Newsflash: flat screen prices dropping

Money and graph

MSNBC

is reporting today what we've known all year: flat panel prices continue to drop. Although this is common knowledge to you folks that read HD Beat, I am glad to see that MSM is reinforcing the price drops; there's still a large perception that a flat set will set you back five figures.

This quote from the article is really the most telling: "About 6 million flat-panel TVs worth $7 billion wholesale are expected to be shipped to U.S. dealers this year, up from 2.7 million units valued at $4 billion last year. Next year factories are expected to ship 10 million flat screens worth $10 billion, according to the Consumer Electronics Association."

If you do some quick math, you can see that the quantity of units sold this year increased by roughly 120%. The total sales revenue on those units in 2005 only increases 75%, so clearly the unit prices are falling, and falling fast. For any new readers that think you need to drop big bucks on an HD set (flat or tube, actually), check out some of our recent buyers guides. You can get some good deals for under $1,000 and there are some flat screens at, or just above, that figure.
