Optoma RPTV disappoints in review

Optoma RD50A

I can't say I've ever heard of the "Optoma" brand, but I think I know why I haven't. If their products continue to get bad reviews, you'll likely never hear of them either. PC Magazine just reviewed their 50" rear-projection HD set, the RD50A, and the unit received a lackluster two out of a possible five.

On the specs alone, I see a few issues immediately. The 50-inch unit is missing a CableCARD slot as well as an HDMI jack, although it does have a DVI input with HDCP support. The DLP-powered set doesn't include a digital tuner and this is where the missing CableCARD slot really hurts.

The review goes into detail on the disappointing color accuracy as well. Regardless of input or content, the colors seemed out of whack and couldn't be readily adjusted. Although the set has high contrast for a DLP, the black levels were rated at five times higher than a comparable set from Samsung. Has anyone purchased or heard of the Optoma brand?
