Video iPod fakery exposed on video
Not surprisingly at all (except to us, who said "this does look a bit promising" when we first saw it), the
purported video iPod picture
that has been circulating for the last few days has turned out to be a complete and total hoax. We say this with such
certainty because the individual who 'shopped up the little wonder has thoughtfully released a video documenting how
the entire project was pulled off. Aside from being a great mini-Photoshop tutorial, the video makes it clear that this
"video iPod" is nothing more than a 5G 'pod photographed twice at 180 degree rotations and touched up a bit
for color uniformity. On a similar note, we've gotten word that the creator of the infamous "iPod boombox" mockup
will reveal his methods and considerable skills in a three-hour "making of" documentary hosted by Sam
Waterston and Ryan Seacrest.

UPDATE: A few commenters have pointed out that there are some interesting discrepancies between the video and the image it is supposedly exposing as a fake. Could the video exposing the fake itself be fake? Is someone out there hoaxing the hoax? This is all getting way too meta...

AHAHAHA!!! I love how much speculation the picture developed when it first came out. Everyone was sure it was legit. There was close to 200 posts on the thing.
hahahaha
I knew there was something odd about having a touchscreen. You would get fingerprints all over it.
cant wait to see the making of the boombox
this person set that up like it was nothing...looks like it took him like 10 minutes and it gets the whole web going crazy over it. Makes me want to learn photoshop.
Wait a minute...
The original picture has a "7" in handwriting on the bar code at the bottom right hand-side of the iPod. The picture at the end of the video photoshop tutorial does not. interesting. nobody else noticed that? also, it could also just be someone copying and pasting different elements of the original image into their mockup to make it look exactly the same as the original. a bit far fetched, i know... we'll see. 1 day...
No way! REALLY?
When was the last time one of these rumors or leaks was right?
The new news is going to end up being very stupid
Actually Lee, the 5G iPod was leaked the morning of its announcement.
To be be fair to the guy, he done a decent job.
#5 is right if you see the video the bardcode does not have the handwrittend number "7" as the first "leaked" picture has and I also notice the lighting is not right on the video compare to the first "leaked" picture.
As expected. As I have said before, the picture was too unrefined to be an apple. You notice that the edges of the width are slimmer than the edges of the lenght right? Thats what gave it away. Apple would have made all the edges uniform at least.
http://www.macshrine.com/2006/02/26/total-confusion-is-the-video-fake/
also, if you look real close, at one point it does look like the touch-wheel was shopped in, and the plastic it is sitting on is somewhat suspect. the folds are exactly the same when they reverse the pod for the second picture, which seems unlikely. come to think of it, why is reversing the pod even necessary in this procedure?
whatever, though. we can wait it out for another day.
This guy should win the engadget nano wwjd contest.
Open your eyes everyone, some one finally leaked a real apple product well before release and this is apple working magic and covering it up with this in house video. Jobs had this created to debunk the photo.
He he he. But I guess Apple will have the last laugh in the end anyway :-)
Every year someone pulls of a great (or not so great, as the case may be) pre-Jobsnote hoax. Remember last year's iHome? By this point it's all part of the fun.
i am happy to say that I have seen something before engadget has for once.
#11 good show! only steve would do something like that! now if we could only get a comparison shot of the hand in the video and of Steve Jobs! :-P
Its weird how someone wastes so much to time to hoax people..... Just a thought.
@Lee Gibson "When was the last time one of these rumors or leaks was right?":
Last October, with the iPod 5G, a rumor and leak with a photo very similar to this one that turned to be real..
i knew it! THIS is the real 6G
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b371/m00n3r/iPod6G_m00n3r.jpg
the video is inconsistent. the "black censor" that was drawn in photoshop is different from the one in the photo.
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/9009/look27ou.gif
Well I'll be darned. Actually, there are pictures floating around that show that the video is a fake, and they look pretty convincing too. I guess if I've learned one thing today, it's to never, ever trust anything found on the internet. Ever.

hey, why do you guys care, you got hits from the first time you posted it, now your gonna get hits from this article. its all about hits here, not actual news. bastards.
They faked the video that was suppose to debunk the fake picture. Brilliant.
Couldn't he have just been re-doing the steps how he did it ? thus making it not just like the first image? I doubt he recorded himself making the first one.
Maybe he made the video afterwards i doubt he made the video during the creating of the original why would he but then seeing how everyone belived it went back and made a video showing how he did it this time everything wouldnt be exactly the same but very similar so that would explain the slight differences the as for the wrinkles in the background look at the clarity of the click wheel in those same images it is very obvious that the video compression could take out those details
Dont get me wrong i wouldnt mind if it was true but comon this has been debunked give it up
Actually those comparison photos are fake. The video does indeed have those wrinkles, the Chinese characters are indeed identical, and the finished markings at the lower right corner are indeed the same as those in the identical photo. Those comparison shots are intended to make the video look fake.
I think the inconsistencies can come from the possibility that the "forger" did another round just to illustrate how it's done. Looking at it now though, it funny that we missed the most obvious clue: The skew/tilt of the device is different from the left and right. The skew difference seems too drastic to be explained by camera effects, etc.
I IMed Ryan Block, he said
20:50] -: it was done as an example
20:50] -: i don't think they were claiming it was them
that's unfortunate
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Please don't let it be true! Please don't let it be true!
I have a 3G iPod and I really need to update!! When the 5G came out, I told my self "I have a good feeling the next iPod will come out around February/March, just in time for my birthday, so I'll take my chances and wait." So I waited, and then a few weeks ago there was news of a possible 6G iPod! i was soo excited! So this BETTER be a fake! Please let it be a fake!!
The guy probably did it, threw away the materials he used, saw that every1 fell for it, then did it again while filming it to show off his skills..and to put the rumor to bed
methinks this design is most practical
http://jbfacts.blogspot.com/
it only makes sense to give the "person who made the video" the prize... if he actually came up with the rumor, then he should win. if he didn't, then he should win b/c he came up with the rumor of saying it's false.
I believe that there still is some light at the end of the tunnel for those who want a 6G iPod. Did everyone forget about those photos with the iPod and playing "King Kong" on it? I know whose were computer graphics, but they looked very much Apple-esque. Were those just created by "some guy" as this video/pic seems to be, or were they received from a pretty-legit source?
the guys probably from germany-if you look at the vid. all his files/photoshop tools are in german (or some other language which isn't english)
+
http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/5454/picture78ui.png = false
The scribble in the original picture is the same as the 1 in the vid.--the german guy was just in the middle of drawing it when spacehog371 or whoever took the pic
If u go to http://www.redr.wordpress.com , and see the last post.. this is my 6G ipod.. in my desk!!

Thanks for making iLLW!L relevant to teh intarnets!
Having created images 1 and 3; I feel so special to be brought up to a new level of obscurity!
Well its also seems the person that made the video is Dutch. If you pause the video at 00:50 sec, the button labeled "juridische info" translates to "legal info" in Dutch. Also his thumb shows that he may be in his mid 20s, early 30s and is male of course. Thats what Ive collected so far. Hope I find more info on this person.-Mike R
this fooled me 2
What kind of a knob spends 3 hours on a fake mock up? I'm guessing he's probably a virgin too - get a life.
Im keeping low expectations. I bet Steve Jobs reads these posts and laughs his ass off.
Anyway, I did a search on "lcd color test" and I didnt find that image.
I also hope its a fake. I want one
These comments are just as funny as what happened - now we have a hoax of a hoax! This is awesome! What will be next? I'm just going to wait for steve to wip whatever it is out of his arse from now on. But don't stop the rumors - they keep getting better and better.
#32 - The top left of the scribble is different, it doesn't matter if it wasn't finished when the screenshot was taken, it is definitely different.
"Anyway, I did a search on "lcd color test" and I didnt find that image."
He wasn't using google.com, he was using google.(crazy dutch url ending).
When he types in LCD Color Test in google, he is obviously using the dutch version of google (.nl instead of .com , but when he's at the site where he got the picture from in safari, in the bar at the top it says google.com, not google.nl Strange....
Also, I can't seem to find that picture he used to get the lcd color test on google.
While it is obvious this can be done in photoshop... it is also just as easy to recreate it in photoshop. Whos to say this isn't someone faking the real thing.
Anyways if you compare the two in all the details you will find there are slight differences. The images showing the differences from the video to the original fake DO show true differences.
however yeah it could have just be redone after... but if that was the case why is SO much attention made to make it identical to the original, i would assume if i was redoing this thing there would be obvious differences rather than the ever so slightest differences. Also why if so much attention was to make the video as identical to the original why was the 7 left out?!!!!!! Thats the most odd thing, why was the 7 left out.
Here's my version of it. Only it's black.
http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/1672/ipodfake3en.png
can anyone say massive viral marketing ad via Apple? i mean really, its simply a conspiracy theory. Steve has bested us again!
Come on guys.. you complain about the guy being a loser for spending 3 hours doing a fake, and you spent how much here debating? Losers...
I don't know if this means anything, but the comment posted at the end of the video came from the user "motulist" at macrumors.com
here's the post:

here's the thread:

Additional inconsistancy...if you look at the japansese chars during the live shot of him taping the label to the port, you'll see that it is different than the chars on the "purported picture".
The video was HOW it was made, not WHEN it was made.
I think I'm going to cry...
Jesus! I swear the whole world is Photoshopophobic anymore. You can't show someone a picture of anything without someone saying it's a fake or "it wuz chopped man!"
Regardless of everything else its apparent that the person who wrote the tag isnt chinese, the outside character that is present in both symbols is shown on a computer differently than it is written. How it is written in the photo copies how you would see it on a computer screen. If someone who knew chinese had written this note the outside character would look more like a 3 with a line going right from the bottom, not like a vertical line with two lines going right and left at the bottom.
Not much else to say that hasn't already been said. The scribble wasn't complete when he changed camera shots, the 7 could have been added later, the video itself might've been made later or by someone else. And I think the video matches the picture. no matter what, the 6G iPod is not coming out on tuesday but will look similar to what we've seen here, in my estimation (but closer to the Kong iPod mockup I think).
did somebody say meta?
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/8623/picture59ih.png
Why wouldnt apple produce that video to curb speculation? Its what I would do if dealing with a real leaked photo from manufacturing.
The video is indeed a hoax. It is a hoax of a hoaxed picture. Plus, that's the ugliest Chinese writing ever in the very first video iPod picture. In addition, since iPods are designed in the United States, it makes absolutely no sense for those words to appear there. Also, that's simplified Chinese, so unless this was written by a 5 year old commie from Red China (does Apple have a design studio there run by kids?), this both the video and the original pic are absolutely hoaxes.
WERE IS THE "7" ON THE VIDEO'S STICKER??? I THOUGHT THAT WAS A "B" ON THE STICKER, NOT AN "8" LIKE IN THE VIDEO??? SOMEONE PLEASE VERIFY!!!!
ANY OTHER STUFF???
Please, here is an image of me playing the fake video on my REAL ipod video pre-release.
whoops, didn't put the link.

hahah.don't u just love photoshop.. it fools even the expert. it's a shame though...and here i thought a video ipod would come that soon, i guess we just have to wait till tuesday if the touchscreeen video ipod is indeed real or not..:D
hi, i'm a troll. spam me please: kamilmytnik@gmail.com
Amazing.
Reminds me of when I tried to launch an Xbox 360 hoax last May, although mine started off as a 3D render that I then photoshopped to heck to try and make it look "imperfect." My biggest failing was timing--I set it loose in the wild about two days before the real one hit Engadget!
The squigly line the person drew is nothing like the one he actually pulled down to finished up the video. Looks like he Photoshopped the Photoshop of the Photoshop. This is way too much.
Oh yeah, "rose" did you get your skills from the video?
There's an old saying in Tennessee -- I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee -- that says, fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again." - G.W. Bush, iPod User
Anyone look into the Google screen shot. The video scans over the Google Logo with the hockey puck shooting through the 'O'. I'm not sure what days google had that logo on, but was it on or before the day the image was released?
If the google logo came out after the image came out, then the video must be fake... or the video is of the author recreating it, which explains the slight differences.
The actual video is obviously not the creation of the original images. Why else does it go from video to snapshots of photos? Also, the inaccuracies raised are correct. The squiggle in the corner is not the same from video to photo, the characters are different, etc. What people think is the same is when it flashes to the photos. While it may be, as some of you have said, a tutorial of sorts showing how the fake was made (not the actual "making of" so to speak), it could also be a hypothetical tutorial, showing how it COULD have been made. So really, this video could indeed mean nothing, and the original images could be legit. So I guess nothing is really cleared up with the release of the video.
@mLo
If you click on the google logo it shows all the olympic themed logos they've had the past couple weeks or so. The hockey one is the one prior to todays, so I guess that makes it yesterday's, right?
Man, you're all idiots!
Any maggot knows Steve is going to show off the Apple iPodminiBookTabletPhoneBoomfreshBox! Sheesh you morons!
Those who speculate, are fucktarded.
Did "Rocketboom" hint at the next Apple 16:9 video device (iPod)?
http://www.digg.com/apple/Did_Rocketboom_hint_at_the_next_Apple_16:9_video_device_(iPod)_
ne1 hus chinese would noe the characters are written like a POS, next time, don't try to bring us chinese into the fake ass equation
Got inside scoop, sorry folks, no ipod video planned for 2006. iphone, mini ipod and apple ipod boombox only... yes, mini ipod are coming back, small as the nano, all metal, and diff colors.
@33
DAMN everyone thinks that's german but it's dutch!
and yes those are 2 completely different countries...
Was the guy who did this looking for a job, or got paid for it. Because if not, its a little sad and a lot pathetic.
There are a couple things that bother me about the video:
1. The "lcd color test" image does not show up on Google Images despite the name of the image being "lcd-color-test-1.png" in the video.
2. You can still see light hitting the sides of the little well the screen resides in. That's extremely hard to fake and doesn't show up until he does his magical filters. And the lumeniscence even seems to bleed out from under the color test layer.
3. The purple and some of the greys have textures. I'm pretty sure real lcd tests use solid colors.
I'm with Tim on this one: This is a tutorial video showing how it COULD have been done. The picture could in fact be legitimate (I hope so, but the video certainly seems to show that it's at least possible the picture is a fake.)
I think it's fake cos the Chinese characters on the connecter do not make any sense. and one of characters is wrong. "边" as you can see only one dot at left-top corner.
I dont understand what all the debate is about, it is clear the guy made the video after doing the original photoshop to show us how it was done so there will be some differences. And as for the posts that 'steve will be reading this and laughing...' or 'steve made this video to throw people off...' ect get some perspective!!! steve has better things to do with his time than firstly wade through engadget forums and secondly actually make a video to throw a couple of thousand (maybe hundred thousand - i dont know) readers off. Who cares if a few hundred thousand people with nothing better to do know whether its a fake or not?!? It's all about perspective, apple has better things to do with their time than debunk every rumor or throw people off real photos that were leaked. And in talking about the photo it is obviously a fake as it was too similar in style to the 5G leak to be coincidental (the chinese writing, stickers ect) Well thats what i think anyway. I guess it is fun to read what people have to say anyway gives us something to do!
No, this is not a conspiracy to hide. This shown in the video is the exact same that was featured everywhere:
http://tinyurl.com/jkj33
(3 frame gif placing the engadget pix and a screenshot from the video Christian released)
High quality vid: http://web.mac.com/christianwedlock/iWeb/Christian/fake.mov
wat was that thing he did in photoshop when he dragged the black part of the screen acroos. What tool is that? is that jsut a resize of the layer he made from that part?
I think Apple made this video to throw people off.
It looks too professional and it features alot of Apple software like a stealth commercial.
I think the gif posted above is pretty interesting. Between the pics from the video and the ones posted on Engadget, the 8 in the serial number/barcode thing clearly turns into a B. The leaked (supposedly) pic shows a B and the video shows an 8, which matches up to an actual apple product
Forget the iPod Video, here is what Apple is really going to relase tomorrow. Remember you heard it from me first!!
The new "iPod Boombox" is not what you think. Instead it will be wireless satellite speakers based on Airport Express. Each speaker will sell for $100 and have an integrated WiFi point so they will only need to plug into the wall outlet. Each speaker will have full stereo, so you do not need to buy them in pairs unless you want to. An added accessory will be the long-awaited WiFi dock for the iPod so the speakers can recieve input from the iPod or iTunes. Remember the low-key addition in iTunes 6.03 of the ability to stream to multiple speakers simultaneously? The new Universal dock will be updated to support a remote that is not infared so you can control it from anywhere in the house. Another addition will be a small dock-connected WiFi transmitter for the iPod itself (so you don't have to use the Dock), in which case the iPod will function as the transmitter and remote in one unit. Oh, and did I mention that each speaker will be approximately the SIZE of the current Airport Express? They will work with Bose to get great sound from a very portable design that everyone will want. These speakers will also double as a WiFi point for your computer.
Leave it to Apple to Think Different!
SirROM
you'll notice that the Google logo in the video is the Hockey in Torino one. That was only the second Torino logo used by google, pretty early in the games. It might mean the video was made at the time of the creation of the picture, or very close to it. When exactly did this video surface?
G4 Attack of the show just admitted to making this video and showed evidence that they did .
haha engadget u got punked by AOTS i am watching the show right now
well its oficial. its a fake done attack of the show. they even showed a behind the sceen how they did it. that one put a smile on my face
G4TV's Attack of the Show today (Feb 27) showed a video of them putting together the fake video iPod movie (the video of the making of the video). They also said the movie itself was fake. So this leaves it open as to whether the original image is fake or not.
hahahahaha the videos a fake attack of the show made it hahahahahahahaha
Check this out...
Go to

you get a forbidden 403 error saying you do not have permission to this site.
Now go to

You recieve an Looking for something at Apple.com? error message.
Hmmm Apple, what are your up to?
Man... enough with the hoaxes, just get the freaking thing released!
But yes... I love how everyone was commenting on how the images was fake/real before.
hmmmm....two more things to note bout this video "exposing" the photo's "fakery"...when this person does have the "lcd color test" image in illustrator, you see that the image with the test at bottom has the color scheme that is on our pic that's been "exposed." but when this person copys it into the ipod, it has a white bar where a red(or magenta, not sure) bar is(on both the 6g ipod pic and the source of the test image) that he has to change. also, this person shows the source of all of his images that he peices together, except the bar code sticker, which as has been pointed out several times to not have the handwritten 7. isnt it odd that he drags the barcode in from nowhere?
Guess its true.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7653/1331/1600/video%20iPod%20copy.jpg
So, what's with that degenerate version of Screen Savers -- aka Attack of the Show -- posting their video suggesting THEY faked the fake video?
http://www.g4tv.com/attackoftheshow/index.html
John
It was all a hoax by AOTS folks.
Have you guys checked out www.attackoftheshow.com on it. They said they did it and all that. Could that be the trooth?
ok, THE VIDEO IS A HOAX!!!!! I know nobody will see this post because its at the very end, but this video utilizes the 5G ipod VIDEO! In case no body remembers, the image came out the day the 5G video was released, BEFORE THE PRESS EVENT! Now, unless it's someone inside apple that made this (which it probably wasnt) the video is 100% fake. Someone's covering something up...
