How would you change the Mighty Mouse?
We haven't had a chance to put too many peripherals up on the ol' imagineering block yet, so here's a good excuse. Just bear in mind that this thread is not (yet another) excuse for a flame war, dig? We want constructive criticism here. How would you change the Apple Mighty Mouse?

make the touch buttons actually work.
first change, i'd dump this crappy mouse along with its crappy system...
I would have it use two switches and two buttons.
That is rather than a convoluted system of one switch and button with two touch sensors measuring finger presence with curious logic when the single switch is triggered. ie, going next door via a round trip across the globe.
Wireless would be nice. A rechargable base like some of the Logitech variety would be helpful then too. I'm not wild about the "nipple" thing instead of an actual scroll wheel and white body seems like it'd get pretty dirty after extended use.
It needs a display! First the Shuffle, and now this...
Throw it in the trash and buy a real multi button mouse?
I'd have it designed by a snarky 16 year old who'll be using it 16 hours a day and not by a design weenie that used a pen device and not a mouse...to create the mouse! DOH!
Lower "squeeze" buttons should be easier to click, and independent of one another- I need browser forward and browser back!
MAKE IT BLUETOOTH!!
i use one at work and love it....
but i have a wireless desktop at home and wanna keep it that way.
make the 360 scroll ball more accurate(i.e. real diagonal scrolling in design apps)
and of course wireless...wtf..i dont understand why they didnt add that feature..
Make it bigger... like.... ELEPHANT bigger.
All it needs in my eyes is a fifth button, maybe make the side buttons independent?
Then I've got a middle click for Safari and three spare for dashboard/expose, not to mention just enough buttons for a good game of Halo.
It works really well overall.. I'd like a Bluetooth version - that's about it!
raise the dot in the middle on a mound, make it flesh colored. i'd grope that nipple all day long...
I would make it bluetooth and add a 1gb flash drive - then you could take your mouse and your files with you.
make it so that everytime someone squeezes the side buttons, bill gates gets an electric shock on the ass
Right now, the middle button is the scroll ball, and it's too easy to click down. When I'm scrolling in Firefox, it's easy to accidentally click the middle button, which is set to "Back." So freaking annoying. It would be nice if it would "click" like a normal button.
Also, the fact that you can't right-click with your finger on the left button is pretty frustrating. But side-scrolling makes up for it all. When you're working with any kind of video timeline, it's worth its weight in gold.
Hurl feces at it and then give it to a fundamentalist islamic and fire a grenade at him.
i really can't stand that the mouse is one big giant button. i don't like how the whole thing moves when you try and click thats just really odd. also the price should either be lowered or it should be wireless/bluetooth. it doesn't seem to compete with similar logitech or microsoft mouse at this price range, because of the lack of wireless. the fact that you have index finger in oder to right click would drive me crazy.
Bluetooth, and make it easier to click the side buttons.

BAM! There you go. Oh, but you can keep the ball I suppose, except make the ball bigger and not so hard to move.
I suppose there should be a white version so everything looks pretty.
Id make it more affordable! $65 CDN is a bit expensive! But its still hot for a mouse!
wireless a must i think theses days
A slightly different color of white where the two touch-sensitive click thingies are!
bluetizzooth.
and, instead of using capitance just have two buttons: push down the scroll ball for right-clizzick. left-click is the rest of the mouse, just like the old apple mizzice.
wow, i've got to stop listening to this bad 4 year-old hip-hop.
If they are going to make a capacitance touch sensor on the surface, might as well make them scrollable a la logitech
a href="http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2135,CONTENTID=9508">V500
and make the two side buttons separate
They release a corded version first so people run out and buy it. Then a year later they release a Bluetooth version and the same people go and buy it again.
I'd make the side buttons easier to press (or make it a 5 button mouse). Aside from that, the mouse I played with @ the store was good.
Oh one more thing about the mighty mouse.
I know apple likes to be all innovative and they have their cute slogan "Think Different."
That's nice and all, but um... there is nothing wrong with being like everyone else once and awhile.
I can picture how the designers came up with the oneclick thats really two clicks feature.
"Okay guys we have to be innovative here, so lets Think Different."
"Hey I have an idea, lets cut down on that whole easy to use thing that all the other mice have. We'll make it harder to use, but we'll be unique. That's the important thing, being unique and different."
I'm sorry if that was harsh, but come on why fix something that works?
Zoom in/out (or increase/decrease text size) by scrolling up/down while pressing the side buttons. The scroll ball is really nice when you need it, but I need to zoom more often than i need to scroll horizontally. Please someone agree with me.
Move the scroll ball forwards a bit.
Wireless. Or a longer cord. Mine can barely reach around my iBook.
More benefits for Windows users.
Cake:
I'd just make it bluetooth-wireless.
Either that or in the engaget system put a usb female on the other side of it so power my toaster (which soon will run off usb as we know).
Who needs anything more than one giant button anyway? I would make it bluetooth or RF then make it look like something besides an egg with a cord stuck in it. Maybe some racing stripes or make the apple logo light up or anything to make people want it. When I look at this mouse I think who in their right mind will pay $50 for this mouse.
I played with this for a while and it was actually much better than I expected. As many reviews have said, the ball is a nice touch. And the whole right-click magic was not the disaster that early reviews seemed to suggest, but rather just worked (for me, anyway).
The side buttons, though, sucked. They're in a bad location, it's silly that you have to SQUEEZE, and you have to squeeze both of them.
So, I say: fix the side buttons. Move them further toward the "top", make them work independently, and ideally, give me two of them. Side buttons are great to use with Expose.
Wireless would be nice, but not until we get a bluetooth implementation that doesn't immediately suck down the batteries.
Ok.... all you people going on about wireless - please! My apple mouse has a cable and works far better than any wireless mouse I have ever used - it doesn't run out of bateries, or go crazy if I start using a wireless network anywhere near it. I think wireless peripherals are a bit of a waste of time - why do I need to operate my desktop from 10ft away? All things aside I think this is a great product from the best computer comany in the world - and at the end of the day I can still point and click.
would like the Billy Boy shock button though.....
make it bluetooth with a charging dock.
Make it bluetooth, with a dock
And also, make that scrolling ball a little bit bigger, looks like a clit...
Please Mr Jobs.
make it bluetooth AND usb
such as it can recharge that way and still be used with batteries flat.
Otherwise works great. A variable pressure sensor on the trackball would be great for 3D. Thanks for sending me one.
First and foremost (and probably obvious at this point): Bluetooth. I mean really-wtf-. Why try and squeeze two purchases. Most people are going to wait for BT, it's not like we need another corded device.
Second: A little flash wouldn't hurt. Oh hell, about 1GB. That would be nice.
Third: Real customization. We're all adults here. Let us decide which buttons do what (next thing you know there'll be TPM peripherals).
Fourth: And this NEEDS to happen: Sizes. I'd say the current Mighty is a small. I would like to see it in at least a large (if not XL)
Make it so you don't have to lift your pointer finger to click the right mouse button...
how stupid...
and bluetooth.
and a scroll-pad (like the ones on some notebooks). The nipple looks ugly.
Give it wings! You know, like those wings you see on those commercials... nevermind.
make it work. I love apple and I use apple, but this thing is truly awful! It doesn't matter where/how I click, it was randomly left/right clicks! The scroll wheel wasn't very responsive either. It looks cool but it doesn't work... and telling ME I'm using it wrong isn't going to change my opinion.
They should have gone more traditional with this thing and just given us a mouse that works.
you're using it wrong.
Am I the only one that use two mouse concurrently? Left hand - Logitech MX900, all buttons programmed w/ scrolls, etc. Right hand - Apple Mouse. Both use Apple's bluetooth. Picture: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v161/webhermit/desktop-v3.jpg
Why limit yourself to only one mouse? Thats just absurd...
I see absolutely nothing wrong with two clearly-defined buttons for left and right click. Whatever happened to Apple's "less is more" policy. Cause it seems to me that they over complicated the two button concept with the touch sensors and, as said above, went "next door via a round trip across the globe". By adding all these "features" they made the mouse more expensive than a Logitech MX518
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826104178
or the Logitech MeidaPlay Cordless
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826104168
And before anyone jumps on me about how this mouse is just supposed to be a basic mouse and not compete with either of those mice, I know that. But why should a basic mouse be more expensive than a specialized gaming/media mouse. My point is, they put way too much into it for it's function and made it way too expensive.
Nick
It was midnight as she lay in her bed, thinking of... him. Her chest rose and fell as she imagined him next to her, cupped around her body like the big spoon. Their body heat so close, giving rise to... bigger things. Her middle finger quietly caressed her nipple - up down, left right. With her left finger, she gently touched her left breast and felt a subtle electricity. Her right finger she lay on her right breast and pressed down lightly, to the feel of... nothing. She pressed down harder but... nothing! What the F*@K?! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS DAMN THING?!?!
-bluetooth 2
-easier to squeeze
-that whole "lifting your left finger to right click"... maybe if it was just a little more forgiving, just a little
An ergonomic design.
As much as I love this mouse, my hand is killing me trying to use the scroll ball. It's really nicely done for touch sensitivity, but to adjust to using it all the time is a real pain.
My only complaint is that the squeeze buttons are mostly useless in Windows, since you can't reprogram them, that I can tell. And personally, there are many things in life that don't need to be wireless. Keyboards and mice are two of those things. That's just pure laziness, friends, and I don't want a device required by my computer to be usable to go dead on me when I need it. Besides that, ever wireless mouse I've used has been a clunky piece of junk thanks to the batteries, or way too light, like the Wacom one that comes with a tablet, which is totally useless when not on its pad. Wired mice are the perfect weight.
Make the scroll ball larger. it's too insubstantive at the moment..
This mouse is great, I have had mine for about 10 days. Also, since I can walk and chew gum at the same time, I have no trouble with the left and right click thing. I also have a one button BT mouse, now I don't need that big box of batteries I got at Home Depot. I wouldn't change anything.
