Akimbo for Media Center debuts
Akimbo just did exactly what we asked them to do back in June: they're ditching the box and offering their IP video-on-demand service as a plug-in for Windows Media Center PCs. Yeah, you can still get the standalone box, but they've just announced Akimbo for Media Center, which should be available beginning October 25th. Sounds like it'll be more or less the same deal as the regular Akimbo IPTV service, for $9.99 a month you'll have on-demand access to all their Free For All programming, with premium content costing more. Exactly what they needed to do to stick around, since the last thing anyone wants is yet another box in their living room. Now all they need to do is offer a wider selection of shows.

Baby steps...
Good move for Akimbo. Hopefully in a year they'll be a service worth owning.
Anyone else notice that they cleared out their forums? There used to be hundreds of posts. People complaining about the servcie, etc.
Not there are no posts at all. Yet, do a search of members and you'll see a bunch of post counts.

Wow! I hope this works well, because this is very interesting. I signed up to try it out. I *will* pay for this if it works well.
I firmly believe that this is the direction tv-based entertainment is going in the next 5-10 years.

Ridiculous. The justification of the Akimbo box was to bring desktop video to your TV. It certainly wasn't content, because their "free" (meaning, what you get with the paid subscription) is crappy stuff you can download for free elsewhere anyway.
Now if the box is gone, could someone explain to me how they expect people will pay them to get the privilege to dowload stuff to their computer, when the content is already available elsewhere? I think the really smart move would have been to shutdown operations completely. They're clearly completely out of steam... buh-bye now.

If Akimbo had decent Japanese programming, I would jump on it in a heart beat. They have around eight different countries listed, but no Japan love? Sigh.
