Sony doubles Memory Stick Pro Duo format capacity to 8GB
They're slightly behind schedule on this, but Sony today announced the expected doubling of the Memory Stick Pro Duo format to 8GB. You'll be able to pick one of these bad boys up in February for the low, low (as we say in Kazakhstan: NOT!) price of $300.

$300 omg, that's a bit over the top

price per GB is outrageous compared to a Hard drive. yeah I know not same thing a hard drive and a memory stick but I'm looking at you PSP!
Ditch the cards and go for the hard drive Sony!
Clayj @ Jan 8th 2007 1:29PM
Well, this will at least force the prices down on the lower-capacity Memory Sticks, which is a good thing.

You have to give Sony a lot of credit for all their effort in keeping their propritary format a float.

Try finding a memory card reader that actually supports 8gig though. I can't even find a reader that can handle 2gb cards.

I'll never again buy a device/camera that only takes Sony Memory Sticks.

No one is goin to pay $300 for a memory stick... well, maybe if it cures cancer... but most likely not. If you want music and video, buy a 30GB ipod or Zune for the same price... or i dont know, a trip to somewhere.
whisper2053 @ Sep 12th 2007 2:38PM
An ipod or Zune doesn't play PSP, PSX, or any of the other myriad of console based emulated games. An 8 gig is probably the best thing for those who have a hacked PSP and it will most certainly sell. Quite a lot of them, in fact. With the average PS1 or PSP iso taking up 500-800mb per disk, that equates out to quite a lot of gaming on one stick. Find your facts before you make your opinion.

meanwhile, the memory stick micro sits capped at 1GB :(
Kyle @ Jan 8th 2007 2:50PM
This memory stick is NOT!! black.

Lots of people will pay $300 for an 8 gig MSPD.. That's the perfect size to fit 8-10 PSX games plus a season of your favorite TV show or a couple good movies.
Sony's probably very aware there is a market for this that is willing to pay a premium to look cool.

sony's memory sticks have always been a bit expensive.. but suppose someone possesses the cyber shot dsc-n2, with over 10Mega Pixels.. then i suppose the 8GB memory stick will be suitable for taking photos. 300$ is a bit expensive but quality and storage capacity has got a price!!

WRONG! First this the Memory Stick Ultra Pro Duo 8gig, at over twice the speed of Memory Stick Pro Duo and carries twice the capacity. But it falls back on speed to the Memory Stick Pro Duo format even though it fits into the slot.
A Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo 2gig w/4gig adapter (staks 2 x 2gig), is available on ebay less than $20. So you could get 4 ea 2gig Sticks using the adapters for 8gig total less than $80! That's what I did!!!

OK sorry just got them in mail. Can not put them all together. The adapter is just so you can use Memory Stick Pro Duo in the old size Memory Stick Pro slot! But all work fine and for $14 per 2gig stick and adapter each a bargain. $56 total for 8gigs of memory. With a iso loader and games/movies??? ;)
