Believe it or not, I use the Pentium D edition at school for word processing, while 3D classes are restricted to P4HT workstations.
I love these boxes!
Simple, stately looks and damn-near true silence.
I used one at work this summer.
Add in a real videocard for around 300, and you have a fairly decent system for around 1200.
Anyone know how us regular folk (not business people) can get these systems other than eBay or something similar?
You can get them from the Dell website:

Yeah, go to Dell.com and buy one from the small business sight. Anyone can order from them...
When you go to the DELL website, choose either of the business cycles instead of home/home office. You can make your choice of Optiplex platforms by checking all of them or typing Optiplex in the search option. I have bought a few Optiplexsystem through the Small Business and have pleased---never once have I received a lemon.
Oops... "Small Business Site"...Homanym day...
what about 745???
I use a Dell Precision 470 for my graphic design job at the local paper. But we have many, many, many Optiplex's of varying age
I
I love me some Optiplex.
I recently picked up an older model from eBay for tinkering with and it's great. Almost silent and quite reliable.
I wonder if this model comes with faulty capacitors on the motherboard like the GX280's GX520 did? 30+ and counting have failed out of less than 200. But to be fair to Dell they did admit there was a problem with that batch and sent us 5 refurbished motherboards to keep on hand for quick replacements.
Man, I hated having to replace all those damn motherboards as well.
We have dozens and dozens of these new Optiplexes (from varying model lines) and I do love the case design, easy to add/remove drives, and most importantly dead silent.
Can't believe it took them this long to go Gigabit. They lost a recent sale because I wanted it.
Schools everywhere say hurrah!
Consumers everywhere are confused.
They're good computers, sure beats the "Tangent" computers with CRT monitors in the other computer lab in school... but at least those beats the fact I had to use Mac through elementary school.
Yeah, I have had a large number of the GX280 motherboards pop caps on me. The 620's and 745's have been wonderous. I guess it's cause the 280's are on 24/7 and get latte spilled on them every week.
I actually preferred the x600 cards in 620's to the integrated ones in the 745... minus the DVI converter, it's a superior configuration...
