Final weekend for the cake contest - win an OQO Model 02!

- OQO Model 02
- Samsung Blackjack
- A copy of Gears of War and an Xbox 360 Wireless Headset
- v-moda vibe la mocha headphones
- Mystery swag bag #2
A few rules:
- No photoshops. Seriously, we shouldn't have to explain this one. Take lots of pictures -- be able to prove it's your cake, and that it's real! Note that you don't actually have to mail us a cake.
- Contests are open to anyone in the U.S. Unless you work for Engadget or Weblogs, Inc.
- Enter by dropping your pictures of your cake in comments, or email your pictures in to contest (at) engadget (dot) com, subject "Birthday cake" (no quotes).
- Yes, even professional bakers are allowed to enter, so let's see some creativity! Best cake (as judged by Engadget) wins!
- You've got until 11:59PM EST Tuesday the 13th to enter your cake.
- You can enter this contest more than once and you may enter our other Birthday contests, but you can't win more than once. If you happen to win more than once (which is pretty unlikely, but still) we'll ask you to choose just one of your prizes.

Does anyone know when the winners in all the contests are ready?
I'm sure I won in the first one, just can just feel it!
Brad Nolan @ Mar 9th 2007 6:10PM
I find it hard to believe that Engadget is offering a prize that not even shipping yet. OQO is still vapor ware, not a single unit ship yet,
Deadmonkey @ Mar 9th 2007 6:39PM
the first generation OQO has been shipping for years, the second generation is set to ship within an extremely short period of time, I've seen one with my own eyebones and touched one with my own fingerbones. On the Flipside, the Flipstart is still vapor.
Ryan Block @ Mar 9th 2007 7:11PM
Yeah, it's not exactly vaporous. I've seen them around, and played with the 02 numerous times. What it means is you'll be the first kid on your block to get one -- if you win!
Brad Nolan @ Mar 9th 2007 7:40PM
I have called numberous times to order one, and only heard that its not shipping for 8 to 12 weeks and this is the same statement I heard for 8 weeks. HMMMMM>.. I know the first on is out, but to show the second generation without having a solid ship date?? come on...even apple set a vapor date of JUNE for the iPhone.

US only competition?
Gutted! How about a second round for the nice folks in the UK?
Michael W @ Mar 13th 2007 12:07PM
We emailed in photos of our cake yesterday (Monday the 12th). Should we have received a confirm that our entry was accepted? Wy wife would be really upset if after all that work we somehow missed the contest!

This is my creation dubbed the iPhoneHome Cake!

Wow, not a lot of comment entries this year. More E-mails? Or less entries? I love these contests so here's hoping it's the former.

Here's my entry, sent in Tuesday night: http://www.flickr.com/gp/23306098@N00/xH411m. I call it "Cakebook En Fuego," and it was inspired by this Engadget article: http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/12/macbook-catches-fire-down-under/.
Sean @ Mar 17th 2007 2:42AM
Dang zekelion! Almost the exact same idea as me. I utilized a black-powder charge and steelwool/electric ignition. How did you go about attracting Homeland Secur... er blowing up the cake? I mean other than the fire crackers.

Hah! I didn't think I'd be the only one to come up with that idea (I think that's called convergent evolution). It was fairly low tech: I basically stuffed a cake with smoke bombs and a few sparklers.
Post some pictures of you're creation--I'm interested in seeing it!
P.S. Were we supposed to get a confirmation email if we sent our submission via an email listed above?
Sean @ Mar 17th 2007 9:18PM
I don't think we get confirmations (I didn't last year for the Ferrari cake, and won a T-shirt :) ).
Here is a photo of mine going up. Unfortunatly I didn't take a good shot of the "Device" itself .Essentially I put a small pile if Black powder in a pocket of tissue paper and then placed it on a bed of steel-wool with two electrodes and wires leading into the bottom of the cake. Apply 12-volt power source and voila!(ended up using a car jump box to guarantee ignition). The damndest thing is the fricken' fondant icing proved nigh on indestructable.

That looks great! You're right, frosting is a very good fire retardant.
I decided to post a video of the detonation of my creation at Google Video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-369196843835058102. Having the opportunity to make this cake was a godsend as it kept me sane through a family emergency. One of my immediate family members became critically ill on Tuesday, but I couldn't fly to visit her until the next day. I chose to distract myself by making the cake on Tuesday night. Making pyrotechnic cakes could be a legitimate form of therapy--I wonder what Dr. Phil would think about that?
I can't wait to see the results of this year's cake contest--there's bound to be some really good ones this year.
arman @ Mar 20th 2007 11:36PM
The tension is killing me...When do we find out?!?!?!?!?!?!
Evil_inc @ Mar 26th 2007 8:47PM
Well I had planned to hold off on eating my cake until the winners were announced, but the cake went bad so now all I have is the memory of it. And these pictures:

Did they forget about us?!?
Vespa @ Apr 9th 2007 3:32PM
This whole waiting a month to find out about the cake contest results is NOT COOL! Even if the prizes aren't ready to ship.... they should at least tell us who won!
dougfeig @ Apr 10th 2007 11:15AM
Seriously, does anyone know what's going on?
Melty @ Apr 10th 2007 7:21PM
Well I wasn't planning on showing my cake and just waiting for the results. But it's taking way too long and I'm getting inpatient... I think they forgot about us.

@ Melty: That looks great! I love the dock, working screen, & touch scrollers. The keys look a little off, but I'm impressed.
