White PlayStation 2 appears in upcoming holiday SingStar bundle
It always feels good to do a bit of catch up with Japan, even if we are a couple years behind the times. This time we're getting in on the "so 2005" ceramic white slim PS2 fad, but lucky for us in North America, Sony's tossing in an attractive SingStar bundle all for a perfectly reasonable $150. Included in the box is SingStar Pop, two mics, and of course the white PlayStation 2 and matching DualShock. You can score the bundle this November.

Well it's only almost a decade left. Why do they always release colorful stuff to the Japanese first?
ChrisG @ Aug 29th 2007 8:08PM
when is Sony going to kill off the PS2. I just think the PS3 would probably sell better if they stopped manufacturing the PS2. Also it isn't much of a deal when you can get a gamecube or last gen xbox for 50 bucks lol.
Mr President @ Aug 29th 2007 9:39PM
Why would they kill the best selling console of. It still outsells the PS3 and its simple to hack..
ChrisG @ Aug 29th 2007 11:27PM
All im saying is that how can Sony make a profit on the ps3 when there still selling the ps2. Because of that there losing out on getting casual gamers to buy the ps3 and make current ps2 owners feel like theres no real need to buy a ps3. That one reason why more gamers are buying xbox 360s because the original isn't manufactured any more so consumers buy the current gen sku's. If Sony killed off the PS2, PS3 sales would heavily increase compared to the current amount of sales. Plus for all you people that are saying the PS2 will last as long as the PS3, I seriously think that once Sony can't find another price cut or 8 free blu-ray discs strategy for the PS3, then they'll stop production on the PS2.
JDizzle @ Aug 29th 2007 11:39PM
I just don't see why PS3 sales would rise if the PS2 was discontinued. It's not hardcore gamers who are buying the PS2, they probably already have a PS3. It's grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even moms and dads, who are buying these PS2s as gifts because they are cheap and can still give you a lot of enjoyment on the huge collection of PS2 titles. I think Sony would lose money trying to only sell the PS3 because friends and relatives aren't going to dish out $500 or $600 on a system which they look at as practically the same as the $400 cheaper PS2. If the PS2 were unavailable they would just go to the next cheapest alternative which I believe would be the Wii.
Mr President @ Aug 31st 2007 5:53PM
If you have 2 Sony options and 80% of the population prefers PS2, eliminating it would only decrease profits. Besides, the profit percentage per PS2 sold is greater than that of the PS3.
Chris, the 360 sells good because its backed by many decent games, XBL and its multimedia capabilities.
BTW the original Xbox can still be purchased new for $149 (if your HDD goes out, its done - so another reason more have migrated to a 360 - features!!)
K_G @ Aug 30th 2007 2:13AM
I don't suppose you realize that it is the profits from the PS2 hardware and software that allows Sony to lose the scads of cash it currently does on the PS3...and given that the PS3 is 5x more (those $500 models are getting pretty scarce in stores nowadays...so get used to $600 80 gig model) expensive than the PS3, elminating it won't force anyone to buy a PS3...they are in completely different market setments...this is like saying getting rid of Chevy will make GM sell more Caddys...in reality, it would just mean far less people buying GM cars overall. People are buying 360s because there are games they want to play on them....there's no shortage of used xboxes floating out there on ebay or at EB/gamestop, so if people just wanted to buy a machine to just play xbox1 games, they would not have much difficutly in getting one and these used machines are considerably cheaper than a 360.
Manuel @ Aug 30th 2007 9:55AM
it´s the games, stupid
James @ Aug 30th 2007 11:17AM
Wow, it's like explaining tax cuts to a Democrat (cut taxes, revenue goes up -- works every time it's tried). If they got rid of the PS2, a few people who were going to buy one might buy a PS3 instead, but you have to remember that the PS3 is about 5 times as expensive, and cost is almost always one of the top factors when making a purchase decision. Instead of a PS3, spurned PS2 hopefuls might buy:
* A used PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube
* A new Wii
* A new 360
...all of which are (much) cheaper than a PS3. Sony is smart enough to continue providing a product that competes with the rest of the market -- there's still great PS2 games coming out, albeit at a slower pace than was the case this time last year. And you can still get a PS2 *and* a Wii for close to the price of a 360, or a Wii and a 360 for close to the price of a PS3. It would be suicidal for Sony to axe the PS2 at this point.
madcrabs @ Aug 29th 2007 8:19PM
Interesting. I've been meaning to replace my PS2 so I can get my Guitar Hero fix. My understanding is that the PS2 will drop to $99 toward the holiday season. Maybe I'll wait.
blacklistxhunter @ Aug 29th 2007 8:20PM
looks like the sony just can't get rid of PS2
looks at color scheme... can someone say wii? lol
Paulmichael @ Aug 29th 2007 8:45PM
Not really, the white PS2 has been out since '05...
ark_v2 @ Aug 29th 2007 8:45PM
The ps2 still beats the wii to the ground if you ask me.
korockid @ Aug 29th 2007 9:36PM
are you stupid? what came first? the wii or this white ps2?
idiot fanboys need to keep their mouths shut.
humpty @ Aug 29th 2007 9:39PM
After 7+ years of cost reductions, PStwo is pure profit for Sony... does anyone here expect Wii to be pushing 200-300k units a month in 7 years?
dsg @ Aug 29th 2007 10:07PM
There was also a white PS1.
Grey Acumen @ Aug 29th 2007 8:47PM
Hmm... Honestly, I think it might just be the matte finish, but I seriously don't like how the PS2 looks when it's white. The silver one I really like, but this. It looks... like its frosted, and if I get it wet, it'll melt.
Kurtis @ Aug 29th 2007 11:06PM
if you get it wet, it might as well melt...
Ayan @ Aug 29th 2007 8:59PM
the Wii is still a lot better than the PS2 in terms of interaction. wait until theres a comparable amount of games for the Wii and then there will be no competition. Also, Sony cant clean PS2 from the market until the demand for new games reduces. Until the people replace their PS2s with PS3s, we will see no change from Sony regarding the most successful gaming machine ever created. The demand dictates the supply.
Revrant2394 @ Aug 30th 2007 6:36AM
That's what actually rubs me the wrong way, the PS2 is such an immense console, sales wise anyway, that publishers(I daresay not developers) insist on having a game released for it WITH the next-gen consoles, degrading their graphics and what they're capable of, and burning money and time trying to minimize that huge quality difference ala Smackdown and Madden.
SimbaDogg @ Aug 29th 2007 9:00PM
@ChrisG
why on earth would they ever want to kill the best selling console in history. Its sold double what any other console has ever done (except for the original NES console, but it'll be double within about a year or two). You can't really compare the people who buy ps2 @ 129 w/ the people that buy ps3 @ 500. Just like the Wii is a casual gamer system, the ps2 is that and then some. more titles, better games, and with some of the motion sensing titles coming out soon...its basically everything that the wii is and then some. Except no mario party games =(
Vizion @ Aug 29th 2007 9:44PM
Man imagine if PS3 sells as much as the PS2 does 10 years down the line? I don't see it happening, but anyone who thins the PS3 is dead needs to realize Sony's long term strategy compared to their competition.
While people say the PS3 had a slow start, I say the Wii had an enormously fast one. Can they keep that up 6-10 years down the line? I personally see it slowing down.
KaineZq @ Aug 29th 2007 10:41PM

Why? Why must they give the white console black cables and black microphones? I'm not usually one to be picky on the controllers having to match the system (I've had many blue and red Playstation controllers in the day), but black on white is just too much contrast. Black on silver itself is too much contrast.
Nfinity @ Aug 29th 2007 11:56PM
Well when you have 1 console fail, stick to the old one to get you some money back.
For anyone to think that PS3 can come even close to PS2 in sales needs their head examined. First of all when PS3 launched they had almost no competition. Then XBox came in too late in the game without games and even though they really tried they couldn't overtake XBox. It's exactly the same situation now but vice-versa. XBox 360 owns PS3 in every possible way and will probably end up being sold in HUGE numbers in the next couple of years, Wii even better, yet PS3 will stay where it is because a lot of people have already made their decisions and friends of friends want to play on Xbox Live and not PS3s pathetic PSN.
Eriq @ Aug 30th 2007 1:20AM
Why?
superaktieboy @ Aug 30th 2007 2:37PM
lol they should be trying to sell the PS3 not the PS2
trendecide @ Aug 30th 2007 6:41PM
hmmm... am I the only one that sees the PlayStation Wii out of this?
roneewong @ Aug 30th 2007 6:44PM
the fact that Sony is still promoting the PS2 says a lot about the state of the PS3
Trace The Hedgehog @ Aug 31st 2007 5:13PM
I'd buy this for the color. =3
Brian @ Sep 1st 2007 2:06PM
Here's what the NEXT generation systems are going to be called
Nintendo VR
Xbox 666
PlayStation 2.5
Sony really needs to ween people off the PS2 if they ever want to be taken seriously again about gaming.
