Ask HDBeat: what HDTV should our CEO get?

Jason Calacanis

Time for another "help out a reader" feature so give us a hand, won't you? See, our fearless leader, Jason Calacanis, is deep in thought pondering what HDTV would best suit certain needs within a $3k to $5k range.

Jason is the co-founder and CEO of Weblogs, Inc. Network; the entity that brings you HD Beat and so many other great blogs. In light of that, I say we all pitch in and help him out!

Here are the basic requirements:

  • Good set for sports (especially the Knicks!) and fast action

  • Excellent and easy integration with a Windows Media Center PC

  • Great for movies

  • Display of a DIRECTV HD signal

  • Flat screen preferred over rear-projection

My thought is after the jump, but won't you "jump in" with your comments? Perhaps you could tell all of your friends "I just recommended an HDTV to the CEO of WIN!"

Although Jason is looking for a flat display, i.e.; likely a flat panel, I'm going to recommend a concession on that requirement and suggest he consider the Sony SXRD KDS-R60XBR1 at a list price of $4,999. Too bad we missed the $1k advertising foul-up a few weeks ago, when this set was had for $3,999 for some lucky HD Beat readers.

Jason won't be hanging this set on a wall, but every other requirement is met or exceeded. Sony's version of LCoS is getting stunning reviews and having drooled over it at a retail store, I can see why. The 1080p display is as smooth as silk for fast action and has every input imaginable. If you missed our review of the set's smaller 50-inch sibling, we have one here and we also have a great reader review here. If that's not enough, this set just received an awesome review from CNET yesterday. CNET wisely pointed out that the guts of this set are the same as the no-longer available Qualia 006 that was priced over $13,000!

So what would you recommend?
