What Would Malmsteen Play? Turn a guitar into a Guitar Hero controller
You know Yngwie isn't playing messing around with some plastic toy, so it's a good thing Toolmonger has an in-depth guide to turning a real guitar into a proper Guitar Hero controller. The whole project will set you back a staggering 75 hours or so, but that's a small price to pay to do some virtual shredding on a real Strat or Flying V, right?[Via waxy]

"a small price to pay to do some virtual shredding on a real Strat or Flying V"
And to illustrate the point, a picture of a fake Strat. Thanks.

Yeah, but if you do this project yourself you can use a real Strat.
Lawrence @ Dec 14th 2006 8:45PM
Technically that is a real strat...made by Squier, which is a division of Fender. honestly, who is going to tear apart a nice $700 or more fender strat when they can use a guitar that is almost from the same manufacturer and is $500-$600 less? Don't be a douchebag (if you're not sure what that means then here you go... Douchebag - An individual who has an over-inflated sense of self worth, compounded by a low level of intellegence, behaving ridiculously in front of colleagues with no sense of how moronic he appears.) and try to appear "smart"; you're being an ass. If I had the time and money (or a PS2) I would definitely consider this project.

Squire is a Japanese made Fender strat. I used to have one until my brother and his friend were smoking cigarettes in the attic and burned half the house down. I got a real Strat from the insurance company settlement. Fire insurance FTW!!!
Mikey @ Dec 14th 2006 4:59PM
yeah, but do i have to scallop the neck like yngwie?
Sean @ Dec 14th 2006 5:20PM
Wouldn't it be better to install one of those midi pickups? Then you could play the actual strings.
Dan @ Dec 14th 2006 5:30PM
If only Guitar Hero could incorporate a camera and let me high-kick exploding targets on screen like Yngwie.
paul irwin @ Dec 14th 2006 5:37PM
so you're destroying a guitar... to play virtual guitar... with a real guitar as a controller.
seems completely foolish to me.
Kaze @ Dec 14th 2006 6:22PM
My first guitar was a squire. Set me back only around 70 dollars, and was pretty decent.
Though I'd rather shred through guitar hero witha Les Paul
skikkletybibbit @ Dec 14th 2006 8:34PM
or you could always buy a strat or other real guitar and use the 75 hours to learn how to play the instrument.
Ben @ Dec 15th 2006 5:27PM
Come on that's not REALLY what a douche bag is
embee @ Dec 14th 2006 10:03PM
A Squire is a real Strat like an Epiphone is a real Gibson like a Ford is a Rolls-Royce.
And Larry, take it easy. I don't know where your "douchebag" reference comes from. I don't consider you my colleague. You seem to have problems with simple social interaction, coupled with (or caused by) a limited vocabulary. Besides, saying something to someone on the internet that you wouldn't say to someone's face in in person is pretty damn lame.
That said, a Squire is generally accepted to be of lesser value than a Fender. In fact, Mexican-made Fenders are generally accepted to be of lesser value than US made Fenders.

YNGWIE WHO? Yngwie fucking MALMSTEEN, that's who!
Fishes,
narco.

I find it inspiring that so many geeks like / know Yngwie Malmsteen. He is truly a god of guitar and more people need to hear his music.
ghostdog75 @ Dec 14th 2006 9:48PM
Whoa, a Yngwie reference. Rising Force was a pretty good album but I'd much rather be Jeff Beck or someone with tastier licks. Squier is a low end guitar so I have no problem with "destroying" it.
Dave @ Dec 15th 2006 12:18AM
A guitar without strings is like a bird without wings.
dnzperson @ Dec 15th 2006 1:38AM
LOL Lawrence - by your definition, I would say you're a douchebag.
But for the real meaning, try wikipedia. That is if your over-inflated sense of self worth, low level of intellegence and rediculous behavour don't cause you to immediately flame me.
Any way, you can buy Squire strats. (but yeah, it's just like epiphone = gibson, or calling your ipod shuffle a real ipod - I mean, c'mon guys, it doesn't even have a screen).
Don't waste your time with this project - learn to play a real one.
Nick @ Dec 15th 2006 6:21AM
I, for one, welcome our real-guitar-wielding Yngwie-beating overlords.
freenncchh @ Dec 16th 2006 1:37PM
Actually a douchebag is a shower bag. It's french
