Eye-Fi's Eye-Film WiFi SD card now shipping in beta
Remember that SD card from Eye-Fi which was to bring us an extra 1GB of flash along with our 802.11g WiFi? Well pull-up, or even drop, a stool 'cause the Eye-Film has finally gone beta. If you're up to handing over $99 for a not yet production-ready piece of kit, then you'll receive a 512MB (1GB coming later as a free upgrade for beta testers) SD card incorporating 802.11b/g WiFi that is said to transfer JPEG photos from within your camera to either in-home PC and Macs or directly to supported on-line sites, like say, Flickr we hope. Sorry, no ability to transfer RAW or movie files yet and there won't be support for Smartphones during the Beta as Windows Mobile solutions are still being investigated. And you Treo owners can simmer down too 'cause according to Palm, "they cannot support network peripherals on this particular branch of PalmOS." Figures. The Eye-Film has been tested with a "wide range" of consumer and pro digicams (it comes with Compact Flash Type-II adapter) so the beta is open to all -- if they can't get it to work then you'll get a full refund. Hell, why not, we say.[Thanks, Caleb]

Why do I want to pay a premium to be able to send only my JPG images (no RAW or movie files) to my PC via WIFI? I have a USB cable for that. I can't believe I am actually going to say this since I hate cables but, I don't mind using my USB cable to connect to my PC in order to download my pics. Actually, my PC has a built in SD card reader which I can use to transfer as well. So, what is the big deal about this product?
Now, my opinion will change once they add support for Pocket PCs. My opinion will really change if they can shrink this to mini-SD.
Anyway, just my 2 cents.

OK... Normally I would have agreed with apeguero... yes, this is just paying a premium to move pictures to your PC... but:
It is a faster, more convinient way to do it. I own a dell desktop (connected wirelessly) with NO buit-in card reader and the crappiest access to the USB ports. I have since hacked in a 3rd party card reader, and sure, cables aren't too much of a hassle... But cables do dangle there and not everyone wants to open their camera to transfer files.
I think this will come in useful because OTHERS can also access the card's pictures. Hell, you can show off the pictures (on someone else laptop) with the camera in your pocket.

not necessarily just upload to your pc at home. Why not just walk into a starbucks while on vacation and your pictures appear on flickr. No need for carrying anything around except your camera.
I'm signed up. :)

Add pocketPC support, and I'm there. Tired of using my compactflash wifi card, would rather use this instead.

I dig this, my MOBO doesn't like USB2 drivers so its 1.0 for me through my old camera since apparently my DL usb port is fubar.

Any word on how it will connect to encrypted networks or how you'd click the "I Agree" button on so many web cafe type places? ALso how do you tell it when to send and where to send to?
