The Apple iPhone

Capping literally years of speculation on perhaps the most intensely followed unconfirmed product in Apple's history -- and that's saying a lot -- the iPhone has been announced today. Yeah, we said it: "iPhone," the name the entire free world had all but unanimously christened it from the time it'd been nothing more than a twinkle in Stevie J's eye (comments, Cisco?). Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 4GB or 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quad-band GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode -- no word on standby time yet. In a twisted way, this is one rumor mill we're almost sad to see grind to a halt; after all, when is the next time we're going to have an opportunity to run this picture? The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Ships Stateside in June, Europe in fourth quarter, Asia in 2008.

Here's a primer on the use of patents "defensively"; what that means is that the patent gives you the legal right to sue people who infringe on your patent (using it without your permission if you chose to license it; the patent holder has the legal right to not license his invention, and to produce the invention exclusively). If you don't defend your patent by doing so, your patent is as good as nothing. That's all a patent is good for.

By that definition, the patent holder can't help but "monopolize" the patent; he (or the company that holds the patent) is the sole rights holder to the patent and can profit without competition from the patent for the duration of the patent's protection period; anyone who wants to use it would have to license the technology from the sole provider of it (a.k.a. a monopoly) if the patent holder choses to make it available for licensing, which they are under no obligation to do so. The technologies like what you see in the iPhone must have taken tons of work to prepare to Steve Jobs' standards of perfection. I don't blame them for wanting to keep it to themselves. They certainly earned it.

Campus Improvement Committee January 28, 2008 • The meeting began at 6:23pm. • In attendance: Linda Willett, Debra Koke, Paula Dugger, Bill Hooten, Khalid Shahnewaj, Joe Samuels, Jonathan Matlock, Kelly Matlock, Susan Dea, Stephanie Lee, Beth Cavazos, Melissa Abadie, Skye Bryant, and Mary Adams. Not in attendance: Delia Watley, Mabel Kubi, Michelle Young, Gloria Agyemang, Rhonda Burke, and Tannika Quash. • The minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed and accepted. • Townsell’s School Report Card and AEIS Report were distributed and the Public Hearing information was given. • The 2007-2008 Attendance Report for the 1st and 2nd six week cycles were also reviewed. We dropped 0.7%, to average 96.4%. When the attendance policy is violated, letters are sent home to parents. • Our school was chosen to begin a Teleparenting pilot program. The program is a communication device used to more-easily keep parents connected with the school. Data must be routinely “cleaned” to ensure its effectiveness. • The 2008 Summer School program will be offered to 3rd and 5th grade students who fail TAKS in reading (3rd), and reading or math (5th). Administrators will earn $27/hour; teachers, $25/hour; clerks, $12.50/hour; and, paras, $9/hour. Students will attend from 8:00-11:30, June 10th-July 1st and/or 2nd (depending on TAKS retake needs). Teachers will work an additional hour per day and train on June 9th. • Curriculum Interventions are currently underway. Writing Camp for 4th graders is beginning next week and will cover brainstorming, elaboration, etc. on Wednesdays. Science Fridays for 5th graders began last week. The students rotate between four groups that focus on the same topic. Mrs. Hooten and Mrs. Young are collaborating for 5th grade Reading Skills intervention. Third grade is also implementing an upcoming “NASA” Testing Preparedness program. • Balanced Literacy continues to be the staff development focus for the 2007-2008 school year. In addition, test data analysis is also an emphasis. Test results are routinely discussed and compared in order to create better teaching strategies. • The 2008-2009 District Calendar is being developed. The Region 10 sample calendar was presented. The district’s goal is to maintain 180 days in school. All districts are required to start the week of August 27th. • The updated Vision Statement, Mission Statement, and Board Goals were presented for review. • Enrollment Projections for the Fall of 2008 have been released. Townsell is projected to have 863 students, a small increase of seven. Staff contracts will be renewed later in the Spring based on these numbers. • Mrs. Willett gave a personnel update: Jodie Bass, a special education para, transferred and was replaced by Gisele Dionne. • Mrs. Abadie gave a Dream Builder’s update: o The DB Spring Semester officially began on January 14th. It will end May 16th. There are 212 students, 40 adult students, 7 daily volunteers, 28 staff members, 11 substitutes, 36 students in tutoring, and 4 students in Destination Imagination. There is still a waiting list. The updated schedule was also reviewed. A Nutrition class is coming. o Mr. Hooten and the Irving Noonday Lion’s Club donated a $300 gift card to WalMart. The donation will sponsor the Creative Cooking Class for Kindergarten-2nd grade students. o 3rd-5th grade Family Math Night will be February 26th from 6:00-7:00. Volunteers are needed to pop popcorn. o DB Incentive Bucks Days will be February 28th and March 27th. o Staff Development is scheduled in January, February, and April for Mrs. Abadie, Mrs. Lynch, and Ms. Smith. • Mr. Samuels gave a PTA update: o Townsell’s T-shirt sales have been a success. o A Spring Carnival is in the works for April or May. o $4,700 is currently in the budget. This cannot be carried over to the next school year. It was suggested that the money might be spent on CD players for the Library to be checked out by classroom teachers for Literacy Stations. • The meeting adjourned at 7:25pm. The next meeting will be April 14th, at 6pm, in the Townsell Library. Now, April 7th!!!

Another apple vs everything!!!

Well, 1st steve is gay, and so are all his products, I mean wts the fun in device ths not plug and play, waoo its gay!!
1: Bluetooth there but no file transfered or u cannot listen music on bluetooth stereo handset(Mono works fine.) - No Bluetooth for me..
2: 2Mp Camera - Hey no vdo recording, - No why will I buy phone which cannot record but just click - again gay!!
3: Itunes: If its not plugg and play, its gay..
4: DRM - I will have to unlock it to use it but again wt if I dont want to unlock it??
5: I cannot activate it on Linux(Best od, better than suck ass Mac, or windows.)
6: Total cost of iPhone: $2500.(Contract + Phone)

actually, CISCO has sued them - no deal was made before the announcement, but Jobs went ahead anyway and apparently never got back to Cisco.

And Apple says - first time the name is used for a cellphone - but if it has wifi, which it does, then it's really close to the iPhone that Linksys sells. (voip anyone?) and I wouldn't bank against cellphones and voip converging in the near future. Cisco holds a very good hand here.

Cisco may have lost its chance to make money off of Apple's recognizable "i" product line. After all, when ever anybody see's an iPod, iDock, iTune, iPhoto we all think Apple. So even if Cisco had the name we would all assume iPhone is Apple. Who is trying to screw who out of profits here? Obviously the world associates iProducts with Apple.

However it appears the boat left without Cisco on this one. Good try though:

Who looks like the dumbass now? This Sim card slot IS on top of the phone in an ejectable tray that you need to use a paper clip to push the eject button. The battery is an internal component and the inside of the phone can't (or shouldn't) be accessed. If you need a new battery, Apple will have to replace it for you. So before you start calling people names, you should definitely KNOW what you are talking about.

the iphone i announced to appear in 2007 , the n95 from nokia which is a 2006 model cand kick iphone's arse very easily, the iphone is just some sort of eye candy, i have a 6680 and i would'n trade it for iphone:)
try comparing the iphone with the n95 on gsm arena, you will be surprised.

This isn't anything like the ROCKR. It has iTunes. That's basically it.

This has far more capacity, video capabilities (Widescreen at that), is touch-sensitive, runs OS X, etc...

Unless it's a slider, it looks like it's going to be touch sensitive screen. That's going to be the big 'make or break' as far as I'm concerned.
I've never liked those things (SE P800/900 with flap removed, T-Mobile MDA, etc) - the touch screen is a nightmare to try and dial numbers from - a proper keypad can't be beat.
However, Apple do have a hell of a rep for doing real nice hardware and interface design, so if anyone can successfully implement it in a non-sucky way - it's them.

Jobs called it a "multi-touch" screen. If I'm right, it's based on some technology that was being demo'ed a year ago - touch screens that allow multiple simultaneous contacts, permitting complex gestures like "pinching" an icon to click it.

Although this is great!!!!! but cingular is not all that great on coverage let alone will cingular ONLY be the company having this phone on their coverage? Shouldn't we have an option on whether or not we want to have our current ph. comp carry this phone. provided that the options are there for internal changes for compatibility

Though I do point out that T-Mo has been known to not beta test phones before releasing them. Could lead to problems?
