Apple's iPhone: yes, it plays Doom
Considering that Doom runs smooth as butter on Nokia's 770, the OLPC XO, and the iPod, you knew it was only a matter of time before this classic made its way over to the iPhone. Just in time for the weekend, Doom is now available for Apple's first handset. And just in case blasting through pixelated fiends wears you out, why not check out the new and improved NES emulator? We won't waste anymore of your precious iPhone gaming time here, now get your downloads on below!
Update: So you can't exactly -- what's the word we're looking for -- "play" Doom quite yet, it seems the controller ain't working. It's a promising sign, though!

It works!!!! HAH!
I love the a-typical ATT signal though. 1-bar. Keeping the world connected - a'ight.
Is that how much battery you'll have left after launching it and watching it consume cycles too?
Any word on whether this is hardware accelerated?
WIFI bar... signal bar is full... wow...
Umm ... the AT&T service is at 5 bars. WiFi is 1 bar.
But that's alright.
Ok, fine. wifi.. but damnit.. why are ATT people that far away from wifi anyways? :)
Umm ... the cable comes into my house on the north side. My room is on the south side of my house.
Are you just trolling or are you really wondering what reason someone would have for having 33% signal strength?
Unless those bars are infinitely subdivided 1 bar doesn't mean 33% signal strength, it means AT MOST 33% signal strength. Your actual strength might be 2% and it'd still show 1 bar.
yes but does it run linux?
Who freaking cares? It already runs unix.
Leopard is unix, but is the iPhone's version of OS X unix?
pretty sure that's the wifi signal strength. ATT oddly enough has max bars in that pic.
But will it play...no wait....ummmmm...But will it blend...no wait...damn.
I got nothin'
BUT WILL IT PLAY QUAKE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
"yes but does it run linux?"
its like my best friend says, "you can run linux on a fucking toaster"
Multi-touch weapons, anyone? It'd be cool to guide missiles by touching too, but that would make it too easy.

Yes, the iPhone - king of unfulfilled promise.
Just out of curiosity, what exactly did Apple promise about the iPhone that it doesn't do? Other than trivial stuff like the fish background and the ringtone in the ads ... I can't think of anything.
I didn't say they promised anything, I said it exemplifies unfullfilled promise. Like being able to run third party software on a portable OSX or any of the other obvious flaws that so many people have pointed out and would have been so easy for Apple to "allow".
Don't get all fanboy on me, you know I'm right. The iPhone could have been the Jesus phone, but it's a hack of a device that falls far shorter than it gets credit for.
They never said they were going to allow 3rd party apps though.
I see your point, it's easy to put 3rd party apps on (I have Doom, iPhone NES, and MobileTerminal) but you make it seem like Apple said it was going to have all these great features and then didn't put them on the phone.
It does everything they said it could.
apple never said it would allow them true, but they let the fanboys assume it through the miracle of saying that the os is os x and then saying _nothing_ about apps in the next 5 months. many people assumed that it would have the basic things modern phones have like j2me and mms too, but no, and frankly jobs excuses in that one interview for disallowing 3rd party apps were quite lame(lacking memory protection in the os or wtf?) considering how amazingly simply it has been hacked.
and to nerdboy, accelerated? of course not. it's the plain old doom engine not some 3d version of it.
even 7650 had doom
Huh? 'till now? I'm surprised it took that long until someone placed the beloved doom cliché into the iPhone. I though it was the first thing they'd put in there...
How do you install these apps???
1. Jailbreak
2. Enable SSH
3. Copy Doom.app to /Applications
4. chmod +x /Applications/Doom.app/Doom
5. Restart the phone and the icon will be there
eh iPhoneLinux doesn't have the same 'ring' as iPodLinux
God, you people are raping the joke. Its supposed to be Doom 3, not Doom.
No it's not, you failure.
But will it play Wii Sports?
doom is all well and good, but does it play checks quest?
The game even as such important HUD information as: time, cellular and WIFI signal strength.
When do we get iPhone Oregon Trail?
Well lets see how well they can make the controls.
We already know that without tactile feedback making virtual buttons is a no-no,
But from what I've played on the DS version of Doom, moving with the touch screen is a chore.
how nice that all apple stuff plays doom, including ipods :)
