Steampunk laptop comes complete with Morse key
We're not exactly sure how this actually works, but a creative Japanese fellow seems to have created a laptop that looks like something out of the movie "Pi." It's apparently a functioning laptop, with mechanical keys, a wooden space bar, and a stylish Morse key over the trackball. It's even got USB, Ethernet, and all the modern trimmings. Click, or tap, rather, on over to the next page to check out a closeup of that Morse key...

This is so awesome. Does it have a price?
binary_hero @ Oct 13th 2006 11:04AM
But Pi had no steampunk at all. It was set in the modern day, albeit with a pretty large supercomputer.

Much more like something out of Terry Gilliam's "Brazil where they actually had typewriter computers. Check it out for a whole lot of steam-punk fun.

More like Brazil or Naked Lunch...

Looks more like the terminals used in Max Headroom.
kyle allen @ Oct 13th 2006 11:48AM
how do you close it?

Try clicking the picture... it links to a japanese page with more pics, it gets auto-"translated" by google, but you can just make some sense of it.
To answer your question: it looks like the screen folds underneath the base. It's got speakers too. Neat huh?
I want one :)

That is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

This is awesome, I'm a big fan of steampunk. Gotta wonder how much it weighs though, I have an old cast iron typewriter that must weigh at least 30 lbs.

Does the carriage return chime a bell?

"Does the carriage return chime a bell?"
It actually does!

Best. Laptop. Ever.
Daigan @ Oct 13th 2006 2:26PM
This should be in the giveaway...

It might be safer too use than a normal laptop, as the force ergonomics of mechanical typewriters can reduce the incidence of carpal tunnel injury.
TomTheGeek @ Oct 13th 2006 1:27PM
Does anyone else feel like driving down the wrong side of the freeway when they hear the word "steampunk"??
August @ Aug 27th 2007 9:22AM
Man, you have no idea.
Colby @ Oct 17th 2006 12:25AM
Might have some problems if the battery heats up....
DIII @ Oct 13th 2006 1:50PM
That is awesome.....
Kirk Stephens @ Oct 15th 2006 1:36PM
is it possible to buy one of these things?
The Jeremy @ Oct 13th 2006 2:38PM
I like it. Reminds me of the computer keyboards from the *Max Headroom* television series. The laptop would have looked perfect inside the TARDIS Console Room for the 1996 *Doctor Who* tv movie.
imageburn13 @ Oct 13th 2006 3:33PM
Euclid?
ap @ Oct 13th 2006 4:04PM
It's not a laptop. If anyone bothered to look at the previous page, it shows mac tower in the diagram.
mrwright613 @ Oct 13th 2006 6:37PM
is anyone else kinda creeped out by this? it looks like something out of SAW
JehovaHimself @ Oct 14th 2006 12:06AM
Did anyone else catch the "Raptop Computer?" logo or is it just me with the keen eye for Engrish?.
Bryndon Blackburn @ Oct 15th 2006 10:13PM
Is anyone else reminded of the Fairly Odd Parents? No? Just me?
Sin @ Oct 17th 2006 4:30PM
Know where I can get one of these? ~_^

This is like the art concept in Pattern Recognization. What we really care about is the interface, no one, outside of a few technical fetishist, cares about what chip's inside. There is something beautiful abuot this raptop, but also somethign deeply false, since most of the mechanical articulation doesn't function according to the movement design...but still makes me hard looking at it, much like boob jobs...you know it's false, but it still turns you on.
Dave @ Oct 19th 2007 7:34AM
That wouldn't look out of place in rapture. (Bioshock)
