Samsung, Philips show off NFC version of the X700

Samsung has been showing off a NFC (Near Field Communication)-enabled version of its X700 candybar-style mobile at 3GSM, using technology developed with Philips and Telefonica Moviles Espana to make a push into wireless transaction hardware. Even though NFC is well-established overseas in systems such as Sony Japan's FeliCa (with which the Samsung-Phillips tech is compatible), we've only seen small-scale experimentation stateside, most notably from Mastercard/Motorola and Cingular/Nokia. As is usually the case with our shameful techlag, we're expecting widespread US adoption of NFC right around the time everyone else moves on to some sort of thought-wave-based payment system.
