Axcess G-1000 WiFi phone
Look, we all know that stand-alone WiFi phones are going to be forever doomed to niche status — anyone who wants to
make VoIP calls over WiFi that badly will probably just scoop up one of the growing number of WiFi-enabled cellphones
that are available — but damn, can we give the new Axcess G-1000 props for being one of the few WiFi phones out there
that doesn't look like a cruddy late-Nineties Nokia? Anyway, apart from looking like a generic Samsung flip
phone this one's a SIP-enabled device that's compatible with both 802.11b and 802.11g networks and has a 1.9-inch, 160
x 128 LCD display, optional voice recorder, and built-in email software.

you don't have to pay anything for "voip service". if you like, you can set up your own sip registrar. all a voip service provider needs to do for you, is keep track of your phone's current ip address, so that when someone calls you, the invite request can make its way to your sip phone.
there are _tons_ of free voip "service providers", like freeworlddialup (fwd), gizmoproject.com, iptel.org, etc.
most of these services will optionally sell you "minutes" to use to gateway to the pstn (traditional telephone network). with my provider i can make calls anywhere in the us for 2 cents per minute, and very low rates to other countries. if i barely use it to call out, i pay very little. certainly nothing compared to what i'd pay for pstn/mobile phone service. and calls in are free because i can get a free phone number that links to my sip address through ipkall.com.
the point is to eventually phase out traditional telephones, and then everyone will just use sip over the net. then you won't _need_ to pay to gateway to the old network. in fact "enum" is a standard for having a sip address tied to a "phone number", so that if i have a sip phone and dial what appears to be your telephone number (which really just routes to your sip address) my phone will look it up and see that sip address, and route the call totally over the net, bypassing the pstn and making the call free.
because so many people have wi-fi routers, this phone can be very useful, especially if you travel a lot, or live in a city like san francisco with tons of open connections.
