Eric Lempel, the gentleman behind PlayStation Networks Operations, was kind enough to share news on the company's blog about the
upcoming 1.82
firmware update for Sony's black box, hitting
PS3s stateside
in a matter of days now. The update (which is already available in Japan) will step up the AVC from Main Profile to High Profile, thus allowing playback of HD content via H.264/MPEG-4 files. The video upgrade appears to be the only feature of this bump, although Eric says the company is working on audio issues that some users have been taking Sony to task on.

Update: According to our astute readers, this firmware update went live last night. So go get it.
This is confusing! Bluray playback already supports H.264 High profile. Movie trailers downloaded from the stores are already high def 1080P AVC - may be main profile. So, is the new feature the ability to play high profile AVC downloaded from online or other user media. I did not know it already did not do that. I wish they would just add DTS-HD-MA to PCM and be done with it!
You replied to the wrong person there, but it has happened before, even though it's thankfully far more rare than the X360 bricking, and golly, trolling would be bashing X360's then with snide jokes then, wouldn't it?
The update is already available for the US. It became available sometime before 9pm yesterday.
Released within days?
I got the 1.82 update on my PS3 this morning.
I think this update bricked my PS3? Its screwing with my visual settings and Im getting static after it downloads. Anyone out there getting this too? I also cant get online with Rainbow Six Vegas without this update... HELP...
It's extremely unlikely to have bricked, firmware updates bricking PS3's is unheard of.
Are you sure your not just trolling, or have mixed up your 360 and PS3?
Inept. The update was released Tuesday night. I patched mine last night so I could play darkness.
Just got my playstation only because my dad wanted a blu ray player and its already had 2 updates in a week or so.
Great isn't it? The console is constantly being improved upon. The progress make in 6 months is unbeliable. Imagine how great the PS3 will be a year, or even 4 from now...
I updated last night and have been unable to login to the Playstation Network ever since.
Omg, I hate these PSN updates, they take so freaking long to install. and then I gotta restart da console and watnot. I don't get it why does a update need soo much time to install, heck even the demo you gotta install and it takes LOOOOOOONG. It is weird but howcome the 360 updates are so fast and easy but PS3 updates and demo are so long to install.
Well I hate the way every time I update my 360, or try a new game, the damn thing fails, and I have to send it back to Microsoft. It takes weeks..
I'm already on my 21st replacement 360...
So now can you get 5.1 HE sound+AVC High profil 1080p (say from nero or x264) to play from an MP4 file?
@yannick - Are you factoring in the time it takes to then call MS, get them to send you a box, wait for the box, pack the 360 up and send it away, wait... wait... wait... then finally it arrives. my 360 updates take a lot longer than my PS3... have had two separate updates brick two different 360s.
The only thing about the PS3 update I don't like is having to plug the sixaxis via USB to proceed. I should be able to do everything via the blu-ray remote. Especially since Blu-ray for me is its only function (until GTA4)
I really like the fact Sony actively updates the firmware like this. It's really nice to see the progression and how soon it's happening.
Engadget doesn't have a PS3 running 24/7 to know when updates come out??? I got mine last night and I live in California!
We all know Joysti... err Engadget is teh bias against $ony. They are too busy playing Halo to bother with the PStriple

"The update (which is already available in Japan) will step up the AVC from Main Profile to High Profile, thus allowing playback of HD content via H.264/MPEG-4 files."
It already allowed HD resolutions, only now you also get High Profile support (which just means you have a broader toolset for encoding AVC/H.264)
Just finished testing the new firmware and I was able to play HD Program Stream files of *.mpg without problems. It won't play Transport Stream files of *.ts or .tp 'YET'. You have to convert .ts or .tp to .mpg or any H.264 format.
By the way, PS3 does connect to any Vista connected network media server including Home Basic edition. I was testing the new firmware with connected Vista media server and was able to connect and play to all of my HD *.mpg files. Before, Sony blocked this function. I guess they are being more generous or are they?
sony seems to be releasing a lot of updates based entirely on pleasing their user base.
Question for me is... Will this allow 'x'264 playback?
I see so many um... videos out there that are in x264 format. If this can play them... That GREATLY increases my chances of getting a Playstation3!
How can I get my "backup" Blu-Ray movies to play on the PS3??? I bought the burner, they copy on my computer, but then it says "invalid disc" or something...
$17 is quite expensive for a coaster.
So PS3 won't play BDMV movies if I burn them? That's ridiculous. What's even worse than $17 coasters is a $500 crappy drive for my desktop...
Come one Xbox or PS3 first one of you to support AAC 5.1 get's my dollars. I know you want them!
this is why i love sony with their support of ps3 so much. how many updates have they done in the limited time that ps3 has been out. though MS has done their fair share of updates w/ the 360, someone made a very interesting point a while ago...it sucks that the core 360 doesn't have a hard disk and when MS wants to do an update, they have to keep this in mind, which keeps them fairly limited to what they can do w/ their updates.
Just baught my ps3 and loooooooovin it ;p
An XviD/Avi support pack in the next update would be even better!
My 360 has already been able to do this since the spring update. Great feature if you don't mind converting hours of video. The Xbox will only stream 2 Channel Audio and it is not worth it in my opinion.
Btw, before you call me a 360 hater look at my stats and games at xbox.com - DocACE911 GT
use your 360 for your pirate, oops, i mean "backup disk" movies. use your ps3 for watching the hd stuff that you make with you sony hd camcorder. i write it to a dvd-r as avchd and it looks great on that hdtv. i'm psych'ed because now as i surf the web on my ps3, i can d/l the h264/mp4 files now also. try that on your 360! surf the web that is, no m$ is gonna canabilize that pc/ie market... i have both a 360 and a ps3, they each have their respective strengths. enjoy it all!!!
WOW, another PS3 Update. This is just silly. Why not spread them out a little bit. Get more bang for the buck. It's always a large update and a long Install. With the 360 It's twice a year for a update, it takes no time at all to download and it's installed quick, Reboot and done with new features.
So ye-pee, a new Video format only upgrade, I know, how about some GREAT GAMES SONY!!!!! Between this and the 5 free movies now when buying a PS3, It's just making the PS3 more and more of a HDTV Video player, is that really the Image SONY is going for the PS3? It's like Sony really doesn't care about Games anymore.
The best part!! Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse support. My Logitech diNovo Bluetooth keyboard and mouse work flawlessly with the PS3! I have the actual charter/receiver plugged into my xbox360 for keyboard work via basic wireless signals. The PS3 now allows for Bluetooth pairing internally, so I have the one keyboard basically linked to both systems making it a pretty ideal wireless solution for my gaming habbit.
Whoo Hoo!!
diNovo? yeah of course it works miracles....when it cost like 199euro here....which is like 33% the price of a PS3...for a keyboard......
hoping for a firmware for PS3 that will allow it to handle house chores for me (laundry, ironing, etc etc)
