iRiver U10 gets a price
You know, we keep wanting to trash the
U10 (iRiver's new ultra-tiny
flash-based portable video player), for only having a 2.2-inch LCD screen, but that's actually the same size as the
screen on the Archos Gmini 400
and we've had no problem watching plenty of video on that (besides, the 320 x 240 pixel screen on the U10 is actually
higher res than the 220 x 176 pixel display found on the Gmini). Anyway, we still don't have a confirmed release date,
but the U10 has finally made an appearance on iRiver's US website, looks like the MSRP will be $250 for the 1GB version
and $200 for the 512MB version.

This looks like to be a very friggin swell player of music and or video type files.
Thanks.
The pirce isn't too bad. I just which it has a CF or SD slot.
*buys one of those 20gig mp3/video players insted*
hmm, $399 for a 30gb zen vision vs. $250 for a 1gb U10.
That's actually a tough call for me. If the U10 had a SD or CF card slot then it'd be a no-brainer.
Or get a GBA-M and Play-Yan. Overall that'd probably cost a little more, but it'd be a more flexible system.
I think the main thing that's stopping portable video players from being popular is the lack of content. The MPAA has things locked up so tight that not even Microsoft can get their system off the ground, which leaves it to only the tech elite who know how to use illegal tools to get their video mobile. That's a shame, since Apple has certainly shown that there's a market for portable media. It really only leaves portable DVD players and the PSP as platforms that the MPAA is willing to accept.
And for about $300 you can get a PSP with a 1 GB memory stick and have the same thing as the U10 1GB with a bigger screen and more features.
Very good point #5. At these prices the U10 stinks...
I will be getting a ZEN Vision as soon as it's released.
I'll hold out for the £100 ($170-ish) GPX2 with 3.5" 320*240 screen and SD slot
archos gmini 400, 20 gigs, lots of features, compact flash slot, same price
That price isn't bad, all things considered. However, this device seems to be in a bit of a no-man's land, as far as I'm concerned.
Nice size and screen, but limited flash memory capability makes it's use as a PVP rather limited. At the same time, it's size makes it a bit bulky as a music player.
Regardless, I'm interested and want to see one firsthand before making final judgement. If they had one with a 4gig microdrive for $279, I'd buy one in a heartbeat..
1GB total?? Must be a joke... If only I owned iRiver... 4GB flash-based divx players for everyone!
Okay...so the screens are the same size...but the capacity isn't. I also think this iRiver is nice, but come on, 20GB v 1GB at the same price? At that point it doesn't matter how hi-res the screen is, if you wanted higher-quality video you'd be taking up more space that you don't have. No thanks. This thing has style over the GMini, but that's where it ends.
Very sexy looking device and it has fantastic features. However, it really needs to be larger than 1GB. Even 2GB would do ok, but 4GB, and I'm sold!
Im still buying it...
Look carefully at the last image on their web site (click either the 1GB model or the 512MB model, and rollover the last image of the device). You'll see a little slot on the bottom of the device. Is that the docking port (strangely deja vu, looks like the ipod docking port...), or is that an sd slot?
if the price is right for a 2gb version i'm sold it's so sexy looking
Check on Spanish (Europe) iRiver site. U10 comes in 1gb or 2gb (not 512k). I've seen on an eshop 1gb 220Euro, 2gb 256Euro;. Seems like iRiver is treating american costumers so bad!
