So,
what would Steve Jobs do?
We asked last week, and we took your answers in the form of over three hundred and fifty photoshopped mockups. We had a
couple of Newtons, a ton of tablets, and a huge swarm of video iPods -- and a ton of miscellaneous stuff that both
amused and bemused us during the hours we spent judging. While it's always hard hard to pick winners in these things,
we thought first place took it with a bullet -- but one entry was so good, we had to give out a second place prize for
the laugh.
Thanks to everyone who entered, even if your entries aren't in the gallery (click on to check it
out), and remember to check back tomorrow to find out what Jobs actually did.

Nice... the first place entry is pretty tight
These are great!
Sweet, I got first post. Yippie!
apple should hire some of these guys!
I like the iWrist and especially the iPhone. That iPhone looks like it could make one hell of a device. Too bad it's all make believe.
lol. lol. lol. lol. lol.
Man, the "What the Hell?" categorie is hilarious!
I LOVED the iPod shuffle video when I saw it on the comments thread.
That's my favorite entry.
I really like the iWrist. Props to all.
Wow, I would pretty much buy everything if it was real
oh man, some of those ideas are really interesting. i really like the tablets and the phones
oh good lord... how could that iPhone not win?
i'm not much of a cellphone guy (have one obviously, but don't drool over new products)... however, that phone i'd buy 3 of the day it came out. SOOOO COOL!
iPod Shuffle Video, ROFL...
the winning entry is so slick, I would buy that in a second.
#4 I agree with you. They really should!
My favourite picks...Nick C's iPhone & Gabriel gamXploiter.
Damn - Engadget's got some really talented and clever readers! Very impressive stuff - thank you! :)
These are awesome.
Mac & Cheese...yum!
How come the gamXploiter which was just a rip off of my iGame get on there and not mine! This SUCKS!
I thought first place was awesome as well but is it supposed to be touch screen? If not, how is the mouse cursor interfaced?
Still, first place has a very cool form-factor!
can someone please explain to me what the heck is so great about the iPod shuffle video? it obviously doesnt play video because it doesnt have a screen!
Awesome pictures! Those would be so cool to own.
iPod Shuffle Video gave me a good laugh the first time, and Mac & Cheese did it for me this time. Good job guys.
how do you play the ipod shuffle video? where's the linkie?
thanks
Mac & Cheese. I'll take 2.
#19: Haha.
i think i'm in love with the winner
i gotta say, that iphone is tight. im partial to windows mobile but id switch for a phone that slick. the always mentioned problem is that a phone with a hard drive would be a disaster and solid state memory isnt up to the task of being a hardcore mp3 player. but nano-like memory and a phone shouldn't be that hard right?
Has no-one seen the problem with the winning entry, that it cant flip the screen around to be able to write on it... Hence, not much use as a tablet? Props for photoshoppage though.
I'm french and i (try) to read this site allways, this news is the great, iPod Yocto !!!!
Very good.
Christophe
I love the winner, and the second place is hilarious!!!!
Although the iTablet was great. I think the next thing apple would do is to release phone/laptop/tablet/ ipod kind of thing, we have seen apple already working with a phone developer (motorola), Carrier (cingular) and if everything is true a version of itunes for wm5 is flying around europe, and this is just tasting the waters, the next san francisco announcement would be dope IMO.
Wow, great job to all who submitted. If they really do release something like the 1st entry or any of the other tablets I'm in. I've never been fond of Apple's stuff (I'm anti-iPod) but I've been looking for a small clamshell device to browse the web around my house.
icube shuffle, i like it, i really like it
think about it!
of course it needs ports so i dont know how that would work into the equation.
Favorite was the "What the hell" and I'd pay money for the speaker-TV.
Wow! There was some awesome stuff here, really creative. I like Jonas's MacBook the best, it should be very close to what I think Apple will introduce when they replace the iBook. Great job to all artists!
Loved the iWedge
iRobot???
C'mon that's totally unbelievable.
Apple would never support Plays For Sure
Congrats to the winner, and everyone who got in the gallery. They were all really well done. I hope Engadget does another one of these soon. I really learned a lot about Photoshop while working on my entry.
Oh I get the ipod video shuffle...geez, im such a dumbass...
...crawls in hole...
I think that I would actually consider buying an apple pocket pc. Jobs should take these ideas seriously.
geez, all of these people are way too talented for us to be inundated with crappy advertising. companies should look to this kind of design to appeal to the public. hell id hire pretty much all of them to design for me if i owned a design company and had a bajillion dollars to throw around. much props to all.
Is the iWrist being modelled by a centaur? What's with the hairy torso?
I thought, everything are real. I'm ready to order.
Seriously Steve should not mess with success.
At this point, Apple should be careful and NOT introduce any cool device as proposed here. It is safer to introduce:
1. Color iPods (yum!) The people want their Nanos in pink and blue.
2. Downloadable mini games on iTunes, $2.99 each. The games library should support ALL of the iPod family. Keep the loyal family happy.
LOL wow some of those are awesome. like the phone one. good job guys.
I should have entered my little mock up of how I'd change the Shuffle.
http://flickr.com/photos/mondochrome/93889011/
I didn't even think about it! Doh!
There was some great work submitted. :)
These things are all amazing. Apple should strongly consider coming to Engadget to get some ideas.
Someone needs to explain to me why the ipod shuffle video got second place...
#17: W.T.F is wrong with you?!
I haven't seen your "iGame" O_o
Mine was ispired by the Sidekick II and the PPC6700. Its not a "gaming" deice. Fool.
P.S. here's the my entry (full size):
http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/632/final2ds.jpg
1: Get Apple fans to speculate on what products Apple will come out with at whatever upcoming event
2: Design a similar device or hire one of the photoshopers of such a device
3: Advertise it through viral campaigns
4: PROFIT!!!!
Some of these were freakin amazing... I'm heading to the patent office right now! =)
It's obvious (well, to me at least) how the winner made his photoshop. He just took his iPod and shrinked an iBook's keyboard to fit on it. Then he took an iBooks screen rounded the edges, and added a screenshot of Mac OS X (pre-Tiger, because there is no Spotlight search icon in the top right corner) and bam! You got the MacBook tablet. Simple, yet elegant.
im serious... i really dont get the iPod shuffle video
it doesnt even have controls!!!
"im serious... i really dont get the iPod shuffle video
it doesnt even have controls!!!"
That is the joke! How dense are you? You are taking it much too seriously, it was meant to be a joke. People have always pissed since it doesn't have a screen, so the joke is to make a Shuffle Video without a screen, obviously making it useless. Duh!
the last few were hilarious! awesome stuff.
Thanks a lot for all the great feedback guys. Some good competition from the other entries. So.. is Apple hiring? =)
Wow, these are really great pieces. mine was crap compared to this. love the yocto and boxedlunch Pro.
#36 damn funny.
that's dissapointing. there were much better entries than that piece of crap. all they did was take the controls off and make it wider. i could do that in MS Paint!!!! >:o and it wasn't really funny because there are many people who are smart enough to realize that the shuffle is ideal for some people because it is affordable and has just the right amount of controls to work perfect.
Sour grapes? Maybe. But I feel like mine should have been in the What the Hell category.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a286/unicornparade/ikitchensink.jpg
I would sure love to see some of those drawings become real.
Kurt
That is crazy cool!
I agree with Collin Ruffenach. The winning entry is completely unoriginal and impractical and the runner-up is just a stretched iPod shuffle with the controls removed. Not only doesn't it demonstrate any great Photoshop skill, but it's a bad idea. There were several better entries than those (which I believe include mine).
I'm not even upset that I didn't win, because I've come to realize, at least when it comes to judging Photoshop contests, Engadget has no credibility.
iWrist and ultran mighty mouse are my two favorites.
I would buy both of those in a heart beat.
What I find funny about *all* of these things, is that the Apple I know wouldn't make *any* of them :)
The worse I think is the phone...have any of you ever read anything Jobs has had to say about what's wrong with phone on the market now? They do too much, they take away from *actually calling and talking to people* with over-complicated feature-itis UIs.
The pads/tablets? People *type* faster than they write.
Etc. All of these things lack the simplicity of Apple products :)
*11 ports* on the mini? C'mon :)
The design that won? What apps are you going to run on that thing? Screen too small...etc.
Apple doesn't make things that don't solve problems in a simple, elegant way...so good luck with all of these ;)
-K
iWedge. exactly.
Brilliant, everyone!
These are great! I love the funny ones, but also those with some practical use would be great! (Aka not the cheese G5.)
iPod Video Shuffle is stolen from G4...
iPhone slider is hot. Needs A2DP and a touch screen with a 60GB hdd. Frontrow would be nice, too, of course. And the full iTunes install with .99 dls from iTMS direct to the device over EVDO. Can you hear me now? ^_^
ha... some of these are cool, but you guys should have laid off the slogans. they're super cheese.
The iPod Shuffle Video and OiPPC are pure genius.
My kingdom for nick c's iphone!
#50 - You're a dick.
steve jobs must be at home right now looking at all these rumor pictures and getting off knowing that none of them are on the money. but at the same time looking for any good idea's
I really like the iCube shuffle, it just draws me in somehow...
Wow, what you guys created is way better than anything Jobs will announce.
Half the freaking entries are either wide scren iBooks or tablets and they all look the freakin same!
Your right Subrosian, when it comes to photoshop contests Engadget does have no credibility.
Props to all!
Helluva nice job and some one please call Bono on that OiPPC
Wow- that is so cool how the touchscreen of that macbook tablet actually breaks away from the keyboard and then reconnects itself during its transformation!
;)
1st place deserves it, beautiful.
Those are pretty amazing. Most of those entries I would buy. Especially the icube shuffle. But the phones look groovy.
mac and cheese for me please!!!
LOOOOOOOOL.
The first place looks reallly really really really really really really really cool.
what is apple taking over google now? I have apple content on my site but if i click on a google ad for a different product it takes me to teh apple site....
weird as ahell
http://jbfacts.blogspot.com
click on any google ad and watch the fun. Amazing isnt it????
The iPod shuffle video got the second place because shuffle has no screen but it has been named as iPod shuffle "video".
Sweet - I think the "What the hell?" category suits my entry quite well. I was in a pretty stupid mood that day.
All of these are so great!
Even the silly ones!
So, is Engadget giving a prize to whoever is closest to being right?
Wow, hats off to all you creative types - these are incredible.
These are all just great,...fantastic work by everyone,....very cool to see eveyone getting inspired with fun concepts,...hope we see these from apple soon,...
iCan'tWait for my iPad,.....and wish I had an iHDTV that just worked,...
Hoping a MacMini with HDMI comes out soon,....
Ok, some of you have overlooked maybe the real talent in some of these designs. Anyone can configure others logos and products to make their own, but real skill comes from those who make their own design based on the products that could be sold now. I mean look, has anyone really studied that mouse that Andrew ghy made. Amazing, if I was Working for apple he would be the first one id hire. His invention was realistic and stylish. Props to the mouse maker, hes got a bright future ahead of him. Really though, all these are amazing. I wish I was as good as they are in photoshop!
Wow !!! I loved all of the designs. Simply amazing. Nice going guys.
I so want the iWrist, I would never get a watch again.
I would buy the first place entry for any amount. Then I would become incredibly depressed when it got scratched to all hell, just like my 5G ipod. :|
I would so buy the MacBook Tablet with Wacom screen!!!!
Also 79, I think that was the joke.
i think the iwrist is what Jobs Should have done.
Now THESE are mac inventionS! hahaha
Man, these are pretty awesome concepts. I bet these guys should be on Stevie J's team! iTablet, iPhone should be seriously considered by Steve, that'll make him laugh all the way to the iBank(?)
! iGiveUp was very funny, kudos to all the guys.
One of the best posts ever on the site!
Unreal 3 on a mac? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
soundboy64, really loved your MacBook DSP. Very neat...
Surprisingly, I never thought of the idea (and haven't seen it featured on any site yet), nonetheless three submissions (that I know of).
Though, the DSP is the best - looks and sounds like an Apple Ad.
oh, and btw: the iPhone? Come on guys, the iPod Talk is so much cooler. That's what an Apple Phone should look like. Very slick design.
Although I assume it's a pain in the ass to (jog)dial a number...
