Nokia's N95 now shipping... everywhere but here
It's not much use to those of us in North America but Nokia flagship "multimedia computer" just launched pretty much everywhere but here. It's mid-march which means the €550 ($736) Nokia's N95 is now shipping in "key markets" spread across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. So while the rest of world is enjoying that 5 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, WiFi, HSDPA, and dual-slidin' S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 action, we get to probe the FCC filing in hopes of a hint for a release closer to home. Remember, if you do manage to snap one up then please let us know where and for how much dinero -- mama says it's good to share.

It's got a regular 3.5mm headphone socket. You're not limited to the bundled headphones in any way.
P.S. Calm down, PEZ. It's only a phone. :)

The price in the auction is US $1,176.00 so far... Wow.
i'd be tempted to buy this phone cos it's packed full of fun, but after using this here N73 for a few months i'll probs stay well clear. the S60 O/S is glitchy and slow and my phone regularly restarts itself, so this one might well be the same (the FP1 on this version of the O/S probs just adds GPS functionality and one or two other things - the core will be the same)
think i'll wait for the HTC Kaiser
I've NEVER had a problem with a S60 OS. You must have gotten a lemon.
Back to the phone: Does it even support the odd networks that are available in the US?
LS - Seriously - I agree with GL. I have an N73 & have never had a reboot. I think the S60 is a very strong piece of software.
The menu is somtimes slow to move, but only by a second or two. & considering what I use it for: GPS (TomTom), PIM to the extreme (1000+ entries), podcatcher, etc I'm not too bothered.
If the N95 really does get into the 700's I'll bite. So far it's either eBay account hackers "selling" or crazy high prices.
I've had my N73 for a couple months and not only is it by far the best phone I've ever had, it's the best camera I've ever had cause it's always with me. I've actually had someone spill beer on it and drop it from 5 feet up and it didn't even flinch. No reboots either. I'll admit, it's slower than I'd like, but that's a small price to pay. Can't wait to upgrade to the N95. Perhaps the one with problems had some bad aftermarket software installed?
Been waiting for this one for a while!!
It's shipping now but unfortunately won't be available for another 2/3 weeks here in Aus due to the phone apparently failing initial testing on our local networks with some bugs in the software here and there.
If they can sort out the little niggles in the software, this will be one helluva phone. Can't wait.
LS - generally speaking, I did not have problems with the S60 OS (3rd edition, like in E61 or N73 and N95). It could be just your phone, yet, with N70 (and the previous Symbian version) a year ago, I had the same. Slow, buggy. I did upgrade the software on N70 and most of my problems disappeared. But it's always better to wait with first versions ;)
Hmmm, my E61 was horribly unstable---not "Treo 650 unstable" but unacceptable nonetheless. I gave it to a friend who claims it's been perfect to him even though I saw it freeze while he was using it. I guess people have different standards.
The real problem with the E61 is not the stability or the lack of reset button which forces you to remove the increasingly creaky back cover, it's the worst-of-breed usability. No smartphone is harder or clumsier to use. Love the spoken caller ID though, in a british accent no less.
This device would be more interesting with a QWERTY keypad and with software from someone other than Nokia.
how long does it take for the price on ebay to actually sell for msrp?
It only has GSM 850/1900 + EDGE for use in the US. You can certainly use it, but you're not going to be using it to its full potential.
seriously, my N73 works like a bag of hammers (read: not very well) whenever I try to do simple tasks like take a photograph. And I'm running the latest version of the firmware too 'cos I updated that using Nokia's updater software (which in itself is unbelievably buggy too - nice one Nokia)
touch screen and qwerty would be nice things to have and i really cant see the point of having a 5mp camera on a phone unless they can take photos without a purple haze (my N73's 3.2MP is crappy enough in that department, thanks)
no, I think I'll have to let this one slip by
I'm really tempted myself but I think I'll wait for the HTC Kaiser too.
I have a Nokia N80 right now and although I really like the phone, I find I use my mobile device for much more than calls/texts and a Windows Mobile device would be ideal for me next.
Can't help but be tempted by the N95 though, looks a beauty!
A friend of mine ordered one a couple weeks ago. I think he got it about two weeks ago, but he hasn't opened it yet. He's going to sell it and put money towards a car. I believe he paid around $1000 for it.
Anno 2007 I can't believe S60 still doesn't have a touchscreen.
It will be interesting to see how Sony respond to this.
There are only a few coming to Norway in April, the second shipment comes in May and got lots more..

They're on eBay.co.uk for about £400
I came across this phone and it looks amazing. I wish it weren't so pricey though. I am thinking of just trying to pick up an N80ie to save some $$. The 5mp cam makes it so much more tempting though. I am in dire need of a phone that is quad-gsm w/ wifi. Hmm....
Funny... I don't see anybody complaining about the price (over $700) like many did with the suggested "lower" iPhone prices. (And is that price with a 2 year provider contract or just the phone?)
Wonder why that is... (rhetorical question)
...
HamiltonGuy - it's simple, why. Of course it's the unlocked price... as far as I know, in UK there will be free N95s with 2-year contract... So... iPhone is 400 USD, N95 is free with contract... hmmm, though question. Maybe 3G, 5 MP camera, GPS on iPhone ... oops, still 400 USD difference.
(Just joking with the last part, but the first sentence is true. 400 USD with 2-year contract is ROBBERY :-)
ah good to see that Series 60 still evokes the
love it or hate it response. Over the last two
years, I have used windows mobile, palm, s60, and
a blackberry.
The best for business was WindowsMo, the best for
third party apps was Palm, the best email was the
RIM device (no contest), the best multimedia was
the symbian. This phone is not meant for business
users hence no touchscreen, its really meant for
people who want one device to listen to music and
take semi-decent pictures. For this purpose I
think its a clear winner.
The iPhone is probably going to be a better music
device but the fact of the 5 mp camera as well as
gps and open architecture means until iPhone 2.0
this will be my weekend device, its simply the
most advanced converged device out there. (By the
way I have had hands on with this phone)
Damn you Nokia! Why do you treat the US like Lepers when it comes your devices.
I got 1, and yes its nice and shiney.
My distributor has had them for the last week. I can order them for my store... at least less than what they're going for on eBay... we're keeping them special order since not many people here feel like dropping that much on a phone here in central NJ...
where in nj is your store? name number?
I got one of these off eBay for 400, not including shipping. You just have to look around. I believe quite a few sellers are offering them at 400 each, they just say "lot of XX" but they are actually selling them individually.
LS, I agree with all the other N73 users. S60v3 has been very stable on my N73. Taking photos can be slow to start up however. All other functions have worked perfectly for me. Check that you do have the latest firmware. Nokia Software Updater will not necessarily update to the latest firmware - it depends on your phone branding and country as to whether it updates or not to the latest. My firmware is 3.0638.0.0.30. Version 2 had problems.
This is one is really cool phone. Kind of a high pricetag though.
Anyway, we also dug up some more videos going over some features.

Well... I think something might be on the horizon for the US of A... Today I was at Chicago's Nokia Store (My N80 was acting weird so I took it there for service..the guy tried to flash it and 15 min later he came downstairs and said they bricked it..so now I'll get a new replacement :-) ). When I was chatting with the tech about N95 he said they are not sure. As I was leaving another guy brought downstairs little leaflets with N95 smacked on it... I looked at him and smiled and said "What's the scoop". He looked at me with a smirk on his face and said "we're not sure yet"... I'll be there in a week to pick up my fixed/replaced N80... Who knows..maybe universe will bless us with N95 sooner than we think
Our local Nokia store sells the unlocked phone for roughly USD 885.00. I think I'll wait for prices to drop a bit for a few months.
Dunno where that €550 pricetag comes from, but here the thing costs €954.95 from http://www.expansys.ie/p.aspx?i=141579. As far as I can tell, thats the only place we can get it here in Ireland. Who the hell would pay 1 grand for a phone?
sorry i meant that message for aj the guy with the store in nj.
hey Waylan, I got a offer from ebay selling for $400, it's shipping from Romania and need to pay western union, do u think i can trust that? or can you tell me which one u bought it from, thanks
Picked up one up today for 749.00 at the Nokia store downtown Chicago.. Currently the phone is not available for sale on the Nokia website, but is available to pick up at the Nokia NY store and Nokia CHICAGO store ONLY.. all i have to say I LOVE IT
I heard from a Nokia Representative that AT&T will be receiving test units (in the high hundreds) to test on the network. AT&T is not slotted to carry this phone, BUT they could possible pick it up as a bonus phone. I'm hopeful...
