TiVo HD launches

Ah, right on time the
TiVo HD launches, and with all the expected features and highlights. Users can expect:
- HDMI / component out up to 1080i
- Dual frontal CableCARD slots (plus M-Card compatibility! slots are behind the gray plastic bar), single ATSC tuner, analog NTSC, etc. (Same deal as Series3 though, only two tuners can record at the same time.)
- No frontal display, Glo remote, or THX cert, still no support for multi-room viewing, TiVoToGo, and TiVoToComeBack
- $300 price tag

no tivo to go? @ Jul 24th 2007 12:24AM
until TivoToGo comes to HD this offers nothing that my cable DVR does except a nicer interface and a higher monthly fee. amazon unbox might be nice to play with but I just want TivoToGo damnit!

Read Engadget HD! TTG is coming for all HD & SD stuff that doesn't have a copy-protection flag. So anything broadcast OTA should be transferable.

Are you on crack? The motorola comcast DVR has been the bane of my existance for the last 2 years with audio dropouts, freezes crashes and a scheduler that doesnt allow you to pick particular times for a program! Not to mention the monthly fee they charge me.
fischju @ Jul 24th 2007 1:31AM
No THX certification? Does that mean I can't hear the awesome THX sound at the beginning of movies!?!?!? HOW DARE THEY! That's how I made my neighbours realize that I was better than them!

It is a nice box - as with the Series3, I had the TiVo HD to review. There is some very interesting stuff on the inside of the box: http://www.tivolovers.com/2007/07/24/tivo-hd-aka-series3-lite-announced-and-reviewed/
DaveTehWave @ Jul 24th 2007 4:00AM
Dave,
Thanks for the review... spot on as usual.
Have you tried the 'unofficial' external storage?
MegaZone @ Jul 24th 2007 4:07AM
I haven't tried the Kickstart 62 on the TiVo HD. I don't have an eSATA drive to try it with, unfortunately. I thought about buying one, but I just dropped $500 on a PS3 last week so I don't have a lot of disposable cash right now. :-)

This is great news for a lot of my friends who have been holding out.
TiVo HD (or S3), FiOS and adding Slingox = Digital Nirvanna!
daniel @ Jul 24th 2007 8:16AM
I'd get a refurbish series 3 for $500 with a free wireless tivo g usb adapter.
I know there is a $200 price difference, but you do get the free wireless card about $50, and it is refurb, but it comes with the same warranty as tivo gives to the new boxes I think.
Its very handy the front display - don't having to open the tv to see whats recording. I bought my wife one and its great.

Wasn't the Series3 also called "TiVo HD"?
andy @ Jul 24th 2007 10:50AM
no.
Grammar freak @ Jul 24th 2007 9:27AM
bla bla bla lifetime subscriptions bla bla bla.
andy @ Jul 24th 2007 10:52AM
I don't understand the tuner comments, but I can record two HD programs off of the air at the same time with my S3. So can this thing do that?
rob @ Jul 24th 2007 4:48PM
This is a deal-breaker for me as I don't have cable where I live... it's OTA or satellite (or nothing). So I have the same question, can I record two HD shows OTA at the same time with this thing??
If not, does the regular series 3 do this?
andy @ Jul 25th 2007 9:15AM
Yes, the series 3 records TWO HD programs simultaneously. (or one HD and one SD, or two SD)
Chew Chew Chew ME @ Jul 24th 2007 11:27AM
WTF happened to the NETFLIX website???
Jestyr @ Jul 24th 2007 11:30AM
You can record 2 basic cable channels, or one basic cable and one digital cable channel, at once.
jb @ Jul 24th 2007 11:57AM
Just to clarify the TIVO HD can't record 2 HD shows at the same time?
Mark "Stingray2019" Santora @ Jul 24th 2007 12:42PM
This is true? Only 1 HD and 1 SD channel at a time? My Moxi box has been doing better than this for 18 months! 2 HD channels and watch a 3rd off the HD...
Granted, the interface still isn't great, but it's gotten better. And you still can't say "record Saturday from 5-7:15pm"
Smiles @ Aug 1st 2007 4:08AM
Totally false. You can record 2 HD programs and even watch a third (recorded) HD program at the same time. Maybe you're thinking of the Series2 DT.
MegaZone @ Jul 25th 2007 2:30AM
Uh, no - any two channels at a given time. Two SD, two SD, two analog, two digital, one analog and one digital, one SD and one HD, one antenna and one cable, both antenna, both cable - whatever.
jb @ Jul 24th 2007 12:01PM
I am currently experiencing problems with my cable reception with COX. The customer service rep says I am probably not getting the bandwidth I need to support my HD DVR. COX takes full responsibility and is sending out someone to fix it.
What happens when I have a TIVO box? Does COX wash their hands of it & blame all my problems on TIVO? Do we play the blame game till I give up & go "dish".
Fruition @ Jul 24th 2007 4:34PM
I don't follow TiVo's products too closely, but I've had an HD DVR from iO since around January. Is this implying that there was no HD TiVo reciever before now?
MegaZone @ Jul 25th 2007 2:32AM
No, the TiVo Series3 came out last fall and was their first HD DVR that worked with cable and antenna. Well before that the DirecTiVo HR10-250 recorded HD content from DirecTV and antenna.
Dale @ Aug 20th 2007 6:53AM
What's going on with TiVo and DirecTv these days? I have both a TiVo HD DVR and a DirecTv HD DVR. I hate the DirecTv interface (and I've given it enough time to know it's not just a matter of 'getting used to it'). The TiVo interface is great (not perfect but a heck of a lot more intuitive that DirecTv's). I also have a Sony 3000 box with a lifetime subscription and it's beginning to show signs of impending failure. Any good ideas on what I can do with it? Thanks for any help.
