ThinkPad Reserve Edition unveiled
Those hoping for more than an X61s in cow's clothing will be disappointed to learn that there isn't much more to this ThinkPad Reserve Edition mystery. Lenovo unveiled the laptop today, with the expected Executive Support services and of course that leather case distracting from the fact that the laptop is nothing new hardware-wise. The support staff apparently will go the extra mile for you, with guaranteed on-site support in major cities within four hours, and even preventative tune-ups to make sure nothing does go wrong. Lenovo used some fancy Japanese saddle stitching techniques for the leatherwork, and left plenty of room for that extended 7 hour battery to do its thing. Specs include a Centrino Pro Core 2 Duo L7500 processor, WWAN, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD and of course that 12.1-inch not-a-touch-screen. Lenovo even tosses in an external multi-burner and an 80GB USB drive for good measure, but despite all the freebies, we're having a hard time swallowing that $5,000 pricetag. Which is just as well, since the laptop is currently being sold "by invitation only," and we're not sitting on any invitations. Let us know if you have better luck.

I love how you can see the guy's eyes going back and forth as he reads his cue cards.
Also, am I the only one that had a very hard time finding pictures of the thing open? Or have they fallen so much in love with that leather exterior that they think all anyone cares about is what it looks like being carried around as a status symbol?
Is that the most infuriating promo site ever? A spinning lump of leather - nothing more to graphically reveal about the thing, it's cased in leather, WOOT!
Yeah, no kidding. I was thinking, "When are they going to show the photos of it opened up?" Annoying site, indeed.

I realize IBM offers all those custom "services" for this Thinkpad, but would anyone seriously use all that on a system like this? I really don't think so. So I'd have to say, $5000 for those specs and some cow is ridiculous.
For $3500, I could buy myself an Asus VX2S Santa Rosa (due this month, I believe), which (apart from the WWAN) is MUCH better spec'd, and like the VX2, comes with a carbon fiber exterior, leather interior with the same style stitching you'd find in a Lamborghini, and accessories (which includes a matching mouse, leather mouse pad, mouse bag, cleaning cloth, and a superbly nice leather computer bag (with both computer and bag adorned with one small Lambo badge a piece). Whether someone is a fan of the Lambo styling or not, it's very tastefully done and makes the system just as beautiful as it is powerful. Then of course, I'd have $1500 left over for any other gadgets or accessories and a great lunch for two. :) Personally, I just think that would be a better way to spend $5000.
A leather-wrapped ThinkPad that's too "exclusive" for you!
What a ridiculously stupid idea.
And what a pretentious dork the narrator is.
For $5000 bucks, I would call in this computer in everyday for random crap just to get my money's worth.
This is worse than those delayed t61 shipments.....good going Lenovo !
IBM should come in and stop this crap.
lenovo needs to get the executive support team to handle their existing customers who are getting f----- over by their incompetent customer service.
1hr wait on the phone, no replies to emails, are just the beginning of the nightmare for customers who ordered the Thinkpad T61 in may. The new customers who ordered in June are happily getting their laptops while the ones ordered in May still doesn't know when they'll get theirs.
see what i am talking about: http://www.lenovoblogs.com/insidethebox/?p=84
Wow... I thought iPhone was a rip-off...
Fake Steve Jobs has one already:

This thing came with Windows! Get your techs over here for preventive help immediately!
That's what I'd do. Make them put Linux on it. Then call them in to replace all the hardware that wasn't supported...
Nah. Nevermind. Let's not dream of ways to give 'em trouble. Just go with one of those Dell laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled, and mock these things every once in a while.
I am curious how long it will be before a third party comes up with leather "ThinkPad" covers that mimic this.
Haha, this is just like Microsoft with Vista Ultimate, make something look pretty and you can overcharge for it as much as you want.
can anyone figure out, which resolution the display has? the standard x60 and x60s only have 1024x768, but the tablet version of the same size (12.1") is available with a sxga+ (1400x1050) display. getting an 5k$ laptop with a resolution of 1024x768 does not sound all that hot.
Wow, are we sure it is $5,000? You could just carry around a second x61 for that! I disagree with people on IBM's customer service, been good for me. I have the x41, and I love it. Time for a replacement and was thinking this could be good... but no invitation.
I think at for $5,000 you should at least get a Solid State hard drive.
