How would you change the Sony Ericsson W800?
Aight, y'all, let's hunker down for a little imagineering session with Sony's first Walkman phone, the W800, shall we? All we're gonna say on the matter is… orange? Other than that, we're leaving it all up to you. Tell Sony Ericsson whatchu really, really, want.

maybe a mini fridge, psp built in, and mac mini-ER
100 song limit
edge
I think the best change for the W800 would be putting one in my hand.
Standard 3.5mm headphone port, different colours in place of orange (orange would be selectable as well), mini-USB. The W800 is almost perfect, after all.
Windows Mobile
dumping it for a nokia!
I WOULD MAKE IT A SYMBIAN SYSTEM
Funny as this may sound to some of you, sync capability with Sony's Sonicstage (and upcoming Connect Player.) It would make it more of a direct competitor with the ROKR in that respect.
I don't know what else, since I don't own it (no GSM 850 - no good for me.)
QUAD BAND!!! My K750 disappoints me each time I lose my signal inside a concrete building =(
Slap a gun on there
wifi maybe?
i dont know there isnt too much wrong
Video recording in CIF resolution (352 x 288 pixels).
I actually love the orange, it's one of the reasons why I'm craving for a W800... it looks really fresh and hell, at least it's a lot cooler looking than that sorry excuse for an itunes phone ROKR.
But hey, that's just me.
But features? WI-FI would be cool, and had it been a clamshell phone, I would have SO already bought it. I'm easy to please. Features schmeatures, as long as it's shiny, round and pretty, I'm happy :P
Still, orange is this year's white (*cough* ipod *cough*).
A built in pepper spray canister would be nice.
Doesn't it already have a standard headphone jack?
What this camera needs is a flash upgrade. Something like this should work. http://bermangraphics.com/images/versatec_new1.jpg
They need to find a way to mount that on the phone though.
Sony Orange is way better than Sony Purple hehe
Definitely the headphone jack.
$free.99
#11 Elisa - I think SonyEricsson already have a clamshell version coming out?
I would go for 3G, OLED and GPS built in, a 3MP camera and a touch slimmer. But it is already near perfect a device I have seen at the mo.
I'd be pretty stoked if a U.S. carrier picked it up.
I agree with #11. LOVE the orange! Which is why I bought it over the K750 (and its sturdier keypad). Things I would like to see improved on the W800?
(1) Built-in headphones jack.
(2) The current Synchronization software with Outlook works, but terribly flawed when sync'ing with the phone. Especially so, when you have the "Keep Items on computer even if deleted on phone for..." options checked. It keeps duplicating my phone entries on the computer!
(3) Currently, Contacts sync does not sync up with Outlook's:
---- (a) Address
---- (b) Contact Picture
---- (c) Birthday
(4) WMA support with DRM!!!
(5) Faster processor! (altho' I have to congratulate W800 for one of the longest battery life ever!)
(6) Optional clear (transparent) case to show off the cute design.
(7) RSS Software.
(8) Podcast-support and A "skip to X minutes" feature for Walkman for those really long Podcasts!
(9) A "Turn off phone" option instead of the "use walkman" option. In other words, ability to edit contacts, check calendar, use notes, etc, while having the phone-feature turned off on a plane, etc.
(10) WiFi-support & EDGE support.
While these are features I'd like to see improved (Especially #2, #3 and #9 can be updated with software/firmware updates), I cannot stress enough that I LOVE THIS PHONE!!!
I want the w800 hardware combined with my PSP. HEY SONY, ORANGE SUCKS ! it's so cheesy it makes me want to puke.
oh, and remember... ORANGE IS NOT COOL.
Quad-band GSM - c'mon get with it SE!
looking for one, any good deals, I might swap my sony s700
Give me the 800 or 850 band and this thing would be mine!!! I would even take a Cingular branded one. Hello, Cingular!! It's already orange!!!
i hope the W850 would have
-3MP camera
-WI-FI
-better reception
-standard jack
-perhaps a USB mini jack for memory access and perhaps charging(a new feature which you could activate or deactive when syncing phone with pc).
-Itunes
-100 song limit
-usb 1.0
cooler name, like rotyajhlykr
It so very sorely needs USB 2, USB 1 is too damn slow for shunting music files over.
Also, SD cards as opposed to memory sticks, because then I could afford a bigger card (stuck with 512Mb in mine).
Finally, the ability to read metadata from .mp4 and .m4a files, since a lot of my music library is AAC ripped in iTunes.
And to all those people who want a 3.5mm jack on the handset, consider then that there'd be no mic near your mouth when it rings in your pocket. You'd be all fumbly in your pocket, while the cool people just finger the button on their microphone.
Paint that bitch black and name it something fun yet evil/bad like FuCK.
#24 - FUKR would make a nice ROKR-like name.
quad band, quad band, quad band, quad band...
did i mention quad band?
I love this phone in nearly every way, but the 2 main probs with it are Sony's stubborn reliance on proprietary tech:
no 3.5mm jack
only memory stick support
I would love this phone just the way it is....maybe if it was cheaper...and available from a major carrier.
While I am dreaming..... 10 gig integrated flash memory, GPS system that works as an in car, or on foot navigation system (google maps). Ejectable USB 2.0 connector (no cable required), so this can be used as portable hard drive. 5mp camera and second headphone port for standard headphones.
I've had mine a few days now, and there's nothing I've come across that is screaming to be changed. The following are merely a 'would be nice.'
Being able to assign different ringtones and SMS alerts for each profile (like I could on the K700, and, I'm sure, other phones of that era) would be nice, and easily added in a firmware update.
As has been mentioned before, a true flight mode: being able to simply turn the radio off while still having access to the remaining features of the phone (like on the P800/900).
Either SD support, or lowering the price of Pro Duos. A 2Gb Pro Duo is the same price as an iPod nano ffs!
Other than that, I love it.
- Apple iSync compatability (a guy can dream)
- iTunes compatability (again, i know...)
- Standard headphone jack
- Better keypad (like Nokia's 6170, but in orange)
- Sleep timer on the Walkman function
- Lie flat design (no camera lens sticking out)
All relatively minor issues with an otherwise perfect device.
Get rid of the stupid orange colour.
Redesign the camera shutter.
Make it thinner.
Have it run iTunes.
iTunes
I honestly wouldn't change anything but maybe to add a regular headphone jack. Other than that this is what the iTunes phone should have been. I am this close to buying this phone for my wife and the K750 for me. I haven't bought it only because I'm heading to Iraq soon and wouldn't need a phone then. Other than that I am buying this phone (or whatever the current model is) when I get back. This phone is next to perfect in my opinion.
Nothing to change. Looks good to me. Now if I only I can have one that would be nice. Send me one and I'll tell you what needs change.
iTunes, iTMS and iSync compatibility.
My recently retired Samsung Uproar blows this sucker away. My mp3/cell phone was a similar form factor, yet it had a flip to protect the keys while in a pocket. It also had a 3.5mm headphone jack.

I used the thing for over 4 years before it finally kicked the bucket and I was forced to upgrade to a Treo 650.
If the N91 has a 3.5mm jack, it would own.
headphone jack
quad band
wifi (yea its a stretch but itd be nice)
What do I do with a phone:
I talk: so I want a good speaker-phone
I listen to MP3: so I want build in bleutooth connection for my bleutooth headset. I hate wires !
I make pictures: 2Mp is enough, but I want crisp quality.
I send SMS messages: so I want a full qwerty keyboard or a touch screen qwerty keyboard.
I carry my phone in the pocket of my trouser, so I want a small phone.
Re #26:
It DOES have USB 2.0, it also has Bluetooth 2.0 EDR+ so it kicks ass syncing to the latest macs wirelessly.
3 MP camera, optical zoom, different joystick (this type broke all the time on my T610), bigger screen(!), slimmer.
I have the K750i (almost identical) and I love this phone...
Longer battery life for MP3 playback.
Replacable Cases.
Given, some faceplates during the nokia craze were shit and made everyone have seizures when the clear setups with blinking leds came out, this would give people the option of having a different color phone without having it be a different model. It'd also be a lot nicer being able to replace the case than having to buy a case that would go over it and protect it then making it bulkier.
I'd also like to see rss with alerts, wifi, and cheaper 2gb memory sticks.
Otherwise, I find it perfect.
Needs 850Mhz band for USA reception ouside of larger cities
Why a high end phone like this doesn't get offered to the USA is beyond me! 850 Mhz band is ESSENTIAL in the USA.
I wanted to get this phone so bad, but without 850Mhz I'll have to look at another model with expandable memory.
I have the k750 flashed with the w800 software. Same phone, different colour.
But what it needs is:
headphone jack
.sis support (for those fancier apps like opera)
3G (although the z800i offers this)
wifi (stuff that nerd dreams are made of)
but at the end of the day, I'm really happy with it.
