Toshiba Gigabeat MET401 WiFi media device hits the FCC
Not a whole lot to go on here, but it looks like Toshiba has a new Gigabeat media device in the works, one that the FCC seems to have already gotten its hands on. Dubbed the MET401, the device looks to boast built-in WiFi capabilities and, as you can see above, appears to run on Windows Embedded. Unfortunately, those are about the only details we know at the moment, but those curious to see the complete FCC test report can get their fix at the link below.

Hey... look!!! MS has a new device to base the next generation Zune on !
Ok, since the Zune was nothing more than a frankensteined Gigabeat, let's see what this really turns out to be. I gave the Gigabeat a lot of consideration before getting my iPod with video. But then I heard that MS was coming out with the Zune. Once I saw the Zune and all its shortcomings, I went ahead and got the iPod. Let's see if Toshiba learned its lesson and improved on the Gigabeat, which I thought was a very promising player.
I agree, it's too bad they don't make the Gigabeat S anymore. I'd still consider them better than iPods or Zunes. Wow all we can hope is the WiFi is more like SanDisk's and Archos's rather than the limited abilities on the Zune. And that they be some improvements like a bigger more colorful screen.
the look looks pretty like the concept of the touchscreen ipod
That appears to be the back side of the player.
Plus, this fall when the next gen iPod is released, based on the iPhone's interface, it will blow away anything Toshiba or MS can come up with.
I Too would like to be an apple fanboy so i can go ahead and start making assumptions too! :D
Finally a new gigabeat. I always thought the last one (before the Zune) was a better option than an iPod anytime. Let's see what this turns out to be, and hope the Wi-Fi in this one is as functional as the one in the Sansa Connect and not as useless as in the Zune.
Interesting - I wonder if it'd work in the CLIE NX series (I'm still holding on to). The one Sony came out with years ago is only 802.11b.
As a Gigabeat S owner, I'm hoping some of this trickles down to me (and the rest of the forgotten S-series owners).
Me too.
Sbeat is the first play I thought worth purchasing (other than flying to Korea!). And it rocks - but as soon as the damn zune came out toshiba abandoned their child.
I had no idea as I bought it first in Japan.
And theres not enough users to power a hacking community for it either.
stupid auto-fill.....
hope not.. 4GB is useless for specialized personal media player these days. My phone has 8GB flash!
I love my gigabeat S and don't give a shit if anybody else even knows what it is. I don't need wifi or a store to by DRM'd shit from. Its so easy to use, I couldn't imagine using a different MP3/Video player.
I would never buy another Toshiba MP3 product ever after owning the S30. Although it was a fabulous product that had many advantages over the ipod, it has to be one of the WORST SUPPORTED MP3 PLAYERS, EVER!! Toshiba never bothered to fix the infamous battery problem and never even attempted to come out with a single firmware upgrade. Plus, their tech support drones have to be the worst in the industry. It also had the worst accessory lineup.
Yes, this new Gigabeat could be all bells and whistles but until Toshiba understands that you also have to support the product once it's in consumers hands, stay away at all costs!
