Dell E228WFP loosed in Canada
Still no word on a US launch for the Dell E228WFP, but hey, at least our colder, more northernly neighbors will get a swipe at the 22-inch display. They'll pay up $399 Canadian (and supposedly $299 during Boxing Day, i.e. the day after Christmas); still no word on US launch. Damn, what's a country gotta do to get a 22-inch Dell up in this piece.

Don't forget kinder too. =)
Colin @ Dec 25th 2006 4:37AM
Oh really now.... First of all, it's not that cold for most of us. Why do you think we're all huddling along the US border? Only the insane actually move up north. The rest of us are holding out for Cascadia. ;)
Lokheed @ Dec 25th 2006 4:48AM
I just found out today that the US doesn't celebrate Boxing Day. They celebrate the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday). It now makes sense why that day creates the most consumer spending in the US. Funny how long I went assuming Boxing Day was a world wide event. Don't know how I got that idea in my head from the start.
I know this has nothing to do with Dell ;)
Shawn @ Dec 25th 2006 4:59AM
Wow. I didn't know that either. I thought Boxing Day was a North American thing.
adam @ Dec 25th 2006 8:48AM
Actually, the US has "The Day after Christmas Sale". Its the same thing as boxing day. It just isnt called it boxing day.
Here is something more interesting. When I moved to Canada from the US a few years ago, I was asked at the border for proof of my education to get my visa signed. I had a photo copy of the piece of paper that indicates I have a PhD in Anatomy. We call that piece of paper a diploma. The degree is the PhD. I also have a MS degree and a BS degree in Biology. In addition I have the diplomas that indicate those degrees. The border guard indicated to me that in Canada, those pieces of paper are called degrees, not diplomas. Apparently, a diploma is something you get from a trade school or something. If, the piece of paper is called a degree, then my question is what do you call the level of education indicated on the piece of paper? Is this also a degree? Seems a bit confusing to me.
Bloobie @ Dec 25th 2006 4:24PM
Actually, it's a misconception that Black Friday creates the most consumer spending or is the biggest shopping day of the year. That day is usually reserved for the Saturday before Christmas, I believe. Thanks to the procrastinators. :)

You could always buy the 22" Gateway LCD. Decently priced and they don't outsource their tech support to India. I will buy "American" whenever I can. Their 21" HD wide-screen display is amazing. I've got 2 of those sitting on my desk right now. I'm waiting for the 30" displays to upgrade.
VV @ Dec 25th 2006 7:03AM
"loosed"? What does that even mean?
IWANTTOUCHSCREEN @ Dec 25th 2006 10:12AM
I knew someone was going to freak out after seeing an appropriate usage of 'loose'.
Lokheed @ Dec 25th 2006 9:00AM
Yes. Its called a degree. We have an Associates (2 yrs), a BA (4 yrs), an MA (~6 yrs), and a Ph.D (half your life). They are all called degrees.
Basically you tell people I have a Masters Degree in Chemistry. A Ph.D is a little different as its not formally stated as a degree. So you would simply state, 'I have a Ph.D in Psychology." (Though of course you could drop the "degree from all of them.)
mitch @ Dec 25th 2006 9:01AM
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
Klintor @ Dec 25th 2006 9:55AM
@ Pete D: "THey don't outsource to India"
Tell that to my long-time gateway representative, Gindumesh.
Hostile slick inbound @ Dec 25th 2006 9:59AM
wow $299 on boxing day? I wish i knew that. I bought the Samsung 22" widescreen lcd a couple months ago for like $469.99 +tax
Oh well theres always dual monitors!
scryber @ Dec 25th 2006 11:30AM
2 things. First, thank you for not writing "dropped in Canada." Second, kudos for the correct spelling of "loosed."
As for the monitor itself, eh. 24" or 30" for me. Not sure who would want this 'tweener.
RR @ Dec 25th 2006 12:18PM
Why is that so exciting? Dell have a 24" on their site. A colleague of mine just got one for Christmas.
Tom Robinson @ Dec 25th 2006 1:21PM
I wouldn't say we "celebrate" this so called "black friday", per se... it's just the nickname given to the Friday after Thanksgiving because it's the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season and lots of stores have huge sales.
p.s. Merry Christmas!
Mr. Spell check @ Dec 25th 2006 3:04PM
"Loosed" is not a word, you idiotic Americans!
Blin @ Dec 25th 2006 3:22PM
I thought looking up definitions is the easiest thing to do on the internet. Type it into Google and it will give you the definition...
v., loosed, loos·ing, loos·es.
v.tr.
1. To let loose; release: loosed the dogs.
2. To make loose; undo: loosed his belt.
3. To cast loose; detach: hikers loosing their packs at camp.
4. To let fly; discharge: loosed an arrow.
5. To release pressure or obligation from; absolve: loosed her from the responsibility.
6. To make less strict; relax: a leader's strong authority that was loosed by easy times.
Loosed is a perfectly fine word for this instance.
Mr. Spell check @ Dec 27th 2006 5:26PM
A search on Google does not make something fact. Its like quoting the Wikipedia in academic writing
Luke @ Dec 25th 2006 3:49PM
When it's 6 degrees outside (Celcius of course), and there is no snow on the ground, I would hardly call that "colder" than much of the US.
Bet @ Dec 25th 2006 4:52PM
$299? for that big beauty? cant be right.
autocorrelation @ Dec 26th 2006 12:21AM
I can't find this on Dells Canadian site. It shows up at 399. Anyone have a link?
SamW @ Dec 26th 2006 8:55AM
I just bought one. $299 CAD works out to $260 USD. Free shipping too. Good deal. Here's the link for you. Its only a 48 hour sale.

SanW,
what kind of input connectors are on this monitor. It says on the website that there is an analog input as well. Can this be hooked up to a DVD player in any way?
rockintom99 @ Dec 26th 2006 5:19PM
Around $300 (us) dollars for a decent 22" widescreen monitor? Sign me up! My 17" is starting to get some weird ghosting things, and I'd like to go widescreen. What's the native res on this thing?
Tom Gelinas @ Dec 27th 2006 12:55AM
The eastern half of Canada is without snow...
Greg Smith @ Dec 27th 2006 3:42AM
Oh, it's right alright - bought mine this morning. With free shipping, too, which is effectively another $25 off.
jen @ Dec 27th 2006 5:34PM
can you order one and have it shipped to the US?
will it hook up just fine to a macbook?

Leo @ Dec 27th 2006 6:16PM
Is there some way I can get this to the US? Please let me know what are the possibilities...if there are any.
Hugh @ Dec 29th 2006 7:33AM
In Australia also, but cannot be added to cart (error appears saying you need to call them).

Got mine too! It'll be my first LCD migrating from a 19' CRT.
huzaifa sami @ Jan 1st 2007 10:52AM
Hey! has anyone bought this 22 inch Flat screen? if yes, is it worth buying?
topspeed @ Jan 1st 2007 10:40PM
I ordered one as well... tracking said to be delivered on jan 7. Now to take advantage of this monitor, I'll have to get a new card with DVI output. Next pay check.
Too bad it doesn't pivot but 5ms is awesome for that price. Hope there's not any "fixed" pixels.
JamesM @ Jan 3rd 2007 6:58PM
I received mine yesterday and plugged it into my EVGA Geforce 7600GT - it recognized the native resolution immediately, and I have to admit, World of Warcraft and Everquest both look amazing on it.
DV @ Jan 3rd 2007 11:22PM
Just got it today! it is a beauty~ :) played Call of Duty 2 with my 7900 and watched several dvds. It is so nice :)
Travis Brown @ Jan 4th 2007 12:51PM
I got three of these two days ago. They are pretty nice, however, I noticed their color leaves a little to be desired, as they don't display as well as my 19" monitors at work. (Gradients especially). Also, I have to send one of them back I think, as it needs to "warm up" before displaying the image properly. I was stoked that the came with both VGA and DVI cables though.
Ryan @ Jan 4th 2007 5:59PM
I ordered it on the 26th and dell said they cancelled my order becasue there is no such monitor availble in canada.
topspeed @ Jan 6th 2007 9:56AM
Well it came in! Wow. No fixed or dead pixels at all. It's a beauty. Now I'll need to get a replacement VESA stand to hook it on the wall and free-up the desk.
SamW @ Jan 7th 2007 1:41AM
I received mine. It's really nice.
Potato @ Jan 7th 2007 6:45PM
I bought one of these in Canada on Boxing Day ($299 CDN with free shipping, arrived Jan 3).
I wasn't too impressed. I have a Dell Ultrasharp 24" screen at work and it's just a great screen, both in terms of the picture and the extras that go with it (a height adjustable stand that can rotate the monitor into portrait mode; a USB and multicard reader slot).
The E228 22" screen has a very cheap stand (tilt only, and it's a bit too low for my preferences, looks like I'll have to grab a phone book), and none of the extras. (Of course, it's also vastly lower in price, too). I find that the picture on it is a little bit washed out, but I'm still trying to calibrate it better. From a distance, the image looks fine, but if you sit really close to it, you can see a slight shimmer in colours. I think this is related to the type of panel it is and the way it manages high colour. It has VGA and DVI ports for video, but the DVI cable that came with it has a very large, slightly rounded connector (that is, the plastic part that you grab). I couldn't physically attach it to my computer because the large plastic part of the connector was bumping into the slot above (that's at least partly the fault of the case designer). A DVI cable from another device works fine. The driver CD had the proper driver on it, but the documentation for another monitor.
No dead/stuck pixels, which was nice, though there is some bleed-through light at the top and bottom edge. All that aside though, I bought it for price and size, and for that it can't be beat.
