Samsung shows off 40-inch LED backlit LCD at IFA
We do love us some LED backlighting, and Samsung has the goods at IFA this year. Their new LE40M91 LCD measures a reasonable 40-inches, runs at a 720p resolution, and manages an easy to love 10,000:1 contrast ratio. The display also features 450 nits of brightness, and a 146% color gamut. Best of all are the rumors that this display could be going for a mere $3,000 when it's released, and the dual HDMI ports don't hurt none either. The display is accompanied by a pair of non-LED LCDs, but they aren't too shabby all the same. Measuring 40 and 46-inches respectively, the LE40F7 and LE46F7 manage 1080p resolutions, 6000:1 contrast ratios, 127% color gamut and 450 nits of brightness, along with all the same connectivity of their LED cousin. Since this is all going down at IFA, Samsung is just announcing these displays for European markets right now, but our hopes are definitely for eminent and wallet-friendly Stateside releases.

I'd love to see some power-consumption comparisons with conventional LCD TVs. It'll be nice when LED backlighting becomes ubiquitous with in laptops.
I wonder what stopped them from making that LCD have full 1080p like the non-led version. Maybe they figured that combined use of leds and the better panel would have put it out of the budgets of most consumers.
- 40 inch. Strike one
- 720p. Strike two
- $3,000. Strike three
Out.
booo. Ive been waiting for the new line of samsung 40" 1080p Tvs to come out so I can buy my first hdtv. It upsets me that the awsome backlit lcd version is only 720p. Im willing to spend a little more for the extra quality. The only thing stoping me from buying one right now is the brightness, which I think these leds will solve. Too bad its only 720p tho.
Heres hoping a 1080p led version is released here in Canada within the next 8 months.
I have a current gen samsung LCD, it is so bright it can actually be painful to look at areas of pure white. I imagine this will fade with age though, unlike LED backlighting. But if brightness is your worry, then you don't have to fear the current line of samsungs.
Blacks on the other hand suck.
