XLink Kai to create online PSP gaming network?
So apparently Xbox-scene's got a
connection close to XLink Kai -- the group behind the Xbox network-tunneling software that enables online gameplay
outside Xbox Live -- who's laid claim that the group is hard at work on a system to do the very same with the PSP.
That is, it sounds like XLink Kai may be out to enable a complete "pirate" online PSP gaming network -- then
again, they may not be. Still, the thought of online gameplay anytime, anywhere on the PSP by way of hacked firmware
running XLink Kai's game network software is more than enough to pique our interest.[Via PSP Fanboy]

Sony should just buy these guys out and use their technology instead of creating one.
You'd think Sony would be smart enough to make some sort of online network for the PSP. Oh wait, they don't even have one for the PS2. Oh wait, none of their games are really worth playing online.
lol even though the ds pwns the psp i still love that pic
I doubt it would be a "pirate network". More likely it will just be a tunneling program which is totally legit.
Wow whoever wrote this article knows nothing about Xlink and hasnt read the Xbox-scene article. Xlink already supports PSP and it has nothing to do with pirated games (although you can use backups as well as originals). Also there is no software that needs to be run on the PSP so 1.5 firmware isnt needed. There is a program that runs on your computer but thats it.
Also the article that this one mentions on Xbox-scene says: "I thought it'd be interesting to mention we got some leaked information from sources close to the people behind the XLink Kai tunneling software claiming that they are about to announce a new commercial PSP online gaming network - possibly as soon as Q2 this year."
Hence this isnt some pirate gaming network its talking about making a COMMERCIAL (aka costing money probably as opposed to free) service for PSP online gaming leaving the current incarnation of xlink-kai for psp intact and in development.
Here's the link for anyone who cares to actually read the real article. http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEFZuZEpVlVorcPNDN.php
I love you Engadget but Jesus RTFA before you post especially if you are posting what another site said about another site!
Also just another little piece of info: Xlink supports many other consoles besides Xbox that was just how it started afaik (it may have supported other consoles at launch). Everyone should check out www.team-xlink.co.uk if you want to know more.
BTW I'm not affiliated with them I've just used Xlink with my PSP and Xbox.
I'm just happy to see that someone is seeing the big picture of all of us coming togeather no matter what system we own to shank, shoot and kill each other with.
It's also good to see that other company's are on the come up and are gonna be able to rape sony(cause of their drm's) micro$oft(cause they pretty much controll developement on all major p.c's) and nintendo(ummm: because of that stupid controller)
Yes agreed, this is incredibly old news, from about this time, LAST YEAR. You can already play your PSP online via XlinkKai or xbconnect.com when only the Japanese PSP was available, all you needed then was a USB wireless card or a laptop with one. Please check those sources!
xbconnect.com already has done it, quite a while ago everyone knows KAI isn't in the front for tunneling software...
I think when the author wrote "pirate" network he meant unauthorized and unofficial, kind of like a pirate radio station. I'm fairly certain he doesn't mean a network to pirate games on.
cool
i would love to play hot shots online
Does anyone actually use their PSP for gaming?
I have neither the PSP or DS. But from ppl I know that have them, I still don't understand how the DS "PWNS" the PSP. I constantly see all these PSP vs. DS; when really you can't even compare the both of them. In my point of view PSP is heading into more multimedia and DS is more innovation for the children.
How many kids these days need a photo viewer or movie player? None, from what I see when I pick up my nephew from school. All kids do these days is play games in different ways. Now how many adults are amazed by touch screens. None, I know I see it everywhere pretty much (PDA, Laptopscreen, cellphone).
It seems like adults are more into "what and how many" functions can fit into a toy, as kids are into "how" one can use the function of the toy.
I personally would pick the PSP, it suits my needs more. Also, from what I read Cnet.com and Time Magazine ranked the PSP the Best gadget and innovation of the Year; that got my attention.
No 9. - Why are 251 people playing with their PSP right now on Kai, and hundreds more in the other console areas if Kai "isn't the front for tunnelling software". No other team has come close to the effort devoted to trying new things and expanding beyond the borders of the United States, one thing XBConnect will, IMHO, never accomplish. If only I could comment on Engadget from XBMC, like I can use Kai.
I've been playing PSP games over Xlink Kai for nearly a year already. It was adopted as an unofficial standard by the Wipeout: Pure playing community as soon as that game was launched.
I think you have the wrong idea. Xbox-scene and engadget are pretty much aware of what Kai does already. This sounds like a spin-off made by the now-retired original Kai developers - a pay service which somehow gives a richer / easier ride (Kai with PSP isn't exactly easy convenient).
If they could kick off with some UI on the PSP, even browser based and "backward compatible" tunnelling for existing games, then build a good userbase they could get game developers to include the engine component in the games themselves, so no other software would be required..
If it's true, I think it's a great idea - coz Sony aint lookin like they're gonna be heading that way anytime soon, and its a pain in the ass for game devs to provision their own servers for each game and a pain in the ass for users to signup for each individual game etc..
IMHO, I hope this is real - if it's cheap enough (something like $20/yr), I'd probably give it a go..
LL
Awww ... the DS is lookin' lonely in that pic.
The Sony PSP is so yesterday.
Gizmondo is here now and ready for you.

Wow the PSP screen is soo much bigger than the DS in that pic! Which one is thicker?
xbconnect.com already has done it, quite a while ago everyone knows KAI isn't in the front for tunneling software...
NO! everyone knows that the XLink team is no1 within the tunnel community.
Also, the expanding american borders thing....i dont recall Kai being american, its European, or if you want to be really picky...British.
