EMI promises DRM compatibility with iPod, Apple disagrees

iTunes Music Store

We're really thinking that EMI and Apple need to get together more often, because CNET is reporting that EMI now is saying that their DRMed CDs, which are currently Windows only, will soon function with Apple's iTunes and iPod players. They state that "Apple is nearly finished with the technical work necessary to enable consumers to transfer music from content-protected discs to their iPods," which would suggest Apple knows a thing or two about this. However Apple, as opposed to their mute reaction to EMI's statement about price hikes for the iTunes music store, flat out denies the DRM interoperability, and states that they "have no idea why EMI made this statement." It seems that EMI is trying to distance themselves from the Sony fiasco, stating that their CD DRM, built by Macrovision does not install hidden files, and that the usage rules for their claimed forthcoming iTunes compatible CDs are similar to the ones used by the iTunes Music Store. Consumer rights aside, this is sure fun to watch.
