Palm Treo 700w Updater for AKU2 / MSFP on the web
We hit you guys up
a couple weeks ago with the news that Palm was going to be releasing the AKU2 update for Windows Mobile 5.0
for the Treo 700w in short time. Well, hope you got all your biz backed up, because it's time to get it on! The
35MB Palm Treo 700w Updater 1.10 is up over on their site, but caveat emptor: Palm advises you absolutely do not
restore from Sprite Backup backups if you've backed up your registry. We can imagine why, so we suggest you heed their
advice if you're the WinMo registry hacking type.
[Thanks, Andrew]
Update: Looks like Palm pulled the update already! We don't know why, but it'll supposedly "be available at a later date." Anyone want to leave some links to hosts? We'll be happy to put 'em up on here. Thanks, Alexander. Astute reader Curt points out that you can still go through the download rigmarole by following the Google-cached download link. Reader beware, though, we can only imagine what bugs in the update(r) caused Palm to pull it.

Interesting. I don't own a 700w... but there's a phone number there which belongs to a Joe or Jim, couldn't tell. I would have expected Palm to use a non-working phone number on their image.
I think the whole AUK2 update thing is confusing. My understanding is that AUK2 is a specific update that includes things like A2DP support as well as some other enhancements. What I see on the palm site is the MSFP update (push email) along with some other non-AUK2 related updates. Is this AUK2 or just MSFP+?
Like I said, I'm confused (I have an i-mate SP5 and I'm still trying to figure out if I can use the Motor wireless stereo headphones with it (I have them on order :)).
It's prolly a direct sales number...
Just applied the patch and I can see several bugs fixed.
1. Didn't need to use my backup, everything was kept intact
2. NumKey is set by default for login passwords
3. There is a new Wireless Settings menu for Bluetooth and phone
Will tell more once I find more... :)
And sadly, no A2DP for us. Damn you Verizon, why did you have to pull that?????
is this something everyone should do, im not quite clear on the benefits
Don't feel bad the 6700 doesn't have A2DP too
it actually doesnt disconnect from the EVDO connection after you send/receive mail.. this is great especially if you have more than one account like me. i would used to have to reconnect everytime i wanted to switch between my three accounts.
hopefully this release will make the phone a bit more stable. i have to soft reset my treo about once every other day (at least) which is extremely annoying
A2DP is not a standard of the AKU2.0 update. It's planned in a future AKU but there are test versions of firmware for different HTC products that do indeed include A2DP. Direct Push is enabled on the new T700w AKU2.0/MSFP update which is the main reason why you would update. The security features also work so if you activate remote wipe from the Exchange server, it will definitely work. Just be sure to install the EAS mobile administration web tool to enable the security features.
This is a big deal for Treo users. MSFP allows direct push -- no need to chew up bandwidth checking for updates at a set interval. Basically what blackberry has been doing all this time, sending SMS message telling the mobile device when you have a new message.
just installed this update. flippin awesome. on one instance, the email came in on my phone before i got the notification on my desktop in outlook 2003. like others have stated, hopefully this resolves some of the stability issues, but we will see over time.
this was especially nice since for some reason our exchange server (w/sp2) never worked with AUTD. it would never even attempt to send the SMS message. this worked without me having to even touch the server. sweet.
> blackberry has been doing all this time, sending SMS
>message telling the mobile device
MS says it's actually a long-lived HTTP connection, so your phone is just sitting around not doing much, the server sends some data down, or possibly the entire message (I'm haven't looked into it) and your phone tells you.
Nice!
Offtopic Man:
MSFP Direct Push does NOT use SMS to keep the device up to date, and neither does BlackBerry.
The old MS AUTD used SMS and never worked all that well.
I also just completed my update on my Treo. It went flawlessly and I did not lose any data. After going in ActiveSync and selecting "As items arrive" for both peak and off-hours, I was set for Direct Push (my company is already setup with Exchange 2003 with SP2).
Remember to reactivate your phone as instructed on the palm site using *228 and option 1. I did an initial manual sync in Outlook, and then waited. Emails started trickling in as they arrived, neat!
I then tested it with a friend who sent me a test email. Within 10 seconds of the "Send" button being pushed in his desktop Outlook, the little swirly ActiveSync arrows kicked in and the mail was being downloaded. I noticed the handshake is lighter than a full ActiveSync sync, but still longer than a BlackBerry. In all, I had the email on my Treo within 30 seconds of it being sent.
Although a few minutes later I received another e-mail on my desktop Outlook and the phone did not sync it, somehow. This is bad. Before I knew my phone would check every 10 minutes so I either waited or forced a sync if I expected anything urgent. But now, i do not want to just randomly check in case Direct Push missed something. I'll observe over the next few days to see if this was just a fluke or if this is a common occurence. As Microsoft MVP on mobility, you can bet I'll let Microsoft know loud and clear if this is the case.
I'll keep posting my experiences with Direct Push and the Treo on my blog. Check it to see updates.
Well.. I am an Exchange Admin and have just updated a brand new 700w with the AKU 2.0 update. (Which btw..seems to have been pulled from the Palm website.. Hmmmm....)
It appears to work flawlessly... I also admin our Blackberry BES server... and I can say there is maybe 1-3 seconds difference between arrivals on the two devices (BB getting delivered first). The only time I noticed no mail flowing was when I somehow turned off the phone wireless...
I have not yet tested the wipe feature added with the web admin tool on Exchange.. but will soon.
Also.. I was previously using an XV6700 (Audiovox) and must say this is much more stable and useable out of the box. Though I do miss the built in Wi-Fi on the 6700..
Oh..I did have a problem with the updater.. it would not run correctly from the setup.exe file... kept erroring out with "could not find Palm Treo 700x.msi" file of some such... I finally ran the update using the .msi itself and all was fine...
So far it looks VERY good... and all in all on par with Blackberry IMO.
Now if Palm will just RErelease the updater ;)
My experience applying this patch is not nearly as uneventful as everyone else's. The first thing I noticed was that mutch of my phone's data was wiped out - despite carefully heeding the warnings of the installation instructions.
After getting everything hooked back up, including the connection to my company's Exchange server, I'm now only able to synch email up via the phone's Active Sync function.. For some reason, I'm not able to update email from within Outlook Email. In Outlook Email, I used to be able to click on Menu, then Send/Recieve...now I cannot. It's there, but greyed out. I know my connection to Exchange is set up properly because I am successfully synching via ActiveSync. Anyone getting this problem?
Also - before I applied this patch, I had hooked up the SMS version of email push. It was pretty cool...until I heard that I was being charged for every SMS message from the server to my phone letting it know I had a new message it had to pick up. Is this new patch a different method of picking up email? If so, when I set it to sync "As Items Arrive", it asks me for my phone number..just like it did before. Anyone know anything about all this?
Seems like the updater is down. What gives? This has to be the most useless message ever, too:
"Temporarily unavailable. We anticipate that the Treo 700w updater will be available at a later date. If you have already installed the updater, please disregard this message."
It's unavailable, but they anticipate it will be available, at a later date? What the heck?
Sounds like Palm got anxious and pulled the updater already, makes you wonder what's wrong with the updater doesn't it?
You can still download it by doing a Google search for www.palm.com/700wUpdate . Click on the "Google Cache" link. Scroll halfway down the page and click on the Download link. It takes you through the rest of the download process.
use at your own risk
funny, i put in my serial number and the download link wouln't work, so i used the one on the demo screenshot above and it downloaded perfectly. i think ill keep the number.
My experience was similar to Tim Jameson's post. I didn't have any of the install troubles, but when I went to have it sync "as items arrive" I am still prompted to put in my sms number. I did NOT use this method before. Seems the only way a "realtime" sync is done is if I go the SMS route. Anyone else running into this and if so, any workaround or fix?
A BIG OL HEARTY THANK YOU FOR POSTING YOUR SERIAL NUMBER!!! i needed it to download the picsel viewer from palm for my 6700... THANks again
