Gizmondo launches in North America
We're a bit surprised we didn't get a liveblog-like stream of emailed press releases from Tiger Telematics this morning because today's their big day in North America. That's right, the Gizmondo is officially on sale for $229 with fourteen launch titles. They did roll deep by buying a full-page ad in USA Today with Verne Troyer (aka Mini Me) shilling the Gizmondo, but we're not so sure a launch with some weak hype, obvious insecurity with their press presence, abysmal sales abroad, and a third of a billion in mounting debt is reason enough for Tiger's EU managing director Carl Freer to be "extremely proud of what [they've] achieved."
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Is it just me, or does it look like a hughe metal block with dents in it. :|
i guess youve never seen one then.. go see one its smaller than the ds or psp.
i personally didnt like the lack of hyping up the gizmondo has had deffintly a case they need to get rid of the slacking marketing dept.
i'll let the psp lovers bitch now as they normally do when the gizmondo gets a nod in the news. :D
this is probably why they fasly claimed that they tracked a criminal the other day! this explains alot!
nah they can do that with gizmondos as they have to go through the gizmondo system for gps, im guessing it works like cell phone blocking and tracking
>
...crickets chirping...
Holy shit! These are historical news of epic proportions! I am *soooo* glad the wait is finally over. OMG! OMG! Can anybody confirm that Minesweep and Solitaire are indeed part of the 14-game lineup? xoxo
how the hell do you refer to the buttons? i thought playstation buttons were kinda goofy when it came out, but at least you can refer to them as "triangle, square, circle, x." are you supposed to say "approximate equal sign, three vertical lines, and nine dots?"
So it's finally out, eh? I wonder if it'll see the end of the year... Or even the beginning of next. They've got a lot of fighting to do.
"how do u execute a super fireball u ask?..well first press the 2 squigly lines...then tap on the 3 lines of dots real fast...after than hold down , left then hit the 3 regular lines...then..."
"....."
>reason enough for Tiger’s EU managing director Carl Freer to be
>“extremely proud of what [they’ve] achieved.”
You mean ex-managing director. He resigned from Tiger Telematics 2 days ago http://sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1065581/000126967805000205/tiger8k102005.txt :
"The Company further announced the resignation of Carl Freer as Chairman of the Board and as a Director effective October 20, 2005. In addition Mr. Freer resigned as Managing Director of Gizmondo Europe, Ltd. and as an officer and employee of all other subsidiaries."
Looks like the rats are jumping from the sinking ship...
8, I would just say squig, dot, line, circle.
oh, and i am one of the psp lovers. i love my psp. I still would have considered this if they'd skipped this and went right to widescreen.
I have not met one person - online or in real life excited about this device. Tiger, you have no chance in hell.
in ten years you all are going to wonder where you where when the giz launched.
right here baby.
this thing is such a disgrace. fake screen shots on the official website, years of lies in the press. this whole charade was a scheme for the top execs to rob this company of anything valuable while they take as much as possible without being caught.
HAHA look at the shoulder buttons..!!!!
Maybe they are pulling a "the producers" dealio. If gave them some of your hard-earned cash, you should start looking for it, and ask yoiurself why you gave them any.
Does it have Harvest Moon?
What? No?
It will fail for sure.
Brad
Who the heck chose the characters on the buttons? ABCD was too hard/copyrighted?(can't be). Reminds me of the symbols on those cards for psychic tests.
Yuck. Did they employ the ROKR guys to design this?
I can't wait for these things to fail then drop to a mere $25.00 on ebay. I am sure after they get raped by all the wonderfull hackers out there that it could be a great emulator toy and I can upgrade my psp to version 879.5
#8 makes a great poit. How crappy of a Sony rip off is the button layout. It would have been better to label them 1,2,3,4. Using symbols instead of letters and numbers is no big deal but then you make them so ugly and crazy that it is just confusing. They are definitely playing hide the sausage with the company (#11 makes a great point also).
i mean i know a lot of people dont want to spend 250 on the PSP, like me, why the hell would you buy this for 229?! i want a psp so badly. and like the logical part of me says- well this is for a psp post, but the important thing is this, tiger did something that will go down in history - as the worst product launch ever.
thats an old screenshot, the actual Giz, has a play stop rewind, and fast forward button, and i am happy it came out here, now i have a new multimedia device and a camera
This is the pic of the final product:
http://www.gizmondo.com/webshop/images/devices/silver_gizmondo_front.jpg
It still looks disgusting.
I'll just file this next to my Virtual Boy when I pick it up at my local videogame shop for $20.
so whats actually wrong with it? Honestly, you guys are so funny.
I'm kinda with 'is' on this one. Sure, there's a lot of things the Gizmondo ISN'T (like...a PSP, a DS, an iPod, a device that's likely to go mainstream...) but there's a lot of things that it IS. It's a gaming device, an mp3 player, a video player, a text messager, a digital camera, and a GPS device. It's also only $229 (though I'm sure, to do all those things I mentioned reasonably well you're going to HAVE to buy some accessories).
I ain't saying it's better than the PSP or DS, or that it is in any way at all a threat to their dominence, but what's with all the hate ?
Certainly everyone is free to talk as much trash as they like...but why ? Stack this device up against all those pdas out there that people pay $250 for and then never use, or never use for pim anyway. Is it such a bad deal, considering ? Or up against $300 - $800 gps devices that people add to their cars for navigation that do nothing but. See ? It's got some validity.
Probably not enough to keep the line alive...but a few people out there will probably be happy to get it.
There, now I've given my soap-box-cumbaya rant...I've got it out of my system (for now)...the fanboy anti-rants my now commence...
ok number 23 here we go:
bad design
terrible game lineup
bad pr
bad camera, no flash or zoom
unrealized potential
bad mp3 player
price
announced widescreen version before they
released this one
advertisements
basically it tried to do everything but doesnt do anything well
did i miss anything?
Before you start talking out of your asses, I have playtested one of these suckers.
"It's a gaming device, an mp3 player, a video player, a text messager, a digital camera, and a GPS device. It's also only $229 (though I'm sure, to do all those things I mentioned reasonably well you're going to HAVE to buy some accessories)."
FALSE. All those things are already included. They are all inbuilt. Additionally, the camera is behind the giz, which can be used to play games. For example, by moving the giz around, you can play a first person shooter game (Camera tracks movement relative to the environment). Again, these are potential things it can do. There is alreadya game where you keep the giz in one place, and you can build stuff with the camera looking at your hand movments and projecting them on the screen.
Personally, I was hoping they didn't do sim card. Maybe a hard-drive>?
embassy: That's exactly what I was thinking when I first saw that picture.
"Ah we best not use normal shapes, those belong to sony!"
So what are they called in game?
'Press the button with a bunch of dots on it to continue, or the one with a few lines or something to exit.' Stupid.
It really doesn't help that that's one of the ugliest handhelds I've ever seen.
GPS would be a cool feature though.
Trailblazer would be awesome for the DS or PSP. One of the best games I've seen for a long while. Furious Phil looks awesome and would be great as a PSP title(probably the best looking title for the Gizmondo yet, when it gets released). And I wouldn't say no to Carmaggedon. Conflict: Vietnam is probably worth looking into. Future Tactics looks badass. Hockey Rage 2005 looks awesome.
These are the games I'd look foward to, they're all kick ass titles from what I've seen(except Conflict: Vietnam, there are only a few screenshots so I can't really make out if it's gonna be awesome).
Why don't you people shutup, and just give the thing a chance. I have the PSP and the DS, both aren't that great. Your people are trying to kill it just like you did the Dreamcast.
umm the dreamcast was one of THE best consoles ever( although shortly lived) and was from one of the most respected video games companies of all
time...this is the fuckin "gizmondo"..c'mon..say that with me outloud..GIZMONDO...which is developed by a -300 million dollar tech company...umm...yeh...nothing else needs to be said...
This thing sucks. I hope they go bankrupt for such a stupid idea. That said, maybe I am just hoping it fails so I can get one at GameSpot for $30 in a few months and try to hack it.
actually it does do gps...
http://www.gizmondo.com/mygiz/giz_navigator_2006.asp
Ok almost everyone that has been pointing out problems and dissing this has not done their research.
The image is an OLD image and the buttons are different.
It has a LOT more features than the PSP and you cannot find a device with all those features for the same price. The only real problem with usability of this is the battery life and screen size.
"The only real problem with usability of this is the battery life and screen size."
The only REAL problem is lack of developer support and... other than its ugly.....
if 90% of people hate it, its dead in the water

Why is engadget still got this up top?
Move along please, nothing more to see here.
I thought the world learned its lesson with the taco-shaped cell phone.
I was once told history does not repeat itself because the circumstances are never the same, which I believe. But I can't stop thinking that it maybe isn't a coincidence this time.
It actually looks pretty decent, I think. The WideScreen Version which supposedly comes out soon looks good. With better launch titles, a hardrive instead of SD Cards, the widescreen, better camara....I'd buy it.
This First Version though, is lacking. If Tiger Telematics can pick it up with Version Two, they might be able to pull it off.
We have one in our company, and personally I like the looks. Also, once you hold it in your hands, it feels incredibly rugged. I mean military-grade tough compared to the PSP or DS. The surface even has a rubbery feel to it so you can grip it better.
It was designed by the same guy who designed the looks for the Spectrum BTW.
There's just the slight annoyance that there aren't any games for it :-P
History repeat itself? This isn't the second time, it's about the 5th or 6th time. Just recently we had the Ngage and Zodiac. I actually bought the Zodiac because I needed a PDA, but like all devices that integrate a lot of features, they do a lot, and they suck at everything. The PSP is an exception, because they only put features in it that you would actually want from that type of device, and it does them well. The Gizmondo doesn't even have a touch screen, so I don't even see how it can compete with the Zodiac, and that thing failed misserably. Why do companies even make devices like this, unless you can have the backing of huge game developers, it's going to fail. They would be better off just trying to make a cool PDA or something. No one is going to buy this thing, we all know it, even someone that likes to get every gadget like me.
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot:
http://urbansurfer.dyndns.org/syitf.jpg
If it did full speed NES/SNES/Genesis/MAME with sound, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. The market still doesn't have the perfect emulation gaming handheld.
PSP isn't really there, although the screen is sure nice. Plus Sony keeps trying to stop it.
Why don't you mention about the actual product itself, instead of the marketing campaign??
soeaking fo the wide screen version, would you buy this if you knew tiger was either going to go bankrupt or make a better version? i mean they announced it before they announced this one.

wow, for the gps to work, you just need Gizmondo Navigator 2006.
it divides the U.S. into four regions for 169 each. or get them all for the low low price of... well 249.
where else can you get a gaming machine that does so much for just under 500 dollars? Fuck the x-box, playstation and revolution... the real revolution starts here.
One of the biggest jokes in gaming history = gizmondo and it's 'executives'
by revolution i mean "consumer initiated class action lawsuit"
For the GPS functionality to be useful in the GPS-enabled wireless games, you need alot of people with the devices. I really don't think that'll happen
Thanks for bringing up the already announced widescreen version! On top of that it's supposed to do WiFi too!
So them already announcing they are working on a widescreen wi-fi version (mainly to compete with the PSP) why would anyone even bother to waste over 200 bucks on this "guinea pig" batch when it's already going to be outdated in no time?
They should have just put the widescreen wi-fi version out the door first and maybe it would have had a chance.
What's that other handheld that just died recently? It looked almost the same.. the Zodiac! The developers pulled the plug on that one's short-lived life as well.
Gizmondo is sure to follow. I mean hell, FIFA *2005* ?!?!? This thing's been delayed so long even the games are old. I'm playing 2006 on my DS why would anyone want to drop back a year?
I don't understand all of the hatred towards the Gizmondo, either. I think Tiger Telematics has made some significant strategic blunders, but at the same time they've brought some very good ideas to the table.
It's clearly going to be an uphill battle for them--there's no disputing that. Their main obstacle is just to get shelf space at most of the major retail chains--Tapwave couldn't do it, and even a huge company like Nokia is having difficulty with some retailers pulling out. If Tiger Telematics can remain focused, and get developers to produce a solid line of quality software (I'm not going to judge games I haven't played, and neither should anyone else), then there's no reason they shouldn't deserve at least a small amount of success as a niche product.
The widescreen version they have in development (with a 480x272 pixel screen, same resolution as PSP) looks really good. I kind of wish they skipped the US release of the original model, and went straight to the widescreen model, even if it meant waiting a few more months for a proper launch. They risk angering early adopters if they should release such a vastly improved model just a few months after the original.
you're reading too much into it.
I'd like to think i can bash somethings shortcomings without you thinking theres some kind of personal rancor involved.
Its a piece of plastic. I don't hate it, and when i make fun of its hideously overpriced GPS software, or the fact that their decision to release a better version a year down the road BEFORE the original was availble has pretty much castrated them, i'd like to be able to do so as one who makes astute observations. I'm not a hater, i'm realistic.
tiger has problems, marketing has problems, the gizmondo has problems, executives are quitting, and so on. This is as bad as dating a person with emotional baggage.
I wonder if they'll even be around a year from now...
again: YOU ALL SUCK

The major reason why i have so much anger for it is to stop anyone from buying it.
First of all tiger is in the hole for 300 million dollars, and they have been getting deeper for a few years now. Second of all, its a gaming system which has no games, especially no games that use any of its features. third, it is well overpriced, its almost as much as a psp. i just hope no one buys it without really thinking deeply about where they are sinking there money, i know someone that could use it alot better, like http://www.savethechildren.org

OK, so the problem with Gizmondo is that it costs less than a PSP and it's made by a company that has lost money this year despite children starving in other countries? WTF? I looked at it, liked the design (it's not a phone so n-gage comparisons don't count) liked the specs and the screens I've seen so far. I even thought the price was OK (though I'm not too keen on the adverts). Now I feel like an arse for looking at a portable while children are starving. Especially with it costing less than a PSP. (About your second point, I'm trying to imagine games that don't use the 400mhz processor, GPU or colour screen, but I guess you meant the camera or GPS which only upcoming games are likely to use)
Your all idiots.
This design is rather lacking, but the internal hardware and connectivity cannot be beat - if it worked well! I am personally waiting to see if the GWS (giz wide screen) makes it out in the US.. then I would buy one.. since it add WiFi, along with BT and GSM/GPRS, the more acronyms, the better.
Plus, it dosnt look as dorky. For me, the games are secondary.. this is more like a PDA with out the OS.. just the fun of the console itself. Games, video, camera, connectivty.. wide screen, music.. not bad. I hope the GWS makes it.
"OK, so the problem with Gizmondo is that it costs less than a PSP"
by 20 bucks, which isnt that much only about 9% difference
"you meant the camera or GPS which only upcoming games are likely to use"
yes i meant the untraditional features, and who knows if they are likely to be used, most gps games work with more than one person having one.
"and it's made by a company that has lost money this year"
not only have they lost money this year, 230 million dollars in about 6 months, up from 99 million from all of last year. they are probably about to be shut down for illegal practices, or should be. why dont you read this article:
http://gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=11845
as for the Save the Children thing, its just to make a point.
and why buy one when there is a way better version coming out soon?

damnit people. youre so stupid. give the damn thing a chance. even if the buttons were stupid shapes like you say they are, they would probably do the same exact thing the any playstation system has done, in fact, maybe all consoles current out. just have a picture of the symbol on the button. i mean, when, recently, has a game said, in-game, to press a certain button, and just type out the button normally?
and whoever mentioned battery life, do you look up anything? cause i read that this get 24 hours of battery life. i dont see the problem there.
this system could be great, just give it a chance. i mean, sure, not the best idea to make a new version of the console before it even comes out, but if it has all the same features as this one, camera, gps, sd card, media player, etc., then it would be so much better than the psp. and i know it has 2 added things, WiFi, and tv out ports. i mean, thats just awesome. you can watch the videos on it on your tv, or play games on tv, and use it as a controller, thats something sony should have definately thought of when making the psp.
the one thing i wanna know about this, is with its GPS and playing games around the world with people, and the fact that it has a SIM card, do you have to pay a fee like a cell phone?
So far the game selection for the Gizmundo is about as exciting as the PSP's lineup! I hope they don't take as long to release a good game as Sony has(GTA:LCS is the first one) I actually got some hands on time with the Gizmundo back in May at E3, and it's not really a bad device. Just the marketing sucks for it.

wtf do starving children have to do with this fricken portable? why bring it up? if you feel so bad about it then donate to a charity and stfu! this discussion is about a gaming device not world hunger!!! what if everyone did their part about it and stopped pretending to "feel bad about it" wouldnt you think there would be less starving people in the world? people like you pretend to care that much but you dont pick up a phone and call... this is not a medium for the topic so i suggest unless little children are being forced into slave labor to build this device DONT BRING IT UP
I've seen screenshots for several upcoming Gizmondo games and they look pretty good. Yeah, all the launch titles are lousy, but have to remember; the PSP's current game library isn't all that great either. Its good to see new companies enter the gaming hardware industry, but it seems they are all playing their cards wrong. The people at Tiger Telematics should have seen the failures of when you combine a handheld gaming system with something else. The Nokia N-Gage(Cell Phone), and Tapwave Zodiac(PDA). What may seem like a good idea is in reality a bad one, and now we have the Gizmondo(GPS System). I just wonder why a GPS System? It's just as much of a dumb idea as a cell phone or PDA. Many gamers just don't need those kinds of features in a handheld system, these features only drive up the cost of the system itself, the Gizmondo will be $399, that’s just way to much for a handheld, its more worth holding on to your money and buying a next-gen console. Gizmondo could have been a force, but to many useless features leading to a high price tag on top of a poor marketing plan, it will soon join the N-Gage and Tapwave Zodiac in the videogame hardware graveyard.
This device has got alot of potential. You shouldn't knock it before you've tried it. There's some pretty neat games coming out in the next 2-3 weeks. They're going to push that Nvidia chip hard, then you'll be able to see what it can do.
I got one & the Sat nav is spot on, it's really neat. You won't be able to buy anything at this price for all the things it's capable of doing.
Also it's much smaller when you see it, & feels well made & fits in your hand comfortably.
I've also got a PSP & a DS, but this is the one I use most.
Yes there one more thing...there's been some really scathing brand biased reviews from the press about this device which are totally
unjust, inaccurate & untrue, that borders on propaganda.
So take a look at least at this:
http://www.bonusstage.com/art2985.html
Indeed benz i fear you may actually be right. Worse still the next model (the widescreen) will have even more features eg a better 2mp camera.
I guess the gizmondo's sucess will really depend on how 'hungry' the world is for gps. At present the gizmondo is way way cheaper than any other gps gadget so this may well be how the gizmondo will survive - as a gps thing. That said games like 'colors' (out soon) which use the gps abilities might well start a revolution in gaming and so kick start the real meaning of 'portable gaming' which as it stands with the DS and PSP - doesn't exist!
Hey everyone. I'm a Sales Rep of a Gizmondo Store in the US. I have read every single thing you guys have said, and some of the critizm is warrented.
Firstly, I will be the first person to agree that the current game line-up isn't the best. But if memory serves me, the only reason I would have bought the PSP was for Lumines, and the DS for Super Mario 64x4. They have thier good line-up game(note: singular grammar usage), and the Gizmondo has Trailblazer. True, not that much is lined-up for the future, but its still possible that Tiger is pulling a Nintendo with information.
Secondly, the whole issue with the heads if done and over with. It does have the possiblity to be horrible of the system, but it has the possiblilty that its the best thing that could happen. It will just tke time.
Thirdly, all of the features are present on the Gizmondo w/o extra purchises i.e. you can use the messeging and the GPS and all that jazz out of the box. Its true that the e-mail is not finished yet, and the GPS system is not fully set-up, but did the DS come with Wireless Online play when it released?
Lastly, I have my own Gizmondo, and it doesn't have sqiggily lines as buttons. It has the play, stop, rewind, and ff buttons. It helps non-techies figure out how to play thier damn music. Yes, the shoulder buttons are a tad uncomfortable, but for me , it works well. However, it doesn't work for my friend who has big hands. That is the problem. It doesn't fit everybody, and hopefully, they will fix that with the WS release.
Look, I'm not tell you that its the greatest thing gaming has got since Mario. Hell, I admit it has its downs. BUT SO DOES EVERYTHING ELSE. Yes, your comments are valid (well, a few at least), but give the thing a chance, cause thats all it needs. My suggestion is to go on Gizmondo.com and find a store and at least try it out before throwing hate everywhere. This is no N-Gage. This is not the Zodiac. This is the Gizmondo, and it has the possibilty to make the handheld war a three-way. And where there is competition, innovation and inspiration exist.
P.S.: On a more personal note, wtf is with sweat shop talk?
I playtested one of these devices recently and thought it VERY cool. One of the better devices I have seen for packers. With GPS, games, camera, mp3, and more, I couldn't ask for much more in a single unit to take up to the mountains with me. Also, for my kids, the GPS tracking "leash" is a great feature as well. So, before trashing the device, actually check it out.
Is it just me, or does it look like a hughe metal block with dents in it. :|
i guess youve never seen one then.. go see one its smaller than the ds or psp.

i'll let the psp lovers bitch now as they normally do when the gizmondo gets a nod in the news. :D
this is probably why they fasly claimed that they tracked a criminal the other day! this explains alot!
nah they can do that with gizmondos as they have to go through the gizmondo system for gps, im guessing it works like cell phone blocking and tracking

You mean ex-managing director. He resigned from Tiger Telematics 2 days ago http://sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1065581/000126967805000205/tiger8k102005.txt :

It still looks disgusting.
