It was a beautiful few hours there, but David Krane,
Google's Director of Corporate Communications, is putting the smackdown on that rumor from the LA Times that they're
working on a
Google PC. He says
that they're happy working with their current PC partners and that they "see no need to enter this market."

Damn, guess I'll have to put my credit card back in my wallet now.
TheWakeUpCall @ Jan 4th 2006 12:32PM
I was starting to look forward to that, it would be brilliant.
andrew @ Jan 4th 2006 12:35PM
that would've been cool. too bad it was a rumor.
gt @ Jan 4th 2006 12:37PM
engadget, just like the rest of the media saying the 12 miners were alive...let's get more fact than rumor
brandon @ Jan 4th 2006 12:47PM
It would be a hard market to break into even with the power and momentum of Google.
Osam @ Jan 4th 2006 12:49PM
Of ocurse they would got into PC hardware. What is the point. Its a low margin business. Their $400 share price is not derieved from expectations of entering THAT type of business!
XGM @ Jan 4th 2006 12:49PM
The only good pc is a homebuilt one. I dont relly need to see some other crap pc appearing in any of the chain stores like Wal Mart or Best Buy. And anyways my FX-57 owns pretty much everything.

Bill Clinton: "I did not have sex with that woman"
David Krane: "No Google PC" ...
Jen @ Jan 4th 2006 12:51PM
I never expected them to make a pc. This really isn't much a surprise.
GeoNeil @ Jan 4th 2006 1:01PM
You know, it may be a complete coincidence and may have nothing to do with anything but...

In British notation... that's April Fool's Day! Maybe today (Jan 4th) could be an alternative "Fool's Day"...
...with Google Talk and adding the Google Sidebar to Windows Google Desktop Search at least, the Big G seem to be sticking their fingers in a lot of pies. I don't think Google would be eternally ruling out a GoogleOS, perhaps their still working on their own OS, perhaps their still waiting for Linux to become usable(!) or maybe their just working on making web-apps that work with ALL existing and as much as possible, future OS...
...either way, Google is a gigantic international corporation that I trust (for the moment) to not do (too many) bad things...
...and I'd love to have a usable, supported OS that doesn't cost /$199 to buy legally!
Mandarin @ Jan 4th 2006 1:01PM
Who cares about your pc? I assume you talk about yourself in the 3rd person all the time eh?
DJ @ Jan 4th 2006 1:07PM
That's right they are not going to be releasing their own PC because there is no need. They will be incorporating there OS into Tivo. Think about it Tivo's retail for $199 and they run on Linux.
Expect to see os.google.com go up on Friday after the keynote. You can download it and have Tivo functionality for your DVR for PC or Linux.
This will allow you to search google video and download them to your Tivo.
JAFBC @ Jan 4th 2006 1:16PM
well remember they are "happy working with their current PC partners" that doesn't mean they won't start providing an OS to their "current PC partners" They just won't be building the Box.

Hmmmm.... Steve Jobs said no iPod Video, and look where we are now.....

"4. engadget, just like the rest of the media saying the 12 miners were alive...let's get more fact than rumor"
That's being a little ingenious comparing Engadget to news organizations, don't you think GT. We visit this site specifically to get a first hand scoop on the latest gadget, technology, etc., based on rumors, inuendo (sp?) and hearsay with the full acknowledgement that they might prove to be completely false.
We have completely different expectation from news organizations.

Interesting Move.... Wonder how this will turn out
jeremy @ Jan 4th 2006 3:37PM
Engadget based their Google PC weblog on the LA Times article, we should be blaming the LA Times
