Fujitsu gets perpendicular with 160GB 2.5-incher
They promised 200GB by 2007, and it looks like we're getting 160GB in 2006. We can't quite tell if we're supposed to be disappointed by the missing gigabytes, or excited by the launch date, but with 160GB of perpendicular data spinning at 5,400 RPM you can't go far wrong. Of course, Hitachi announced a 5,400 RPM 160 gigger earlier this year, so we're not sure why Fujitsu is trying to pass off their new MHW2160BH's speed as some sort of record. Fujitsu is also dropping an 80GB MHW2080BH based on the tech, and both drives will be available in October.

Wait... I thought the point of perpendicular data was higher capacity. What's the benefit of a 160 GB perpendicular drive over a standard drive?
Wonderboy: And where have you seen a "standard" 160GB 2.5 incher?
when will I be able to implant 200GB under my skin?
followup. what would I want with 200GB of storage un my body?
I thought 160gig 2.5" drives have been out for a while now.
Hey, wouldn't a 5400 rpm perpendicular drive be quite a bit faster than the equivalent standard 5400 rpm drive? My logic going purely by the fact that they're squeezing in a whole lot more data per square inch, so if those square inches are going past at the same speed whether its a perpendicular or standard drive, the perpendicular one is going to be transfering a lot more data to the drive heads in the same amount of time. So maybe they do have a speed record, even though the rpm is the same?
ok, i'm ready for my 320GB iPod, now.
HDs would have to be the one thing that are consistently pictured/displayed with their tops off in company literature. Look inside, kids! It's a HD! Would be nice to see pics with boring metal box and sticker on top instead, for a change :)
It's more representative of the lack of excitement. :D
Already have the 160gig Seagate at 5400 RPM in this very MacBook I'm typing this comment on. And as you point out, Hitachi has them as well. So Fujitsu is third to this particular party -- and late at that, even if they hit their October date. I believe they did have a 160gig 2.5" before, by the way, but that was 12mm thick, as opposed to the standard 9.5mm.
You can be a data courier like Johnny Mnemonic.
But don't use that memory doubler, cause it'll mess you up!
