made me laugh.

So you find out that you have terrible breath. Now what? This where a built in mint despenser or odor neutralizer would come in very handy!
