We may
debate which format is better for high definition -- LCD or Plasma -- but Samsung for its part is going ahead with new plasma displays, including three new 1080p-capable sets for the Korean market. The sets come in 42-, 50- (SPD-42- and -50Q92HD), and 63-inch models, and all include Samsung's Ultra Daylight mode technology and 15,000:1 contrast ratios. The largest model (SPD-63P71FHD) also includes Bluetooth inside so you can pair it with headphones, or even a Bluetooth-enabled printer... for creating some hard copy of that
special image off your next-gen DVD. Follow the Read link for more pics of models and sets.

I've got last year's 46" 1080p Samsung (model LNS4695D), and it looks like there's pretty poor color depth on it. I Netflix'ed "The Illusionist" the other day and there's an incredibly disappointing amount of moire/banding in all the brownscales. Granted it's a DVD (using S-Video, although HDMI looks exactly the same), but resolution's not the issue... it's the limited pallette.
I'm guessing.
A telltale "fuzzy black band" appears towards the top of the screen when showing a black signal from the DVD player as well. The band is about 15% the height of the screen, and is a truer black value than the sort of "1A1A1A" (arbitrary hex value pulled outta ass) level of dark grey otherwise shown. Just mentioning this to see if anyone else noticed anything like this. Again, S-Vid and HDMI produce the same effect.
I love Engadget & reading up on stuff, but unfortunately remain one of those types who'll go out and buy stuff without really knowing everything about it. But damn it, who really is? /rant
Has anyone heard about color depth issues on Samsung TVs? Sorry for any threadjacking...

Friends don't let friends buy Samsung Plasmas.

I love Korean women....I mean TV's, yeah TV's.

Dave, all DVDs have that problem. It's just the limited DVD format's problem, not your TV mostly likely. If you watch The Illusionist on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD it I bet it would look incredible. The DVD format is just too outdated to look good on today's HDTVs. The illusionist is actually probably the worst DVD for this problem. All DVDs show this limited color depth, but some worse than others. The Illusionist simply has a limited color depth overall (mostly browns and oranges) so it really shows. To minimize this effect, run a THX optimizer (found on any PIXAR DVD, I use Finding Nemo) or use Avia or DVE calibration DVDs to set the proper brightness/contrast on your TV. Mostly of that color banding you're seeing isn't even meant to be seen if you have the contrast set correctly, it will blend in with the deep blacks.

Between the TV and the girl on the left... I'm going to for the girl on the left. >_>
Gotta love sexually suggestive advertising. XD
Brandon @ Feb 27th 2007 3:18PM
The TV would stand out in any entertainment setup, it looks good. With larger LCD's in production I will pass. Unless the girls in the pic convince me otherwise lol...
CaptSaltyJack @ Feb 27th 2007 3:46PM
I'll take the one on the left!
FIR3BRDRACR @ Feb 27th 2007 6:30PM

Those Korean girls hold their own against Japanese babes. And that girl on the left, damn, she is pretty close to a real life anime looking girl I have seen in a while...of course without the triple Ds...to bad though, but still very hot. Ahhh, subliminal advertising, my favorite! Is there any other kind by the way?
p.s. Ron2 and Pete thanx a bunch for those links ;)
