Nintendo's DS headset gets its glamour shots
We still haven't spotted a launch date for this thing in the States, and it looks like the Japan Nintendo DS Headset launch got bumped back a couple of weeks to September 28th, but that hasn't stopped this thing from getting plopped under a few bright lights and having some pics snapped for our viewing pleasure. Everything seems to be in order, so just keep reading and we'll let the pictures do the talking.

Very Sweet.... I might get one of these :)
Smacksmackums @ Sep 20th 2006 7:49PM
Pretty sweet. I want one.
Alex Ion @ Sep 20th 2006 5:48PM
I am not sure if they will target the date.
I think they will delay once again, and honestly I am waiting for them asap. Can't wait to play them a little ;)

Something about this reminds me of home pregnancy tests, from the box to the product shots. Otherwise, awesome!
Buckers @ Sep 20th 2006 5:59PM
Is it just me or is the connector on this similar to the old ipod connectors?
Quadrius @ Sep 21st 2006 9:12AM
It's not just you. They both use the same system, but iPod's was used for controlling music through a small controller. No idea what this one will do.
mike @ Sep 20th 2006 6:06PM
looks uncomfortable, like my official xbox and xbox 360 headsets. Plantronics all the way.
doyouflip @ Sep 20th 2006 6:10PM
Ditto Mike. I had a Plantronics set that looked exactly like that (aside from the connector).
steve @ Sep 20th 2006 6:11PM
whats with the thing at the end
looks like it will add weight
DarkFader @ Sep 20th 2006 6:32PM
That thing is a ferrite bead to prevent radio signals coming into your DS that might give interference with lets say the amplifier. You can remove it if you want.
_habit_ @ Sep 20th 2006 6:11PM
What games actually support voice chat?
And now all they have to do is get rid of the freaking friend codes deal.
dann @ Aug 3rd 2007 6:50PM
the friendcode is there to PROTECT children from nasty people.its never gonna go away because this future has to be SAFE FOR KIDZ
Ahmed El-Khuffash @ Sep 20th 2006 6:17PM
Is it me...or does it look like something out of Star Wars from the picture in the package?
James Scott @ Sep 20th 2006 6:23PM
It better not cost much because that ear peice is the Free/NextToFree headset you're GIVEN with so much stuff. Its just SLIGHTLY modified for the DS...
I have like 6 of them kicking around from various things like when I got my DSL service (pre packaged with some garbage VoIP software) or when I got a $20 cordless phone and it was tossed in with some stuff I bought at a shop - they couldnt sell them so they were giving them away with orders.
BrenX @ Sep 20th 2006 6:24PM
So... We're getting skype on the ds...right?
bloodnok @ Sep 20th 2006 6:40PM
too bad it isn't usb ...
Aaron @ Sep 20th 2006 6:58PM
Nice, but what games are actually going to support it? For example, the GameCube had a broadband modem and three different expansion slots on the bottom, but how many games used it? One. Actually, every Nintendo system has had expansion slots on the bottom, even the NES. I don't think I'd buy this until it's clear they're really going to support it...
AJ @ Sep 20th 2006 9:12PM
well they do need to have people buy and use it for the limited games at first to have a reason to keep make products that use it.
jorge @ Sep 20th 2006 7:13PM
This is exactly like the motorola ear piece that came with my radio shack house phone. I wish I could take a picture of mine and post it but I can't find my digital cam USB. It's not very comfortable and it breaks easily. I ended up using it for my xbox since it has the same connection and I guess it gets the job done.
herbkyle @ Sep 20th 2006 7:16PM
is it just me or in the last pic is the headset upside down
BurnZ @ Sep 20th 2006 10:06PM
Part of it is upside down, it just depends on what ear you have it on.
Cody Krieger @ Sep 20th 2006 7:38PM
Ah, the perfect accessory for my black DS Lite. :)
G3K @ Sep 20th 2006 7:51PM
Haven't third-party headsets been out for a while?
Bjet @ Sep 20th 2006 7:59PM
What exactky will it be usefull for?
Josh @ Sep 20th 2006 8:35PM
Hmm. Sexy. A little too much Apple for me though. Nintendo needs to stick to their own style, not go after Apples.
Superdotman @ Sep 20th 2006 11:06PM
It just looks Appley because it's white. And it's only white because if Nintendo decides to release something in an "uncool" color, purple for example, people complain that it's too kiddy. Gamecube, anyone?
Personally, I would totally buy a purple DS Lite.

Those "prongs" on the side are essential to the device working. I pet Pelican puts out an adapter within 2 months of the US launch.
Eric Purdy @ Sep 20th 2006 9:26PM
Yeah so this is cool but what games will u use it for?
Jarrod Willard @ Sep 20th 2006 11:45PM
I believe it has been stated that Pokmon Diamond and Pearl, coming out for the DS in the US next year, will support the headset.
I am guessing here.. but perhaps the headset just replaces the DS microphone speaker... If this were true, any game that uses the speaker [all of them] or microphone, could be used with the headset.
Silent @ Sep 20th 2006 10:38PM
Looks uncomfortable , the way the peice that goes behind the ear might be too small for someone with large ears, and the edges look a little sharp, although this is more what i hoped the PSP headset would look like before they released it.
Lt_Ladle @ Sep 20th 2006 11:48PM
I can't wait to see people walking around shouting at their DS... itll be worse than cell phone headsets, because ill be random commands repeated over and over until the DS gets it right... ahh i can picture it now... "POW-ER ON....POW-er on....pow-ER ON......"
AbelR @ Sep 21st 2006 1:03AM
I would get one but why lol? Nintendo needs to make more games use this.
flipper @ Sep 21st 2006 5:31AM
The only current game with voice chat is Metroid prime and that's only in the Lobby and only if you have swapped friend codes. I hope they come up with a few more that use it otherwise what's the point?
Arinya @ Sep 21st 2006 10:02AM
You can speak to your friend over your DS Lite in Star Fox as well. Dunno what other games support it. More now, hopefully.
Ds lite boy @ Jun 6th 2007 9:12PM
what about warioware touched?
Artr @ Sep 21st 2006 5:48AM
That looks nice... apart from the fact that you end up looking like a complete geek if you use it in public. (hey we're all geeks here anyway right?) I would use it once i get my DS Lite, would be fun, but doesn't the DS have a microphone already?
Leroy @ Sep 21st 2006 9:29AM
Cant wait to communicate to strangers with this death star rip off on a cummuter train
joey lang @ Sep 21st 2006 10:09PM
Havent they already been selling these.....i saw a headset for a ds at best buy the other day that im pretty shur looked exactly like this.....i think it was 15 bucks or sumtin.....are they selling another brand and are yall exited about osme special feature of this one, because i know they are selling them at a best buy in my area....if not, maybe i should pic one up and sell it on ebay....
spil @ Sep 21st 2006 11:01PM
Am I the only one who noticed the guy wearing it is wearign it on the wrong ear? Most headsets are traditionally worn on teh left ear, and you can especcially tell it is wrong because the "Nintendo DS" writing is upside down.

xboxer @ Sep 22nd 2006 12:49AM
I had a headset that looksed just like this for my cellphone at one point. For me, it was terribly uncomfortable and didn't stay on very securely. Hope this design is somehow better.
Sean DL @ Sep 27th 2006 5:20PM
So you liked Purple cubes then, Josh?
I'm kinda glad Apple borrow something from a company that knows sleek and sexy tech...and I'm not talking Fisher Price.
Ds lite boy @ Jun 6th 2007 9:07PM
sweet, but why use it if there isn't many ds games with the microphone function? now voice pictochat, that's something!
