Aug. 4: What's on HDTV today

Shawshank

What we're watching and why:

At first I didn't like this film, but then the third or fourth time I watched it something magnetic drew me in. I'm referring to "Shawshank Redemption," which is showing in high definition tonight. I've only watched it on TV and DVD, so I imagine some of the scenes, especially the last one on the beach, are beautiful. And HD probably makes the prison look worse than I had imagined. You can catch the movie at 8 p.m. and 12:15 a.m. on HDNet Movies.

Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:

CBS: CSI (9 p.m.), Without a Trace (10 p.m.)
