XBMC is all you need.
Yes, with XBMC you can do much more than what you can do with the Xbox 360
Man it would look so much better with a skin. There are so many places to get way sweet ones. I like Leftskins.com you can get them totally customized.
check it out.
Four initials...X.B.M.C.
Xbox Media Center is the only reason I had my Xbox modded. This media center beats M$oft's Media Center handsdown due to it's constant updates for all new codecs and file types, plus lets not forget the python scripting, weather forecasts, streaming radio...the list goes on.
just go to www.teamxecuter.com :) get an X3 and yeah XBMC is great
i need to figure out what chip to get.. go with X3?
XBMC is my first choice!
XBMC all the way! Wish I could put that on my 360. Well, someday I probably will be.
Not that emulators are new, but many systems' emulators have been ported to the Xbox (thanks XPort). I've found it more enjoyable to play the old consoles on my tv with an Xbox S controller than at my computer with a keyboard.
I seccond the vote for XBMC ... one of the coolest mods ever.
Nicely said all you need is XBMC. Avalaunch wouldn't hurt, but some do prefer EvoX. And yes, I do agree, with a modded Xbox, you can do MUCH more than you will (prob) be able to with the 360. Except the HDTV.
What I have done is use my modded Xbox as a link between my Laptop and my tv. I've got the Xbox connected to Lappy VIA an ethernet cable (Laptop sees the Xbox and adds it to the list of harddrives in my computer) and from there I just drop in files I want to watch, and then load up Xbox Media Center and I'm all set! This functionality is only somewhat available with an un-modded Xbox 360, and to use it you need to have Windows Media Center Edition. With a HardDrive upgrade, a few downloaded roms and emulators (roms of games you own! Wink Wink) you can have yourself a veritable arcade in a box.
XBMC on EVOX with a 300+ GB Hard Drive. Put your DVDs into ISOs with DVD Shrink and you got yourself a DVD Jukebox

XBox Kai - play online without X-Box live, needs XBMC of course
why get a chip when you can just softmod
dur
deet da dee
get a softmod exploit like ndure and get the
very first version of mechassault not the
platinum hits thats all i got to say just
google and you shanll find what you seek
Where and how do you get xbmc?
im confident my 360 will eventually get a hack to open it up more like my xbmc machines. I have my parents hooked on using a xbmc xbox for watching their replaytv recorded content from another room, they wanted me to buy them another xbox just for that!
XBMC rules but wish the xbox was powerfull enough to stream High Def which the 360 can of course :P
But XBMC is ace for divx avi and .mov files along with playing DVDs from .iso or .img etc :P
i hollowed mine out and used the casing as a doggie bowl.
Just because they often go unnoticed, some of the coolest stuff that XBMC can do uses XBMC scripts. LaunchBrowser gives you access to Launch.com's music videos (just about any video playing currently), QuickTime Browser gives you access to Apple's movie trailers, and there are quite a few more. Don't just be happy with the scripts included with the version of XBMC you download--get some more.
On top of that XBMC now has the ETM trainer loader built in, so you can get your trainer goodness goin on.
while i am all about gadgets, im not down with coding/linux/programming at all. but even i was able to mod my xbox with a softmod installer. XBMC is awesome but dont forget about emulators. my hd is packed to the gills with nes, snes, genesis and n64 games. my xbox is basically a mario kart machine these days and thats fine with me. everyone who comes over wants to play some random game from 10 years ago and its great. except i can't seem to find out how to shoot the puck in any sega hockey game.
what is XBMC?
and how do i put it on my xbox?
does this void my warrenty?
and what do i need to put XBMC on my xbox.
Like everyone else, an Xecuter chip, and XBMC as the front end.
Other than recording TV, it's hands down the best all-in-one set top box.
Mod it without opening the case:

I stream my basement PVR to my living room X via a wireless bridge and watch my shows when I want them on the big screen. The HD cords are cheap now, so I even get the video in component form instead of RCA.
I agree, XBMC is one of the most awesome pieces of software ever written for the Xbox.
SIDE NOTE: if you like XBMC, try out the PC version of it! (not the exact same but it was designed by members of the same team and also includes TV recording!)

I've installed pplive it's a p2p tv client, and it runs a stream as the localhost so i created a *.strm file with my ip and it works flawlessly I am able to get a bunch of live streams i.e. Fox sports net and a bunch of others.

Well, Aside from XBMC. You should all get a 250gb hd for your xbox's. Media, Media, Media.
Also, you don't need a chip to mod your xbox. you can "softmod" it. It's much easier and cheaper than a mod chip.
And don't forget to set the RSS feed in your XBMC to engadget!
Do what i did - turn it into a fully functional windows media center pc.

It's a great way of gaining modding / custom pc-building skills and you end up with an excellent music box for the living room.
messed up the link for my previous post

I've been avoiding modding my Xbox, fearing that it'll somehow screw with my Xbox Live account somehow. I'd love to have an XBMC, but don't want to jeopardize my Xbox Live-ness. Is there any truth to that hunch?
yeah, it is highly likely you will be banned from live if you alter your xbox's hardware in anyway
I picked up a ReadyNAS (http://www.infrant.com) to store all my [ahemm] multimedia... Combined with XBMC, I can download on my PC and load up a terrabyte of videos, all playable from my Xbox!
as long as you dont use a burned game, start the xbox with a real copy of the game and it will bypass the softmod and you can go on xbox live sans problems. i was worried when i did it as well but it has worked the few times i have tried it so i think its all good. hard mods usually have more elegant means. as long as you have a real copy of the game you should be set. don't go on live with a burned copy is what i gleaned from all the boards.
linux is allwayse fun to install on it, turn it into an official endaget TELNET chatserver or somthing. oldskewl.
xbmc is the best, and for moding.i would go for softmod(ude2)via hotswap and midnight comander.it takes under 10 min.all thay need now is a hardwired(standalone) tv tuner
Get a chip with a switch on it so you can switch off the chip when you want to go online. Of course you do have to use a real game then. Get the X3, that will work perfect.
yeah but who gives a damn about messing up with xbox live. you can use tunnel software like xlink kai http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/?go=quickstart. and go live with even more playes or free. and you can use back ups. check out gizmodo for the blog
Show off your flicker photos with XBMC and the flicker script, PLAY DOOM (it has been ported to run on modded xbox's).
Unfortunatly the only thing the xb can't do is HD content. so no hd tv, movies, etc. You can also glue 4 xbox's together and have a lan party in a bag.
Shhhhh! Will you guys please cut this out? I have no desire to play console games but was really looking forward to picking up a couple of junked old Xboxes to turn into dirt cheap networkable media PCs when all their owners have upgraded to shiny new 360s.
You guys are pushing the 2nd hand price up :-)
#12, you are wrong. You don't need XBMC or modded XBOX to use any tunneling software but you do need a PC to run that though.

Finally!...someone shows the Xbox with the better controller..not the stupid controller s which is the only controller in the world i can't get used to. Plus it looks better and fits the Xbox better than the other one...consider that.
Well, I painted mine. It looks pretty sweet. Gold chrome and Chrome. Shortly I or someone else I know will put a link up with a guide on how to paint it with pics.
this link alows you to play xbox with other people with out useing xbox live http://www.xbconnect.com/
and you can use mods as much as you want it also plays psp games
Just wanted to mention in case people aren't aware, you can "hotswap" your xbox's HDD to perform a softmod without needing one of the games. This means you can do it 100% for free, which should appeal to some people.
This is a great thread on it:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=443489
The cheapest modchip is the DuoX3 or the Aladdin. Chips are better than softmods because they can't be un-done or corrupted by Microsoft. No need for an expensive chip like the X3, it provides no more true functionality.
XBox can be used for dozens of emulators. Preferrably MAME with hundreds (actually thousands) of coin-op arcade games at your fingertips in one emulator. N64 emulation is pretty great as well. And XBMC as everyone has noted, is just simply amazing.
I suggest you get a chip at http://www.xboxmodchip.com for a cheap price.
I think its funny;
The xbox isn't that old but...
looking at it now, it really does look like ancient technology,
something from the big and clunky from the past.
"just becuase it's black, dosen't mean it will look slimming"
Gotta agree the best $50 I ever spent was for someone to mod my xbox and load a 160gb hard drive almost to the brim with all the software available, ready to go. XBMC is also a great app, plays nearly anything, and if connected to the net, the possiblities are endless!
