Video: OS X 10.4.3 dual-booted on a Thinkpad

By now a lot of us have seen videos of Apple OS X running on PCs, but we got ahold of this latest video of 10.4.3 running on a Thinkpad -- and it's running damned fast if you ask us. The video drivers still aren't up to snuff and neither is the wireless (no big surprise on either), but we have a feeling that when the official x86 10.4.4 build hits the streets next month there's gonna be a huge surge of development and adaption going on.

Hey garageband nor ilife will work for me on my computer it does not install saying that there where errors while installing but i managed to install garage band and it says that it is not soupported on this hardware and i have an 86 system

Downloading now. I imagine this is running on a TP at 1024x768 with a GMA 900 or something like that. I was thinking about getting a Macintel this year so I could dual boot, but if MacOS X continues to run acceptably on non-Apple hardware, wouldn't need to make that sacrifice to get cross-platform support :)

Guys, this is old stuff. 10.4.3 has been running on PCs for nearly 2 months. ATI drivers in 10.4.3 are decent enough, much better than running in VESA in 10.4.1. 10.4.3 runs very well on my NC6000 1.7 Dothan.

4: He could have rebooted, since he has to access the MBR to switch the OS (it's a current thinkpad so it doesn't support hardware virtualization). However, hibernate lets you go through that process faster than shutting down and rebooting.

Nothing new here, ive been doing this on my r52 for a few months now. No wireless, ethernet, or full video hardware accel, but still good to see OSX on my thinkpad.

Whoopee. This has been going on for many months now. I was easily able to dual boot when the first dev kits came out on my thinkpad. osx86 project even has TONS of writeups on it. I honestly won't be excited til I can get 10.4.4 and wireless working. Then we can talk.

Nothing new. The 10.4.3 builds still support BIOS. 10.4.4 and anything newer won't.

I see 2 (eventually 3) ashamed children in the corner of the classroom:

- Microsoft, for inflicting such a bloated software on most PCs in recent history;

- IBM, burdened by the proof of the lower grade CPUs they have been promoting;

- (and eventually Apple for selling during 2 years the G5 as "the best processor on the planet"... or something like that)



I honestly don't know if OSX will be cracked and on every PC on the planet in 6 months time, but it's by far the best experience i've had, so if it's a way to convince more people, so be it... I could not care less about the CPU... put an AMD if you must.

Yeah it is more of a novelty right now. Mainly due to the lack of driver support. If I can get 1920x1200 on my machine, I would consider it, but from what I've read the video driver support is sketchy at the moment.

when i first got os x to run on my pc last summer i was suprised but ive been able to dual boot by installing with vmware and puting the image on a real harddrive but my video card aint doing it for os x and the sound i cant get to workd but it starts up faster and moves faster after i start by using x86|ppc whatever i forget what it was cuz i automated it in a startup file but other than that os x is just another linux kin os on our boxes





prepare for failure apple they think theyll get more of us with there intel machines and os's but im an athlon man and where just going to bootleg thier operating systems



oh and i dont have os x installed on my athlon 64 3200

its on my 2.2ghz cely with a gig of ram

i got OSX 10.4.3 running on my Fujitsu T70M,

guess i got the smallest Mac.alike around, just 10'6...

(could make the upgrade to 10.4.4 if i wanted to)



and as it comes with an integrated intel graphic card, i managed to get full 1280 resolution AND Quartz Extreme active...just a few files to tweak some weeks ago.



no wireless without a USBdongle but well, other than that evrything is functionnal, and it does get pretty fast...only on a Pentium M 753ULV but with a gig of RAM.



it boots just as fast as the XP, and the mac side just needs some more software optimisation on the few apps still asking to much (garage band works like a charm but adding some real time special effects is just too much for now, just to many layers of emulation for these Mac binaries...)



you all, just grab the iso and an empty partition and give it a try, for your science, it really is worth it and the first boot is just thrilling to witness, that little on-screen apple next to your Windows and Intel stickers...

#22: It is a bit pokey, but he could be running 1-1.5GB RAM. I don't know if the Macs have a hibernate function, but I doubt it could physically be that much faster (standby is another story).

For those that think it's lame...that's funny. OS X is largely a "BSD derivitive". BSD is largely PC based. So I don't see anything lame about it, I'm just surprised it took so long. :)

Cracking bit of marketing by Apple. Push out a new system that looks loads better than Wintel kit and allow people to install Windows on it if they want instead of OSX. Oh wait a minute doesn't that mean people will be able to install OSX on their Wintel boxes......shucks, we didn't think about that. That means suddenly EVERYONE can see how much better OSX is than Windows.



Giving in to the x86 platform is better without looking stupid. Sheer marketing swing brilliance.

I've got both OSes dualbooting on my MIPI as well. It's a Celeron 1.7GHz running on an Intel I think 845 chipset(?)



Runs very nicely so far. I just did it for proof-of-concept, however. The only version of MacOS that this actually works with is the MacIntel 10.4.3 developer version. The 10.4.4 dev version only supports EFI, not PC Bios, so no updates or anything. Doesn't matter to me, I just did it to see if it would work. My res. is at 1024x768, but I haven't tried to play with it. I plan to only run the pc in 1024x768 mode as I am running it through an 8" LCD touchscreen that doesn't support any resolutions higher than that and still look good.



The Darwine project is currently working on WINE for the x86 version of MacOS. If that can work well, then there is no need to dual-boot. MacOSx86 running WINE will run windows apps w/o having to install Windows and partition the HDD, etc.



BTW, if you are planning on doing this dual-boot yourself, I would highly reccomend the Acronis Disk Director Suite. Single license is $50, and it does a lot (think Partition Magic on steriods I guess), but it's "OS Selector" app is VERY sweet. Much more elegant than Grub, a hell of a lot easier to setup & use than grub as well. Of course, it's not free... and you need to have windows as one of your bootable partitions (though you can install it on a bootable Win FW HDD, and run OS Selector on that and it will still automatically install and configure the boot manager for you so you have it even when the Windows FW HDD is gone). No, I don't work for them, I just borrowed a copy from a coworker for this project and I really like it. If I get a MacBook and I decide to dual-boot, then I'll grab a copy for myself.

iLife'06 & iWork'06 won't run on the 10.4.3 for x86. Just tried them on my ThinkPad T41 with OS X.



It boots really fast, will run Office & photoshop with Rosetta emulation (after running some patches) but no core image or Quartz Extreme.



BTW, for some reason I get kernel panics frequently. Does anyone running Tiger on their ThinkPad have this problem?

Nothing new. I've been reliably running OS 10.4.3 for Intel on a tiny Averatec AV1050 10" 3.5 lbs $1000 sub-notebook for a couple months now...



There are some missing features - the built-in SD/MMC/MS card reader, PC-Card slot, 56k modem, and FireWire port are not working (yet), and sleep is not supported (yet).



But everything else is working fine, including audio, video (with Quartz Extreme), USB 2.0, wired Ethernet, AirPort (after I replaced the Intel MiniPCI wireless card with a Broadcom one), Bluetooth (which I hacked myself - see http://hackaday.com/entry/1234000727064588/ ), CD burning, and DVD playback!



Unfortunately, I didn't document the process, but I gathered most of the information from http://www.osx86project.org - I did upgrade the memory from 512 MB to 1GB as well.

I also have an OS X 10.4.3 running on Dell Inspiron 6000. Everything is working smoothly so far, except that I have to use DLink USB Wifi for wireless internet. The most amazing thing is I can now have 1680x1050, compared to previously 1280x1024 on 10.4.1.

I can't see what the "damned fast" is all about - OS X on that laptop runs no faster than it does on the current "sluggish" G5 Powerbooks. What was noticibly faster, though, was the bootup time. (and yeah, I'm a Mac user for years, I know how slow OS X runs and boots - the Thinkpad on the video made no difference to anything except the bootup :)



Then again, Apples new Intel-Macbook uses a 1.67/1.83ghz DUAL CORE processor with 667mhz FSB - If you think the video was "damned fast" you should see the Macbook in action...

#38 iLife06 does infact run on 10.4.3 for x86 for some people, see posts over at osx86project.
