24-carat gold HP Laserjet p2015: cheaper than a PS3
No, it's not another scandalous display from Andres Serrano, this is a 24-carat gold HP Laserjet p2015. On display at the GITEX show somewhere in Japan Dubai, this working prototype is up for auction with a starting price of US$299 or about a Benjamin less than the printer costs without all that gold. Why did they choose a middling LaserJet and not an HP-35 or other HP product more worthy of such opulence? Hell, we have no idea, but we'll get some private investigators to check their phone records and get back to you. What?

This is stupid, but I'll bite....
I bet the profit on toner is greater than on the ps3 games.

How many tacos is this one worth?
Gigi @ Nov 22nd 2006 10:20AM
Sony Bashing again.. that thing is cheaper than a X360.. but we didnt hear Engadget say that.. They just seems to be taking out some sort of frustration out on Sony. And all us just follow their lead.
This is just getting boring now...
Ed @ Nov 22nd 2006 12:01PM
With the vile, anti-customer relations Sony has exhibitted in the past, we should all be always Sony-bashing.
Besides...the comment is geared towards the exceptionally high price of the PS3 when compared to a far superior Xbox 360 (leading developers have confirmed this)

PS3 is current news, XB360 isn't; what do you want?
StevO @ Nov 22nd 2006 10:49AM
lol i saw this on the voodoopc blog
they chose this printer because it's their most popular model or something
4 million laserjet sales? more than ps3 will get in quite a while, for sure.
GJP303 @ Nov 22nd 2006 3:41PM
hi i think i know you.. stephen j.?
John Branca @ Nov 22nd 2006 11:34AM
It's cheaper than the 360 as well. Typical title.
Stefan @ Nov 22nd 2006 11:54AM
But WILL IT BLEND?
P.S. Sony sucks- But, the reason they mentioned the PS3 and not the 360 is because this printer is up for auction, similar to PS3s being up for auction. You'd have realized this too, if you weren't such a mindless Sony fanboy consumer drone.
Kachow!
John Branca @ Nov 22nd 2006 12:00PM
I can see the connection. Although there are plenty of other things that are overpriced.
And there's no need to call names, unless you're the one who's insecure.
GigiAndretti @ Nov 23rd 2006 7:06AM
Of course, you also realize P.S is post script meaning it is supposed to be written after what you have to say. Anyway, saying something is getting boring doesnt make me a fan boy. Starting your post with Sony sucks does!
As for the others.. Thanks.. Ok I agree both PS3 and the Printer are current news which makes it funny enough. Somehow I just felt that we were getting all getting a one track mind with this PS3 thing. Was hoping it would stop hogging the news titles all the time! There are more things in the gadget world :)
John Branca @ Nov 22nd 2006 12:04PM
The 360 is a good value. So is the PS3. For what you get out of it. Some people don't consider the PS3 worth it. Personally I like being able to customize it, put in a bigger HDD, install an OS on it and have it become my entertainment center.
I'm sorry you don't feel the same. But both of you are acting pretty childish.
Andy Briggs @ Nov 22nd 2006 12:05PM
You fools!
Actually, going on Amazon.com prices the starting price is the same as the Xbox360 Core package and $100 less than the Premium. I'm not sure about the Amazon.com PlayStation 3 price, but I'd guess it'd be about $500-550 (Amazon.com), no?
I actually commend this article for being witty and aware of current events, and not being afraid to include these comments. If these 'Sony Fanboys' would care to study the media and efficient and effective writing, they may realise that the far greater price of the PlayStation 3 compared to this PRINTER COVERED IN GOLD is quite amusing. The Xbox360 has no difference, or is so minimal it creates no impact.
Please, before you make such comments, stay your hand, think and THEN act. These knee-jerk reactions only tend to muddy the already complex waters of intelligible (and indeed, intelligent) discussion.
John Branca @ Nov 22nd 2006 12:11PM
The Core package of the 360 isn't a good value, unless you're getting it from Amazon for 100 dollars. I don't think you've researched this well.
moory777 @ Nov 22nd 2006 12:07PM
Dude,
Gitex is in DUBAI, not Japan! I should know, I was just stuck in traffic for two hours trying to get the expo (today's the last day of the exhibition) and finally just gave up and came back home...
Ashish @ Nov 22nd 2006 12:32PM
He's absolutely right! Engadget please get your facts right!
But I only went to the CE Shopper.
Sean Hattaway @ Nov 22nd 2006 2:02PM
The printer looks impressive, but I'd rather the midas touch goes to its printing features as well... if it's all for show, then I'd rather have chocolates...lol
KCFlyer @ Nov 22nd 2006 6:25PM
HP just celebrated the manufacture of the 100,000,000th LaserJet. Unfortunately, the celebration was in Boise, Idaho. Doesn't that kind of cancel it out?
Norm @ Nov 22nd 2006 6:58PM
@ gigi: That's because the Xbox 360 wasn't just released the other day. The PS3 just came out and is fresh in the news.
Sakura @ Nov 23rd 2006 10:17AM
According to the website the starting price isn't 299 dollar but 20.000 dollar. If it were true what you guys wrote, then I used to have a 24-carat bracelet which is just a tad cheaper. Now that's bummer!
Thomas Ricker @ Nov 24th 2006 6:24AM
yeah, I saw the 20k in the translated text, however, pretty sure the card propped up next to it says starting at $299.

Great printer, but the toner cartridges is where it really gets expensive.
