HP Compaq's 2710p Tablet PC in the wild and shipping
You won't find a press release for it, but the wait for the 12-inch, HP Compaq 2710p Tablet PC is over. Orders placed with HP today will ship July 25th or August 3rd if you opt for the $199 1xEV-DO (Verizon) Broadband module for full-on wWAN connectivity. In fact, AVING already has pics of the sleek, 3.6-pound, LED backlit convertible mucking about in the wild including this shot of it snuggled up to, and publicly mounting its docking station after a few too many celebratory champagnes.

No touch-pad?!
WTF?
BrianC @ Jul 20th 2007 7:57PM
Great. I hate the TouchPad. I'm glad they replace that with the Track Pointer.
Just hope they would also offer the Vista Ultimate. Look business people also want to enjoy DVDs on the road.

Hi,
It it is LED-based, won't it be kind of pixelate? I mean, how small can a LED be?

Zadillo @ Jul 20th 2007 7:45AM
LED-backlit - it means they use LED's for the actual backlighting. The actual panel is still an LCD panel. They're not using LED's for the actual individual pixels.

Compared to the top specs of a Gateway 14" convertible, how does this compare spec-wise?
Gateway has a graphics card of its own, BTW. Does this one have an option for that too?

I was ready to buy this the other day, but I held off due to the fact that the slim-line battery and CD/DVD optical drive docking station aren't available yet...here is the text from my chat with HP...
info: Welcome to HP's Chat Service.
Please hold for the next available Sales representative.
info: Hello, you are now chatting with Steve.
Steve: To assure I direct you to the right team for your business needs, please tell me the nature of your visit to chat today? (ie: technical support, pre-sales question, purchase, or quote)
Guest: pre-sales questions/quote
Steve: Sure..
Steve: Go right ahead..
Guest: I have some questions about the 2710p...first, is there a way to configure on your website or can I only by the pre-configured versions
Steve: Only pre configured currently..
Steve: Hopefully by August, we will have customize options..
Guest: ok, what about the 2700 expansion bay. I can't find any literature on it and it doesn't seem to show up in your accessories list
Guest: sorry "base" not "bay
Steve: Yes, it does, however, it is not currently available, due to release by end of the month
Steve: HP 2700 Ultra-Slim Expansion Base with 7mm DVD+/-RW SuperMulti Drive
Steve: GD229AA
Steve: That is the part
Guest: Ok, is that the same thing as the HP 2700 Ultra-Slim Battery? or are they 2 different items? If they are different items, can they be used at the same time?
Steve: That is right
Steve: they can be used at same time
Guest: and the battery is also not yet available?
Steve: Correct
Steve: Battery life...
Steve: Primary Battery and Optional HP 2700 Ultra-Slim Battery
Steve: Up to 11 hours and 45 minutes
Guest: Ok, I'm looking under the graphics portion and it states that it is capable of supporting DirectX9...do you know if that is correct of if it has been updated to DirectX10?
Steve: Mobile Intel GMA X3100, up to 384 MB of shared system memory
Steve: Microsoft DirectX9 capable
Steve: Not 10
Steve: That is right, not 10, only 9
Guest: Ok
Steve: Is there any thing else I can do for you to make sure you are completely satisfied with my assistance today?
Guest: Under display it says that there is an "optional outdoor view" but I didn't see that listed under any of the preconfig versions. If I want that feature do I need to wait until the configurable versions come out?
Steve: Only 1 of the models have this feature, not others, yes, when customize option is available, you can choose this with configuraiton you prefer
Guest: Ok, I see it now. Thanks
Steve: You're very welcome. After our chat, a short survey should pop up. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on how I chatted with you today. When you are ready, please click on the "close" button to end our chat and receive the survey. Thank you for visiting HP Chat

The lack of a touchpad is kind of disheartening... I'll stick with my Fujitsu T4220 :)

I've tried the other HP tablets (the consumer line) and the responsiveness for the writing recognition was HORRIBLE. I had to write so slowly it was laughable.
I use my TC1100 for sketching and writing, responsiveness and accuracy of the pen input in a replacement machine are VERY important to me.
