Nokia E61i, E65 get official in the US
Americans looking for a little piece of the Nokia Eseries pie just had their task made a little easier today, with Nokia announcing that the QWERTY equipped E61i and E65 slider have been officially released this side of the pond. Besides showing up in the Chicago and New York flagship stores, the devices will be provided through a handful of B2B distributors, Dell's site, Gateway, Mobile Planet, and others. We're still crossing fingers, toes, and a variety of other limbs in the hopes of an eventual E90 release here, but these two are certainly decent fodder in the meanwhile. Look for both to run about $400.

..and of course, NONE HAVE 3G!!!!
haha @ Jun 25th 2007 5:01PM
and 'none' require a data connection to get most of the apps running ... or say, get the 80% of the phone to work at its full potential either.

I had the E61 & sold it because the lack of a camera bothered me. The 61i takes care of that.
The E65 looks sharp, but doesn't have A2DP. I know it's business, but why not include stereo bluetooth?
Battery life on both looks great considering the functionality. I wish the N series would take a page from the E & up the battery size.

A friend of mine has a E65 red, it looks nice and slim compared to my thick N80. The slider is better too.

What? They're not going to release the one with the BMW remote control in it? That stinks. I was looking forward to driving from the back seat.

I'd rather be deaf, dumb and blind than having to deal with a first gen iphone.

Just because it says "UMTS" doesn't mean it works in North America. The E61 has UMTS but it runs on the European frequency spectrum, which is different from the US... so the "feature" is useless on this side of the pond.

does anyone know what the best place to pick up unlocked phones for a reasonable price is, google is a madhouse for these things. Im trying to find one thatll work with tmobile and not cost an arm and a leg
theninthcloud @ Jun 25th 2007 6:50PM
good places to get unlocked phones:
amazon.com
myworldphone.com
mobileplanet.com
Anthony @ Jun 25th 2007 7:59PM
mobilebee.com
tigerdirect.com - the nice thing about them is that some phones (including the N95) have a 30 day return policy in case you just don't like them.

I have an unlocked Euro version e61 (or was that the e62?). It's slllooowww. I hope the e61i has improved performance because it was otherwise a solid phone/PDA.

I am glad to see improvements made to the E series phones. I bought my Nokia E62 via Cingular. I was pretty exited at this time to get a new one because I’ve always had Nokia. The first mobile phone I remember having was a Nokia 6110. Then I got a Nokia 7110 (which is pretty much the same phone from The Matrix) which I used to develop WAP applications. Then last year I upgraded again to a Nokia 7250 (which has GPRS) and then to the E62.
I used to show to everyone how my Nokia was easy to use. This has stopped with the E62 because this phone is so sloooow.
What you did is like selling a Ferrari with a very slow engine: unusable!
I want to tell you that I am not the only one, I know several people only in my company that returned their E62.
I am really disappointed and I am going to switch for good to Blackberry because I am not going to bet on the new E61i.

BEFORE YOU EVEN THINK OF BUYING THIS PHONE
I bought E65 and its an outright PATHETIC PHONE. It claims about Wireless LAN, but its not able to connect to any wireless hotspots. First i thought that this is some problem with my phone, but it seems that this is general problem with all E65.
Whenever I try to connect to a wireless, my phone connect and even gets an IP adress but the moment go to a website it says "Web No gateway reply"
Just do a google search "Nokia E65 Web no gateway reply" and see the number of answers you get! Many people suggest different solutions, but if you have to do this all everytime you see a new hotspot then the Wifi is practically USELESS.

In my opinion it is about security. if i take the wpa key i use on my house router (so i have a protected network trying to access it without a key, i get that No Gateway Response message).
This happens when you try to connect with a laptop and you don't know the key.
I even took a look on my router, when i try to access it with the correct key, at Wireless Connected Clients i can see my phone with a correct ip (within my internal red ip class: for example: 192.168.1.12) but when i get the key out , i see an ip like 169.256.0.1. This happens to a laptop with a wrong key too. (anyone can try it)
So, try to activate Automatic IP and DNS, enter the right key, specify the correct number of key for each connection.
As far as i can see, when you say, that you connect to some hotspots....are you sure they are public? what if they are protected with keys and while you don't know it, you get that error?
The wifi phones, it is supposed to connect to public, free, unencrypted networks( hotels, bars and pubs, even parks or beach).
I can bet, you will love your phone very soon :P

Some routers require the MAC code of the device also.. This is extra protection.
