Intel adds new desktop processors to roadmap
It looks like those playing along with Intel's roadmap at home have a bit of updating to do to their scorecards, with HKEPC Hardware revealing a few new details on the chip maker's plans for the new year. The biggest bit of news this time around concerns Intel's new 45nm dual-core desktop processor, now codenamed "Wolfdale," which will have a thermal design power rating (TDP) of 65W, in line with current Core 2 Duo processors. Look for it to launch sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. Intel has also firmed up a few more details on its quad-core Yorkfield processor, with it clocking in with a 95W TDP and apparently still on track for a (late) Q3 release this year.[Via Reg Hardware]

Will they be in apples Macs?

hat!? Nothing higher than quad-core for 2008?!

These are desktop processors dude. Your average desktop is going to be lucky to take advantage of a single 4 core let alone something larger. Plus you then have bandwidth constraints on the FSB with so many cores on a single chip. Could you imagine an 8 core CPU on a 1 or 1.5Ghz FSB? Intel has bigger fish to fry then just slamming more cores into their chips. Weren't they working on an answer to AMD's integrated memory controller? *shrugs* Whatever.

hat = what

Yay for Wolfdale! We don't need more cores, we need smaller more energy efficent chips! Compliments the huge beefy GPUs of today with their grid killing energy requirements.

I want to know what happens after 45nm. I thought that 22nm was the next step, but intel didn't expect to be able to mass produce it until something like 2010-2020. I don't think people will be so happy if chips go ineffeicent again and start to take in 200 watts of power.

Hey! I am getting worried now. I want to buy an Apple laptop but I don't know when to shell out the cash. I was going to wait for the Macworld Expo but it seems no matter when I buy, it will be outdated in a matter of months. Help me! When is the best time to make a purchase?

@CYP
never =]
IDK man you should get one that suits your needs, look at current benchmarks and prices and try decide if what they offer is fast enough for the price, if not then you should hold of a bit
personally i would hold off until hybrid hard drives are used, i want better battery life
but then again i have no idea when that will be :P

It looks like AMD gets owned :) (It got owned already but now it gets even more owned!! :D)

What am I waiting for?
Is there any listed performance estimate of the upcoming processors from Intel?
I should be aware of what I am waiting for, among these Penryn, Wolfdale, Bearlake, 45nM, 65 nM, 800-1066-1333 Mhz FSB's, coupled with DDR2 or DDR3 memories?
If the overall gain from 2.1 Ghz Core 2 Duo, with 667 FSB with DDR2 lets say 1GB to Wolfdale 1333 FSB DDR3 is around 20-30 percent on home based applications(Mp3, Itunes, Apple TV or like products,), maybe I would better catch one of the current Core 2 Duo deals as the prices rocket down.
