Final PlayStation 3 dev kit has arrived
Although the first PlayStation3 dev kits were nothing short of gigantic (similar to those PSP dev kits), it looks like Sony has released a "final" version -- one which doesn't exhale winds kin to a tropical storm and whine like a jet engine -- that's been tracked down and posterized. As expected, the juicy details here are few and far between, but at first glance it does seem to sport the obligatory optical Blu-ray drive, and on-hand reports stated that an alpha build of Full Auto 2 was among the data housed on the 80GB hard drive. Initial reactions were relatively positive, garnering praise for its sleek menus and "lag-free" play while connected to the PlayStation Network. The lucky few who wound up handling the not-yet-finalized controller dug the lightweight feel (thanks to the omission of a rumble feature), and noted that switching from wired to wireless modes was much snappier than the versions at (the final) E3. Unfortunately, no new information was leaked about titles in development, and no substantial secrets were unearthed, but hopefully that'll change pretty soon once these start making the rounds.

That thing looks like a CD player, Circa 1986.
Looks better than the normal PS3 case, i'd rather have one that looked iike this
3 months til release and they are now sending out final dev kits, which still looks bigger than a PS3 case to me. All I've seen of the PS3 casing are the glossy Sony photos, the cases at E3, and a wooden mockup box. If this thing is out in November, shouldn't they have got them working inside an actual PS3 case by now???
H is for HUGE!
Meanwhile, the final 360 dev kit is just a standard 360 in black, with a larger hard-disk attachment on the side. And, you'll soon be able to develop on a standard 360 with just software, by subscribing to the $99/year creators club.

ajprice you are an idiot. Guess when the final 360 dev kits were sent out. September 2005 and when did the system launch november 2005. wow just under 2 months for the 360. The PS3 is in a better situation here.
you see the problem with running games on the actual ps3 is that Sony will need a mod chip to run the beta/alpha games on it which be harder on them. plus dev kits have I am alot more features (like debugging tool and crap) that come with it. it alot more then a box that plays the games I am sure. thou the dev kit looks bulky and ulgy
I dont think the developers care what the dev kit looks like aslong as its easy to make great games on.
do they use multi-tap text entry on the PS3 dashboard like on the PSP? thanks for any information.
Wow, looks almost as fugly as the ps3 itself.
would rather have a case like this though, almost passes for retro.
Anyone else getting the feeling Blu-ray is going to fail and you'll be stuck with another Umd type format/failure? (Only opinion)
x
It looks like a betamax player, i still have one in my summer house
Actually after googling the topic, the 360 dev kits came out in August, not Spet, of 2005. Thus they were also 3 months before the USA launch date of Nov 22. They were also criticised as being somewhat late.
Huge? Looks about 19" rackmount to me, which is certainly a lot more practical than the ludicrous overgrown PS2-ish-shaped PS2 devkits. Putting a full-size PS2 next to one of them looked about the same scale as putting the external harddisk (the PCMCIA-hooked-up one they released in Japan) next to the PS2 itself :p
And no-one but developers will see these. Oh, and you won't be able to own one, they always belong to Sony and you just get `loaned' it for a while for the few thousand pounds/dollars you pay them for it :)
anthony f, as has been said in other comments here, the xbox 360 was released 3 months before release, and except for the hard drive housing was in a black coloured standard xbox 360 casing, and was considered late.
The PS3 final dev kit shown is also 3 months before release, and still isnt in a PS3 case, or anything the same size as a PS3 case.
Is this what you call the PS3 being in a better position???
My point stands, I still havent seen a fully functioning PS3 in a final PS3 case.
SOny fanboys better not give 360 fanboys any lacking bout so called rushed 360 launch titles. they themselves seem will have the same problem on their system.
i dont think the 360 Devs would have been that bothers that they where out 3 months b 4 release, i think the PS3 Devs will tho.
as this is where they probobly find out if there stuff actualy works ok on the Cell.
thats what i think n e way.... im just guessing here lol
Carlos, yes it does look like a Betamax player. It looks like any antiquated piece of hardware from the 80's/early 90's.
Oh well as long as it is used to program great games, that's all that matters. Who knows if they'll actually be great though. That's the only problem. Word has it that these are harder to program than PS2 games, and as I remember, 1st gen PS2 games were really nothing special...
Now don't get me wrong, there were a couple really good games but lots of...meh's. It really goes without saying that the PS3, XBOX360, Wii, etc aren't going to shine until AT LEAST the 2nd-3rd generation of games.
Anthony F, don't call people an idiot if you don't know what you're talking about. It makes you look ignorant. Even if you DO know what you're talking about, it still makes you look like a jackass.
Josh!
sorry for the comment, I havent had my coffee yet.
Anthony x,f,q, whatever- You better hurry up and drink a swimming pool's worth. I'm glad I don't work with you, or you would have had your teeth knocked down your throat ;)
Just FYI, I used to be a developer at a game studio, the PSP dev kit is not ginormous. It is MUCH smaller than a micro ATX tower. :)
Hey i'd say that PGR3 was a damn good launch game for 360... still the best looking out there almost a year later. You could also kinda count Halo 2 as a launch game, and that straight kicks ass. Overall though, launch games are always weak because of the abuse devs recieve from the companies.
Looks like a betamax recycled.
anthony f. - the Xbox 360 final devs were released to EA in Vancouver in July last year, well before the launch date of the console.
I was salivating over them when we had one in my sku.
get your facts straight.
It does look like a Betamax player! dual drive though.

Was it the final dev or the mock up G4s?
oops meant to say G5. Epic didn't get their xbox 360 dev kits until aug. I guess EA gets dev kits earlier than anyone else?
Post up some GUI shots please.
they will probably make a slimmmer version like they did wit ps2
clem
I think IGN.com has some shots on their ps3 page. not much to look at for now.
http://www.engadget.com/2005/07/07/xbox-360-beta-development-kit/
Looks like the beta dev kits for the xbox 360 were released in july, but nothing on the final dev kits. PS3 pre-final dev kits where released some time eariler this year.
its big, but im not sure i care
also, what developer has the need for an avid adrenaline? (its sitting right beside the ps3 in one of the pictures)
I think it looks like the Commodore CDTV (which is a good thing IMHO). I am sure that developers have games nearly done and launch will go fine. I'll be saving up for a PS3, but not at launch. I'm still having fun with my original Playstation. I even entered to win one bundled with games (some 11th anniversary promotion). If I win I'll keep it in the basement for the kids.
http://www.playstationmuseum.com/PLAYSTATIONGIVEAWAY.htm
That's where I saw it.
Doesn't matter if it's a huge PS3 devkit or a black XB360.
All that matters is,
SAMSUNG FTW!!!
i wish someone would release a consumer console that looked like a piece of professional gear.
..i mean, i understand they are toys, but do they really need to look like Fisher Price made them? (360) or like they're some sort of startrek hyperdrive prop? (ps3)
I really just want a system that looks like a rack-mount piece of manly machinery, not a cutesy little toy. I want it to look like a Rotel amplifier. ...now THERE's some sick industrial design.
ajprice you are an idiot. Guess when the final 360 dev kits were sent out. September 2005 and when did the system launch november 2005. wow just under 2 months for the 360. The PS3 is in a better situation here.
Yeah, you're differently wrong on that one bud...let's see, first of all, the 360 components were already fitted inside of the actual formfactor size, where as the ps3 is still in a nice big box...that's why there hasn't been any overheating and very little noise (more room for heat to vent and fans don't have to get the heat out as quick). Secondly, read on about how it has an 80 gig hdd to stream and cache game data...last time I recall Ken Kutaragi showing his ugly face in public he stated that the $600 ps3 would only have a 60 gig hdd...developers are working with hardware that is above and beyond what consumers can purchase! How is this helping game developers create games to run well on actual consumer units?! You may want to revise (or retract) your argument before someone tears you a new one...
Slayermayer, I'm sure someone will tear you a new one right now.
First of all, the 360s do overheat. Not frequently, but it's also not an ice pack. And just because a dev kit is the same size as the final version doesn't mean that the game will run cooler. To say that a smaller dev kit makes for a cooler end user system is completely absurd, on more levels than one.
I wonder why the dev kit has an 80 gigabye hard drive.... Hm... Oh wait, IT'S A DEVELOPEMENT KIT! As in developers create games on it. The need the extra space for different builds, multiple games, and any other miscellaneous things they might need.
The 60GB hard drive on the consumer PS3 has no direct correllation to the 80GB hard drive on the dev kit.
The consumer's drive will be used for game saves and movies, music, etc. The dev kit's drive is used to store massive amounts of development data. What you should be saying is, "Why isn't the hard drive bigger?"
They can test the games on the dev kits just fine, and it'll run the same way the consumer will see it.
One more thing. Having more powerful hardware does help the developer make a better product for the consumer.
Before you make any more comments, please make sure you aren't an idiot.
I’m a bit of an AV File and PC mod master, so IS IT ME OR DOES THAT THING LOOK GREAT?! I agree with the post that says “we are sick of consoles that look like Fisher Price Toys”. That dev kit looks like it would fit nicely in a home AV system and at $600 Bones it should.
Besides, IT WILL BE GROWN FOLKS FORKING OVER THE CASH FOR THAT PUPPY and not some snot nose brat! So how can I get this case instead of the domed plastic bread box? I’m even willing to pay extra CASH? Anyone?
PS Add a clear top to that and some liquid cooling mods too? SWEETNESS!

OH, AND JUST IN CASE YOU NEED ANOTHER PS3 REMINDER. IF YOU MISS THIS HOLIDAY CYCLE YOU ARE, TO QUOTE A FAMOUS FRENCH POET, FUX’ED!
Um, Never mind. I saw the IGN pics and that thing is like two receivers in depth. Oh well ;^(...

Slayermayer, the XBox 360's dev kit hard disk has a 60GB partition for development and DVD emulation.
Let's face it, both Sony and Microsoft made life difficult for launch developers by not providing representative hardware until only a few months before launch. Both failed in that respect.
launch titles for the xbox 1.5 sucked, halo 2? they depend too much on that game, without it xbox would have disappeared.
the "360" gets hot too early, not even my notebook gets that hot, and for what i heard, the first dev kits for the xbox 1.5 were laggy.
The ps3 dev kit looks quite nice, lag free, extra storage, and user friendly (that is, if you are used to the psp), can't wait any longer for tekken and Devil May Cry.
Noshino,
Your notebook doesn't get that hot because it doesn't have a tri-core processor based off an architecture that gets notoriously hot (G5 processor). Your logic is astounding. That's like complaining that a truck equipped with a fully blown small block 350 runs hotter than the little inline four cylinder wedged under the hood of your Honda Civic. It's not an apples to apples comparison and, IMHO, your comment becomes irrelevent. Furthermore, Sony will also have its share of heat related issues with the PS3 (at least until the die processes of the GPU and CPU are shrunk), so I find that you have hardly any room to speak in regards to one of the Xbox 360's faults. You can't have powerful hardware crammed into a little box, and then complain when it runs hotter than room temperature. I don't hear hardcore PC gamers bitching that their Core 2 Duo, overclocked AM2, SLI, or Crossfire equipped gaming rigs run hotter than than 30C all the time.
Oh..and Xbox 1.5..so friggin mature. At least Microsoft doesn't have to worry about 10-20% operational yields on their CPU, with an even smaller number of that 10-20% yield having all cores fully functional. I guess the advantage CELL has disappears if 1 SPE is disabled off that bat, and 2 or more SPEs don't work in most of the chips thus produced; hopefully, as manufacturing goes into full swing, the yields will improve and fewer chips will be in someway handicapped (god forbid the occasion, but if I have to in the near future, I'd like to go through a CELL equipped MRI without having to worry about the imaging on screen going awry due to a single chip not functioning in any way, however small it may be). But, in any case, keep on drinking Sony's Crazy Ken brand Koolaid, Noshino. It'll help ease the sting of knowing that true gamers don't solely pledge allegiance to one brand or console, such as people like you. Furthermore, true gamers can appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of all consoles equally...again, something people like you can never apparently do. You've been weighed, you've been measured, and you've been found wanting. Toodles.
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention something. There are two or three grammatical errors in my post. I'm fully aware of them, so don't bother pointing them out.
Can't wait for November for all the PS2 problems to start popping up so people will remember why they should never have bought Sony again. PS1 overheated to the point of melting parts inside. PS2 overheated as well. Now we have another Sony system with all new tech that has not really been put through its paces and every Sony fan expects it to not have a single problem. Funny.
As for the dev case, I guess they had to do something with all those Betamax machines laying around from the first of their failed media experiments so they crammed the PS3 into them.
Wow lag free play over the PS Network, how many people were on when they played? Now Live may have lag at times but your talking hundred of thousands if not millions of people playing on their servers at once, not an office lan party so I wouldn't get too excited just yet. Also still wondering why they haven't release hard details on the online component yet. 3 months and counting, hope they get their sh*t together soon cause MS and Nintendo are going to be huge this christmas while PS3 supplies are about what 360's were last year. going to be a lot of disappointed kids on christmas morning, or broke parents from mortgaging the house to buy one off ebay @ $1500 a pop.
"Can't wait for November for all the PS2"
Should be PS3,
apologies
Nice on Anubis
Jeff Foster, i totally agree. i think the dev box looks many times better then the comsumer hunk of plastic they're showing. you'd think sony would understand if you're aiming at a higher end market (20-mmmm say 39 year olds), then perhaps you shouldn't just try to make another bloated piece of plastic. the devkit looks like a serious machine. you know once all of these cell processors are linked together via sonynet, they will start to think for themselves? that's what this box says. the other box says "toy." i want to play with WOPR not my kid sisters nintendo.
It's damn near idiotic to assume that there is something not right if a final devkit either doesn't match a retail unit dimensions or has a different case. Anyone who has been in development of games for any length of time can tell you that a final devkit need not necessarily match the dimensions of the retail unit *at all* or share the same case, and has not on many platforms.
serious gamer? other than halo I haven't seen any other good game for xbox, so if you don't like fps you shouldn't get an xbox 1.5, rather get a gamecube or a ps2.
I said they get hot, because THEY DO! and lets not forget the brick, o wait, I meant the transformer.
"But, in any case, keep on drinking Sony's Crazy Ken brand Koolaid, Noshino. haha
1st, please appreciate the weaknesses of the xbox 1.5, you can't say anything about the ps3 since it hasn't come out yet, so please keep your mouth shut til then.
2nd, solely pledge allegiance to one brand or console? I have a gamecube, N64, SNES, GBA, GBC, PS1, PS2, PSP, err.....I didn't know they were all from the same company.
3rd, true gamers can appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of all consoles equally...again, something people like you can never apparently do.? you are not a true gamer then
keep on drinking Sony's Crazy Ken brand Koolaid, ken has a koolaid with your name......cheers!
Noshino,
Did I say the Xbox 360 ran at room temperature? If you read my post, you will plainly see that I agree it runs hot; however, I'm not complaining about it. Also, what part of CELL being, in some part, based off of the PPC architecture do you fail to comprehend? You site MS for having a console that runs hot. Guess what? Sony's going to have the same issue. You can't turn a blind eye to a heating issue that will be just as prevalent in the PS3 and cry foul over the same issue in the Xbox 360 at the same time. Ya didn't think of that, did ya?
And again with the Xbox 1.5 crapola...If you wanna talk about console inferiority, right off the bat, let's start off with the PS3 and how its memory is split into 2 256 MB chunks (one being used by the CPU, the other being used by the GPU). If it was just one large 512 MB chunk of ram, developers could use the memory any way they decide to (something MS was fully aware of). Furthermore, the GPU in the Xbox 360 A) serves as the basis for unified architecture driver support in Windows Vista, B), was designed from scratch, and C) was tailored specifically for the console; it's not only a good GPU, it's also innovative. You know what Sony had Nvidia do? They shoved a glorified Geforce 7 series chip into their machine and called it good (one reason I hoped Sony would stay the hell away from Nvidia, if for nothing else but complacency in terms of design on Nvidia's behalf). I hate to burst your bubble, Noshino, but your $600 PS3 will be technologically outdone in 6 months time after launch; the Xbox 360 is not immune to this either, and it will also be obsolete in a very short amount of time.
Oh, and I forgot; owning multiple consoles doesn't necessarily make you a true gamer, Noshino. A man can own a Chevrolet and a Toyota, but still remain a Toyota fanboy (vice versa). There's nothing wrong with slight preferences, but flagrant fanboyism is an act of overt stupidity. Again, true gamers recognize as well as appreciate the strengths and weakness in all consoles without bias. They don't make a big deal of them, they just acknowledge them as they are, and go on. My PS2 can't read half the new games I bought for it without laser tweaking, but that didn't keep me from playing it. Your perpetual Xbox 1.5 comments show your haven't yet grasped the concept of being a true gamer. Does the Xbox 360 have issues? Yeah, and I recognized that fully from day one. Will the PS3 have just as many issues? Yes, and you'd be a blithering idiot of a fanboy if you think the first run of PS3's will be totally flawless. Even the Wii will have its own issues. Do they all have their individual strengths? Yes.
All consoles, within their first iteration, have problems of some sort (apparently, you never took that into consideration); it's either hardware related, or developers pushing out dumbed up versions of current gen games as next-gen titles. Which, I'm gonna have to bust your balls here. Did the Xbox 360's titles, for the most part, suck? The answer is largely yes. However, the blame needs to be put on developers rather than the console. It'd be like me prattling on about how Fox sucks because I didn't like the last AvP movie (they only made one mistake, and that was putting Paul Anderson at the helm). Fox didn't write the script and they didn't direct the movie; no, Paul Anderson can account for that atrocity, and wasted 90 minutes of my life. Better yet, it'd be like me saying the PS2 was really a PS1.5 because its launch titles were no where near as enjoyable as the Dreamcast's launch; it wasn't Sony's fault the developers were lazy. I suppose what I'm getting at is that all consoles are, in some small way, standing on equal footing irregardless of market penetration; they all serve their intended purpose well, are money well spent, and provide us all with near countless hours of entertainment. I have spent the same amount of time on my GC, PS2 (little bit more than the other two due to the shitty DVD rom), and Xbox. Guess what? I haven't regretted a single purchase for any of them. Furthermore, I find it amusing that the following comment is the best you can do: "you can't say anything about the ps3 since it hasn't come out yet, so please keep your mouth shut til then." Wow...I guess that means you need to shut your bloated cake hole as well, because the console you are defending right now is still a hollow plastic case.
Lastly, enough of the Halo comments. I don't like the Final Fantasy series or Metal Gear Solid series in any way, shape, or form, but you don't see me bitching about those being Sony's only trump cards; it' akin to saying, "I don't like Mario or Zelda, so there's nothing on the Wii worth playing." You don't like first person shooters? That's fine. Go buy Jade Empire, Ninja Gaiden, Mechassault, any DOA game, the Metal Gear Solid Series (obviously, excluding the first), and so forth. There are games that make any console purchase justifiable and worthy of attention; it's not my fault if your blinded by your own fanboyism not to see such titles sitting on store shelves. There are PS3 (Warhawk, & another Ace Combat game, god willing), Wii (Metroid Prime 3 & Super Smash Bros), and Xbox 360 (Gears of War, BioShock) titles I'd love to get my hands on, if only for a few moments. Keep drinking you Koolaid, I'll stick with my iced tea, thank ya :) .
Bah...damn it all to hell. Again, there are a few grammatical, spelling, and syntax errors in my post. Don't bother pointing any of them out. I have a dream that, some day, there will be an "Edit Post" feature on blogs.
1st, I haven't defend the ps3, and if i did, please show me? My comment was regarding the dev kit, I can't say anything about the ps3 til it comes out, don't worry, once the wii and the ps3 come, I'll be able to look for their weaknesses.
2nd, I said that xbox depends on halo, because it does...oh and I don't play the MGS series, and it isn't the only good series for ps2, Final Fantasy, Kindom Hearts, God Of War, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Gran Turismo, oh and it would have been awesome to see .hack/fragment come to the US.
Nintendo uses mario too much, but hey, who cares!, as long as they good games, mario tennis, wario ware, TLoZ, Super Smash, Viewtiful Joe, Double Dash, etc.
ninja gaiden, Doa, forza? IMO they weren't that good, but because they were the only good ones from xbox, they are seen as great. Show me a great games, and I ll eat my words.
3rd, "You site MS for having a console that runs hot. Guess what? Sony's going to have the same issue."
"PS3 will be technologically outdone in 6 months time after launch; the Xbox 360 is not immune to this either, and it will also be obsolete in a very short amount of time."
"Will the PS3 have just as many issues? Yes, and you'd be a blithering idiot of a fanboy if you think the first run of PS3's will be totally flawless."
"Wow...I guess that means you need to shut your bloated cake hole as well, because the console you are defending right now is still a hollow plastic case."
WoW....I guess you are also making assumptions based on a hollow plastic case.
Anyways dude, let's just get over this, you win, I'm MS hater, I like video games and I take along with me a six-pack of koolaid everywhere i go xD
