Fujitsu's 8.9-inch Lifebook P8240 Vista tablet: 32GB SSD at just 2.1-pounds
Damn, if you've gone tablet and thought Fujitsu's ultra-portable Lifebook T8140 was hot, then you'd best check their P8240 before opening your wallet. It's not the most powerful convertible in the world with a max configuration sporting a Core Solo U1400 proc and Intel GMA 950 graphics. What it lacks in power however, is more than made up for in portability: 8.9-inch, 1,280 x 768 LCD; up to 32GB SSD or 80GB disk; up to 9.1-hours on extended battery or 4.3-hours in a wee bit of kit weighing just 2.1-pounds. Windows Vista Business will cost ya ¥270,000 (about $2,188) out the gate.

/sarcasm
Jonathan Keim @ Jun 29th 2007 2:06PM
People complaining about the iphone post more about the iphone then engadget
seanC @ Jun 29th 2007 2:34PM
who said I was complaining? I thought I was on the wrong site is all... ;)
boe @ Jun 29th 2007 1:51PM
Wow - smaller screen than their competitors (12" sony) with the same weight and a slow processor - where do I sign up?
arthur barnhouse @ Jun 29th 2007 2:01PM
Let me see if I can explain this to you: You are an idiot.
boe @ Jun 29th 2007 2:16PM
Brilliant response - care to compare IQs, SAT scores, Iowa standards, Achievement scores, university GPAs?
Or would you like to actually discuss why you think the Fujitsu is better than the competitors reviewing actual facts and specs?
arthur barnhouse @ Jun 29th 2007 2:25PM
I've met you before. Not you personally, but I've met your kind. I won't compare specs because it's not how fast the machine is or how much RAM it has. The machine is about how damn small it is, that being a useful factor in and of itself. Then you will compare it to a 14" dell and declare that 8.9" a pointless form factor, as if there was a single form factor that was ideal for all purposes and individuals. And I'm not interested in having that argument for the 15th goddamned time on the internet.
Chuckles McGee @ Jun 29th 2007 2:37PM
Gotta say that the beauty is in the form factor. Sony makes a 12 inch tablet? I couldn't find any tablet (unless you count that 4.5 inch UMPC) from Sony- at least not on any US site.
danny @ Jun 29th 2007 3:21PM
This Fujitsu is a tablet pc. The Sony ultraportable laptops don't have the touch interface functionality that the Fujitsu has. That's the difference right there.
PS. That Sony UX upmc monstrosity doesn't count.
jg @ Jun 29th 2007 4:10PM
I have to admit, complaining that it has too small a screen is stupid. They designed it for people who want that 8.9" screen. It's not a problem, it's not a mistake...And the slower processor is their because it's smaller..?
I mean...seriously. Would you complain that Sony's UMPC sucks because your dell M1710 has a 17" screen? It's a different market.

Quick, call Meredith!
Superevil @ Jun 29th 2007 2:11PM
I'd rather have the Asus EEE
Aaron @ Jun 29th 2007 2:46PM
Come on!? The Asus EEE is in an entirely other (sub) class. Its main competition is the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC): "There will be at least two different models of the Eee PC, with the $199 version using a 4GB flash hard drive and the $299 version using a 8GB drive."
This is business-centric ultra portable not a One Laptop Per Child device. I would say the main competition of this device is the OQO model 2 and the Samsung Q1 Ultra.
k0a10 @ Jun 29th 2007 2:58PM
Damn, I just bought a Q1 Ultra. It's still better suited in some ways for a travel/conversation computer, but this is a full system for half again the weight. Then again, the Q1U has dual webcams, then again, they're awful quality.
Neil @ Jun 29th 2007 4:19PM
I don't get it. Doesn't this machine already exist? It's called the P1610.
http://store.shopfujitsu.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=P1610
I don't see any differences in the specs shown (or linked) here.
Mark @ Jun 29th 2007 5:38PM
Yeah, it's a P1610. I'm typing from one right now. The only difference in mine over this spec'ed model is the SSD. I'm waiting for Samsung to roll out their 64gb SSD that Fujitsu has tagged for this computer (along with Apple, Sony, etc).
I have to say, after using my P1610 for three weeks now, it's now my new all time fave computing device. I've been a long time ultralight notebook user (IBM Thinkpads 600, X20, Fujitsu P1220, P2120, Sony Vaio T250 (for sale btw!)), and this is the latest ultralight I've gotten.
Keyboard's small, but I still touchtype at about 75wpm on it (my max speed is around 95). Screen's good and bad - poor viewing angles, too-bright gloss coating, but when you have the angles right, it looks gorgeous. Resolution is (I can't believe I'm saying this) too high - very squint inducing, but a quick custom setting of the fonts in Display fix most issues. WiFi is solid, speed is okay (not the fastest, but faster than my Vaio VGN-T250) and most importantly for me, small, tight, and light.
I'm hoping the 64gb SSD will help with a) heat issues, b) battery life (already good, but not as good as the transmetta powered P1210/P1220), c) speed. I'd be willing to pay $500, $600, maybe even $700 for the ssd once the price settles a bit to get the extras it offers.

I'm very interested in buying your Sony t250. I loved mine but she developed motherboard problems. I really want another one and was beat out today on ebay for 2 of them. Can we talk?
