Probably Totally-fake video iPod mockup roundup
There must really be a demand for this video
iPod thing you kids have been talking about because we've received roughly six hundred fifty thousand tips over the
last couple of days of the various supposed incarnations this thing could take. Granted, a lot are pretty freaking
awful and they're all starting to look a lot alike (which is how it was estimated to look way back when, anyhow), and
sure, we're only a few days out before we find out the
real deal—but what the hell, let's have some fun. Just
don't feel too disappointed when the thing isn't announced (yet again) and these possible and probable fakes go
from straight up fake to really fake, ok?
So, know of some more video iPod mockups? Leave 'em in comments!

First of all this one is so fake. Its really easy to tell. And you know how, look closely the 2 ipods arent really touching eachother. They are about 2 mm apart eachother.
DUHHH!!!
akarol @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
Am I the only one getting tired of the iPod look? You figured they would come up with a new design by now...

If there isnt any DRM crap on the video ipod, Im definately getting one. If it requires some stupid DRM, I rather get a PSP

All this video ipod stuff is non sence. Maybe the big media thing is to show off some intel powered apples.
Snoweman @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
I have a couple of things to say:
1. If the looks like that then its pretty lame of apple to not redesign the thing even a little. I hate that stupid scroll wheel and I'm sure if they do have one on the not yet announced ipod video, then it will look more like the ipod nano scroll wheel with the larger inner button.
2.I am sick of poeple drooling over this thing, unless it has bluetooth headphones and an extremly slim profile, then its nothing special. Plus im sure it wouldnt be able to play all the video formats that we would like it to.
There are much better ways that you can be spending the 400 or more dollars it will probably cost
Ryan Block @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
Alex, I used the word fake no less than four times in that post, mockup twice, and a bunch of other language to make it perfectly clear: we don't think it's real. How could we make this any more obvious?

The button words aren't even at the same place! The MENU word is on the longer side of the ipod in one picture and in the center in the other picture. FAKE FAKE FAKE.

"If there isnt any DRM crap on the video ipod, Im definately getting one. If it requires some stupid DRM, I rather get a PSP"
i'm sure the video iPod will play non-DRM tracks in addition to DRM tracks. just exactly as how the non-video iPod does.
willing to bet any user created H.264 media will work fine. probably any default-included QT codecs should work is my guess.
one Automator action away from creating a drop folder to auto-convert and upload your non-standard movies to your video iPod as well. (unless you use WMV3... in which case you'll have to purchase Flip4Mac... since i can't seem to find anything else that lets you convert the newer WMV files.)
Antonio Banderas @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
I had always thought that Apple should have pulled an iRiver U10, and had the entire front of the device be a screen, but have the wheel part be touch sensitive and have the ability to press the parts of the click wheel where the buttons were. You could do this to keep the same physical design for the novices, but when you watch video, you turn it around and watch videos on the entire device on a widescreen display. But then again, that is just an idea.
benswa @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
This prototype is not well suited for left handed folks like me. Guess I'll have to fake it with my right hand.

I've been waiting for something ividish for a long time. Mainly due to the fact that I have a season of Stargate on my ipod for my travel needs. I really thought that someone would have hacked it by now but hey if I can do it legal even better!

Biometric access? That detects a reader's BS filters and common sense?
And why are you taunting the Apple Fanboys with these mockups? It's just not fair!
And i'm sure it'll be a video iPod. I got my 60GB three months ago, and I seem to habitually buy things from Apple three month before their updated (to the day for my two desktop systems).
Makes sense. *nod*

I'd prefer if these Photoshop hacks would think different. For example why not give me a fake iPod Video unit in black, like the sexy little Nano. Or maybe brushed aluminum, a la Powerbook. If someone was really creative, maybe they could provide something with a pen and two screens.

Again I say...
My money is on an updated Airport Express that has a display and a remote. The portable video player market isn't ready for Apple yet.
Alex @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
The future of Apple is the Mac Mini, or incarnation thereof, not the iPod, which is a storage device - and storage on your person is not the future - nor practical - nor secure. Think streaming everything by 2007 approx. Anyway, as per every Apple announcement, everyone speculates in one direction, and the reality is in another. Who predicted the iPod, the iPod Nano, the Mighty Mouse? We're always so wrong, unless it's an obvious upgrade, such as faster Powermacs or PowerBooks etc. And if I dare be brave, with what Apple have done in miniaturisation with the Nano, consider that an ultra sleek Sony VAIO killing lightweight Nano thin yet speedy PowerBook Nano could arrive, after all, Apple has no ultra-light portable offering. Hmmm?
Dave @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
These pictures are absolutely fake. There are glaring photoshoppings as in some of the 16:9 aspects are messed up, or the corner don't match, or the scroll wheel looks too sucky. A lot of these look like "official" Apple promos, and if they are, Apple's promos won't be this bad. All we need to do is figure out the name and then sniff out a picture on Apple's site.
Brian @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
I don't see the reason to get a personal video player, i'm already pumped with media by the masses everyday, and you can go anywhere to see a movie/ tv show. But heck, here ya go, i'll play this game :b

Tien @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
People are so uninventive when it comes to making fake stuff... Come on! Do something MORE than stretch the screen - realize there's proportion and actual design involved.
I don't know, but I'm thinking that the iPod video won't have a scroll wheel. Rather, why waste the front space on it? If they were smart, they'd put it on the side and save the precious front for the screen. (Besides, if it's in video mode, why the heck would you NEED to fast forward/reverse THAT much?) Perhaps it'll be a double-sided thing - front has the standard iPod look, back has a big screen.

Steve @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
I made my own mockup on this a couple of months back...
http://www.ruxp.net/2005/08/video-ipod-my-2-cents.asp
The big thing with mine was that I maximized the screen by making the screen touch-sensitive and building the scroll wheel right into the screen :)
Chase @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
If any one of you think these are real photos, you are completely retarded. Enough said. Now I'm not saying the video iPod would not look like these MOCK-UPS (it probably will) but these are obviously fake. Apple has no product leaks these days (at least not photographically anyway). Here's a kicker. What if there is all this hype for nothing? I do think the red curtain sort-of alludes to movies, however its not a 100% sure thing and it won't be for certain until the morning of the 12th. It would seem odd that there would be a new iPod release as huge as this after the recent nano, but it is possible. It would detract from the nano holiday sales possibly - but the two products would be for different markets anyway. What if it is a refreshed shuffle with a small color screen? With their new flash kick this is not entirely out of place. I'm a college student and I work at best buy for something to do (suprisingly I sell iPods everyday) and I have to admit the iPod photo sales are definately slowing. I also find it odd that the 60 gig is yellow tag right now (closeout)...and as a retailer these things are planned in advance - so i believe there will be a goodbye party for the 60 and a hello for the new family memeber. All of this coupled with the new toshiba 40 and 80 perp. drives...its all a'brewin...I guess we'll see what happens on the 12th!
Elias @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
Can someone (other than an Apple fanboy) please explain to me how a portable video player can be useful?
moeed m @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
there is also a possibilty that apple might decide to launch their own broadband internet-tv serive. I wouldnt be surprised...

Ask a psp owner.
Elias @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
I would, but they're a little hard to come by. And even if I did find one of the very few who own a PSP, do I really want to trust the opinion of someone who bought one? ;)
Yo Mama @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
Oh, please, please make it with a big-ass screen so it can scratch even better than the nano does!
Josh Glaser @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
My favorite iPod video mockup of all time:
http://www.mobilemagazine.com/archives/2005/09/rd_apple_ipod_m.html
People watch movies differently than they listen to music. Would a clickwheel even be as necessary? While the design above could use some refining (the corner buttons should simply go on the trackpads, and the fast-forward/rewind control shouldn't be on such an easily bumped trackpad), it does offer an interesting take on the iPod video.
Will Apple reinvent the wheel (sorry) with the iPod video? I guess only time will tell.

I got apple-insider news about the video iPod just 30 seconds ago, I rushed over to Engadget to spill the beans! Here is the **REAL** Video iPod officially called "iVideoPod".
Again, this is 100% real, expect to see it at your local Future Shop and Best Buy tomorrow morning around 7:39 am.

evo @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
I feel the predominant presumption about the orientation of the click-wheel must be wrong. I find it hard to believe that Apple would bias the device to being used in landscape mode, much less bias it toward the right-handed (a much larger proportion of "creative" and technical people--Apple's primary market--are left-handed than the general population). They'll come up with something more interesting I think--if they ever create one, that is. Honestly, I don't see the market for it...
Furthermore, unlike these fakes, the device would almost certainly sense its orientation and display menus according to how the user is holding it. Digital cameras with flip-out viewers already do this.
tacotaco @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
"Can someone (other than an Apple fanboy) please explain to me how a portable video player can be useful?"
If you fly alot in coach (on routes with older planes), spend time on mass transit, etc.
If it had archos like support for downloading DVR'ed shows, then it would be a real winner in my book.
Post #32 is pretty much exactly what I've been hoping for. I want a big screen on a small device and until flexible displays come, the best we're going to get is by eliminating buttons on the front and minimizing screen margins.
Eric @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
If they do have a video player, I hope it supports swf files.
CoreyTheGent @ Dec 19th 2005 1:06AM
The one created by Steven Saxon and the Mobile Magazine mockup posted by Josh Glaser are the most impressive. It would have to virtually be all screen if Apple wanted my money. Steven's idea of incorporating the scroll wheel into a touch-screen is an excellent idea.
Now look at again, ya bastards:
